I installed countertops (laminate, quartz, natural stone, glass, Corian, etc) for 5 years. We tore out old tops on probably 30% of all installs we did. When removing, we always cut out the front and back piece on cooktops and sink holes completely (like left and right of the holes, front and back). That allowed us to be able to shimmy much smaller pieces of countertop off of the cabinets and out of the house.

    • @GoinDownTheRoadFeelinBad

I presently install countertops for home depot. For bigger tops just cut at the dishwasher with a jigsaw if possible. It contains all the saw dust on top of the dishwasher. Sink or cooktop is my 2nd choice. Also you have to put your level at the 90 between the cabinets to make sure both plans are at the same level.

You should always set up a laser when installing cabinets or checking them for that matter. The laser gives you one point of reference, using a level is harder and one cabinet to another could change just because of a racked cabinet, they are so easy to tweak and you need more than one level to get the job done, usually a big stick on your long front and back and a 24" for front to back. It is so much quicker and more accurate to use a self-leveling laser, the right tools for the right job lol.
Sorry being a pro trim carpenter and many years of remodeling work as well as new construction you learn a few things lol. What's the use of knowledge if you don't pass it on

@@jax3032 The laser level was invented in the 1960s by Oscar Soliz who sold the rights and has been manufactured and developed into the lasers we use today. Also to add, yes fixing the flatness on those sags will help but regardless the installers are going to have to shim. Since theyll be joining together at least 3 piece of stone and putting a full height backsplash on top of it, that means all 3 piece have to be coplanar so shimming is going to happen regardless and therefore there's inevitably going to be some visible shim placement if you bend down to look.

And the white quartz countertop really brighten the space and made it look way better. I also changed hardware for a more modern style and it really helped and only cost like 200$ to do.
On another note, here where i live in canada, its really common to refinish/repaint the cabinets. It gives it a 2nd life. You could probably have them painted light grey or event do a contrast with a darker grey on the island and the pantry cabinet/wall oven cabinets. Its way cheaper (here like 3500$ CAD to have someone professionally refinish them way cheaper than spending 20k on new cabinets.

I’ve been slowly swapping out my halogen lights for LED lights, they’re a lot cooler. I too have a large bay window in front of the sink but it’s a pain to reach into so I have plans to replace mine when I get the time. Too bad that island countertop was busted up since it could’ve been used by someone somewhere. I’ve cut down many stone or solid surface countertops using just an abrasive masonry blade on a circular saw. I’ve even repurposed concrete sidewalk slabs using the same method, using a fan to blow the dust away and side doweled rebar for alignment…much like biscuits. I’ve never understood why anyone would pay such high prices for kitchen cabinets when they’re so easy to make. My dad was a cabinetmaker back in the 60’s & 70’s, making custom stuff for the rich in Palm Springs CA while living in Henderson NV (near Las Vegas) but I can assure you anyone can build cabinets, even me…an ironworker.

They would have loved the kitchen island counter you smashed. I know t was very heavy but I think Jamie would have found way to get it done. Keep up the good videos and we feel bad about how long you have to wait for product.

I loved watching you Knuckleheads' try to unscrew the disposer mount. Anyone can do this with a little planning. The countertop people do all the real work . You guys just did the demo and leveled the cabinets. You didn't even know that the DW was fastened to the top. Rookies

My Fathers and Grandparents bought a duplex built in 1998/1999. In the main bathroom there was the same kind of vent, just a hole in the floor beneath the cabinet and a vent on the kick plate. I always thought that was a half-ass maneuver. Made those cabinets either really cold or really hot!

Fascinating to watch this. I know everyone has different starting points, intermediate challenges, and final objectives. So please take my remarks with the solidarity of the DIY brotherhood :-) First...in the planning stage I would have identified that the island worktop was an asset to be retained and sold to help fund the project - or even donated to a deserving channel subscriber with the idea of filming their upcycle project using it. It looks gorgeous and I can imagine somebody loving the idea of building a new island carcass underneath it. It's obvious that it weighs a ton, so plan ahead for its safe removal. Or just ask your worktop supplier for advice. They deal with heavy objects on a daily basis. Second...why would you install beautiful and expensive quartz worktops on cabinets that look old and unfashionable? I know new cabinets are expensive too but I would have taken the opportunity to try to upcycle the existing cabinets as part of the project. Somebody else mentioned the soft close doors and drawers. That is the baseline expectation for a high end kitchen these days. But a simple paint job and new handles would transform it. Having said all of that (with much love :-) ) I think your title for this video is perfect. The value of lessons learned and watching other folks execute major projects like this is amazing. Thank you.

Haha, I commented on the shingles not being used here in Europe in the roofing video as well. What we also don't have here is a garbage disposal in the sink (or at all). For everything bio-degradable we have an own trash can like for paper, plastic, and for the 'rest'.

on the bay window, just sand down the wavyness and refill any voids you reveal with filler, then put down a new layer of veneer.

Hello fellas! I LOVE your videos! My husband and I want to build a summer home in the mountains of NC. and I have been trying to educate myself on the process. Where are you exactly? I am excited to have found you. The thing I admire most about you guys is your exacting work ethic...you do things right. I am not saying you are perfect builders and never make mistakes...but it seems to me, that you do everything you do as if you were doing it for your own mom!

It was a shame to break up the stone top of the island. Being a scavenger, I would have tried scoring the top before breaking it in half. Once I had smaller pieces, they would have been repurposed as smaller out-door table tops or as hard flat surfaces as was shown with the sink cut-out from the new quartz top.

I own a granite countertop company. The best way to check level or set cabinets is with a 360 laser level. Find the highest cabinet and work off of it . Split the laser line on the front edge of the cabinet and just hit the backside of it . They will be perfect all the way around since you had 2 seams . On white quartz on the seams standard razor blades will leave the seam looking a little grey sometimes. They make white ceramic razor blades now . Just for white quartz and seam glue .

Under the window, you may want to install a thin sheet of stainless steel. Could be as thin as a 1/16. Water proof stain resistant. If that is too expensive, or if you want color, try a powder coated piece. Probably cheaper to go powder coated anyway. BTW, REALLY ENJOY THE VIDEOS. If your crew would like to go on the road in May of 2023 and do a video in Portland, Oregon, let me know. We are building a beautiful house here.

Always had granite. Built a new house 2 years ago and went with the same quartz you have. Still have granite in the bathrooms and laundry. Quartz hands down is so much nicer. You could have a cabinet guy come in build new drawers with Blum hardware. It would be almost like getting new cabinets.

Re Jamie's comment about shingles, in Australia we never use shingles, we use concrete or terracotta tiles or more popularly metal sheeting like galvanized corrugated sheet or coloured steel sheet ( colour bond)

Reference the casement window cranks... Jamie's got metal working tools, have him make custom cranks; with either a longer base to retain the original mechanical advantage of the cranks, or a shorter shaft so they clear the sill surface, or a combination of both. Look at the fun he could have, machining them from billet aluminum, and then anodize them black.
