Happily, many songs like this have stood the test of time. Some older songs are often played at weddings, such as 'At Last' (1941) and 'The Way You Look Tonight' (1938). As for me - I love 'em all!
She could sing well. Her off key voice in I Love Lucy was just silly clowning. On various occasions you can hear her singing well, including in her early career before she adopted that "I can't sing" persona. What she meant by her lack of singing is that she was not a great singer like Debbie Reynolds or Judy Garland. Lucy could sing "ok," but she couldn't compete with a person who was actually good. So she decided it was better to do what she excelled at and avoid something at which she was comparatively weak. Still, she could probably sing much better than most any normal person. Carol Burnett was also a weak singer but she just owned it and liked to sing on her show anyway.
I LOVE watching Lucy dance…reminds me that she was so very talented! And the silly response to VJ in the song are wonderful…coy and clever…fantastic💕!!
😃 I *LOVE* this episode! It is my favorite. Van Johnson was wonderful in it, and 'how about' Lucy?! 😺 She finally gets a chance to show that she *can* be a part of the show, and Ricky is just grinning and enjoying it. Charmingly played by all... I mean, I know there are other shows that stand out (Vitameatavegamin, the chocolate factory, grape stomping, or perhaps the one in the remote cabin with the 'traveling beds' - I think that one is in the movie), ah you all know if you ask one hundred of us our favorite show or scene, you'd get a couple of recurring titles, but on the whole you'd find about seventy five different titles. 😸
This is one of my favorite episodes for all the reasons you mentioned. :-) It's not shown in the clip here, but after her big number when she runs backstage and she's so exhilarated that she's practically jumping is also a fine example of her acting. It's absolutely believable that she did something totally brave and is still feeling the rush, and Lucy made it feel natural. Just a wonderful scene.
Well dont forget the martian episode where her and viv were martians that was funny and also she sang a brazilian song were the vinyl f**ked up she has to lip sync and dance so fast and the ballet scene.
... definitely a classy move by Van Johnson at the end of the dance number, taking Lucy to the table where Ricky and the Mertzes were sitting... ...a very cool acknowledgement of Ricky and Lucy as a couple...
ILL , i consider the Desi Arnaz Orch. as the fifth star of the series . These versatile musicians set a standard , especially in the early years that made this series a runaway hit . I read how cleaver Arnaz was to have them appear as part of the program .
I love this. I wonder if that gorgeous dress was pale pink or pale blue. I don’t think it was white because when she’s next to Van Johnson’s white shirt it’s darker by comparison. Everything about this show was magical. A simpler and better time in the world.
Musical acts like this one were some of the best parts of "I Love Lucy." It's unfortunate that they were not as frequent in the later episodes of the series.
Thank you so much for posting! I'm watching Lucy on Hulu only to find out one of my favorite episodes and absolute favorite dance routine isn't on there!!! Had to come find this on CZcams. God bless you
Van Johnson was in the 1940 film Too Many Girls - met Desi and Lucy at that time; also he appeared on I Love Lucy and on The Lucy show; finally he was in the 1968 film Yours Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
@NESSIA777 The song is " How About You ? " from the musical " Babes On Broadway " sung by Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland . Lyrics by Ralph Freed - Music by Burton Lane ..
my all-time favorite song and dance man...not lucy, the other guy. of course, van johnson isn't best known as a song and dance man but it's my favorite stuff to watch him do. lucy was genuinely funny in this skit.
Van Johnson was such an underrated talent in his lifetime, he could do comedy, drama, romance and musicals (ntm they didn’t have to dub his singing like many of his fellow MGM dancers in that era).
Van Johnson was deserted by his mother when he was 2 years old. He was raised by his father and grandmother. When he became a name he got a letter from a lawyer representing his mother in regard to supporting her. Something was worked out, not the money she wanted, but still why was she entitled to anything? Van said he didn't object to the support but the way in which it was done.
This is what makes me being olde worth it. I grew up when talent, hard work, love, decency, taste, class and even.dreams all reigned. Today kids grow up lazy. It's all about cash, trash and ass/porno. Sad, sad, sad
2:10 - A rare on-screen appearance of Wilbur Hatch - conducting the "Desi Arnaz Orchestra". Of course, you only see 'some' of the band on-stage. Where's the drummer? :-)
Company officials say the company became a battery operated vehicle with his family owned vehicles that you can do to keep your insurance company could have the same amount you have the opportunity that is being jealously judged and have the opportunity for you to take advantage.
They made a lovey couple. Thier dancing g was magical and they were very classical. I loved this one as well the episode in the plane with the cheese. Miss the old days..wish we could bring them back..whe people were kind to ea h other.
A star in all ways. The mold was broken when Lucy passed away, there will never be another like her. I was so proud when, after dying my hair from light brown to red, l went to work and everyone said l. looked alot like Lucy. All day, my coworkers kept saying, "Hey Lucy, where's Desi?" 😊
The original Dancing with the Stars. This episode makes me smile.
I love this song & those 2 together singing $ dancing ! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Van Johnson is so dreamy 😍
Sad to think that songs with this kind of sweetness and sentiment are gone from American culture.
But they are part of their history! lovely and rich music history. Before their time they did not exist either
Never gone. Look & you can find them.....may be from year's past but they're still there.
Try "Photograph" by Cody Fry. It's one of my favorite songs of all time and it's one of the sweetest songs I've ever heard.
Happily, many songs like this have stood the test of time. Some older songs are often played at weddings, such as 'At Last' (1941) and 'The Way You Look Tonight' (1938). As for me - I love 'em all!
Sweet songs still exist today, they're just not as popular
Lucy always said that she couldn't dance or sing, but as an actor she acted like she could. This scene shows she that she is a great actor!
She could dance tho she wasn’t stiff or had 2 left feet

Love the episodes where Lucy gets to show off her true set of skills…singing, dancing, really acting!!
What an incredible talent Lucille Ball was! She was an excellent and funny actress and was a very good dancer as well.
What a great clip! Loved seeing them dance & the big smile on Ricky’s face!
I LOVE watching Lucy dance…reminds me that she was so very talented! And the silly response to VJ in the song are wonderful…coy and clever…fantastic💕!!
If you watch I love Lucy all the time then you think she looks okay but then you look back and she is gorgeous
i watch it all the time and i'm never over how gorgeous she was
She was an absolute siren when she did "Cuban Pete."
This is just great comedy, timing singing, dancing, all rolled into one.
Brilliant!
I loved when Lucy went to Hollywood from the long drive there to meeting all the stars. Then her trip to Europe was great too.
What a gorgeous woman Lucy was ❤️

I love when she puts on the dress so pretty n does the number! Sensational!
Pure class.

good observation. i always wonder what colour her clothes were. they were very lovely, anyway.
I would guess a pale pink or coral, to go with her red hair. They both look so smart and elegant.
They play How About You in the restaurant I work in all the time. I can't help but say the in between things, it's too much fun.
sounds like a classy restaurant you work at (or used to)
This was one of my favorite episodes. Lucille was really talented.
One of my absolute faves. Lucy and are so elegant!
So graceful and beautiful. Lucy and Van!
For those 7 DISLIKERS, get a LIFE!!! Wonderful episode. Gives me goosebumps.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES!❤️❤️❤️❤️
WOW
Wonderful clip of two genuine superstars!
From a 71yo Aussie fan.

The Egg Tango comes to mind
This was so elegant and classy. Lucy looked like she was dancing on air
Love this program and these artists. Writers, actors, muscians.😊
I love this older but goodie Winans Song.
Thank you so much for posting! I'm watching Lucy on Hulu only to find out one of my favorite episodes and absolute favorite dance routine isn't on there!!! Had to come find this on CZcams. God bless you
Lucille here could really dance so well. She was indeed a talented artist!
Van Johnson was very close to Ricky and Lucy and stayed life long friends with them until their deaths..
Van Johnson was in the 1940 film Too Many Girls - met Desi and Lucy at that time; also he appeared on I Love Lucy and on The Lucy show; finally he was in the 1968 film Yours Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
Lucy looks amazing here
I love. It so classy both of them

I
been looking for this for a while, this is my favourite episode :)
My moms favorite actor, by far.
my all-time favorite song and dance man...not lucy, the other guy. of course, van johnson isn't best known as a song and dance man but it's my favorite stuff to watch him do. lucy was genuinely funny in this skit.
Van Johnson was known for his singing & dancing - in Hollywood in the 1940's.

I know that I'll always laugh at any one of her shows!

simpler times

the '50s were so elegant and magical, people are now much more ordinary, gross
Lucille Ball learned to dance from Ginger Rogers’ mother.
Does anybody know the name of the tune Marco Rizo plays at 4:04 ?
Her dress is very much like the one Ginger Rogers wore in "Top Hat."
She even dances in character. There’s something just slightly goofy even though she’s beautiful.
I wonder if Desi got yealous
No way in hell. Van was gay, lol.
Desi got very jealous when Lucy played with Henry Fonda in The Big Street. He became disruptive on the set and was finally banned from showing up.
What song is this?
"How About You?"
does anyone know the name of the song they sing?
"How About You?"

Yikes
Was Van Johnson born in Boston Mass
No, Rhode Island.
