Gene was adamant about not dancing in this film. The producers hounded him until he relented. But he had certain demands. It would be a closed set. And the entire dance sequence be from beginning to end. Not taped, edited, and spliced. So that entire dance scene is one single dance. Can you imagine the pressure on Olivia? Her talents never cease to amaze me. Her dancing was flawless and appeared effortless. What an absolute Angel here on earth.
@@ginagray603 And Olivia Newton John was dancing with a broken tail bone. In an interview he gave in 2013, he said he considered himself basically retired but did it because he'd heard ONJ wanted so badly to dance with him. Nothing about refusal or infirmity. And you can't dance like that when you're ill.
@@andygrilz8497 False story. He basically choreographed the whole number and also pushed for the skating scenes. I love how he kinda dances down until 4:19 and then just GOES FOR IT. Just amazing!
You are really right! The music reminds me of musicals during the fifties and sixties. The instruments played like trumpets, flautes and others. J feel a big nostalgia
This film had such a silly plot that it got absolutely slammed by critics, and so its really great music, and especially these astonishing five minutes, never got the appreciation they deserved. This is the final on-screen dance performance by the great Gene Kelly -- performed at age 68, for heaven's sake. It was a remarkable valedictory which has sadly sunk into obscurity. (The big finish, from 4:17 on, is just breathtaking, as the years just fall away and Kelly is, by God, GENE KELLY.)
"Astonishing," By Jove, I think you've hit upon the right word. I'm doing my best to keep this flame alight; I show this clip to everyone I can. To me, this is one of the singular moments in film history, right up there with The Music Man's "Pick a Little, Talk a Lot" scene.
i don't think Olivia ever had another opportunity to showcase her hidden dance skills either. She was never the greatest modern dancer but that didn't matter with her looks, charm and that voice. To keep up with Gene and not look a fool, even at his age, was no easy task.
Olivia Newton-John's dancing is really under appreciated. Having to pair up with a legend like Gene Kelly and not be up to his level could have been a disaster but she held her own. Nice work Olivia and Gene. Also to composer John Farrar and choreographers Jerry Trent and Danny Ortega.
Her dance routine was ok at best. It was quite stiff and you could see she was overthinking her moves. It's not surprising considering her legendary dance partner.
@@lvg777 If anything, I'd call hers slightly over-practiced, not stiff. Being paired up in a scene like this with the likes of Gene Kelly would make anyone intimidated. She may have been overcompensating slightly, but it still worked out well for the scene overall. After all, Olivia is playing Terpsichore (as Kira) here, the Greek Muse of Poetry and _Dance._
@@lvg777 Considering that unlike many of Kelly's partners in the past Olivia Newton John is not a dancer, she did remarkably well, and I'm also sure that Kelly took that into consideration when he choreographed the scene. "I remember.... everything. Oh how I remember." "I was born to love you for eternity." How classic, how flawless, timeless. How perfect. Simply love it! We'll all love Olivia, and Gene, for eternity. Thanks for posting!
I read this movie was a flop! NO WAY! It is in my top 10 favorite movies. I was crazy for E.L.O. and they wrote some or all of the music! I cried the day Olivia passed away. What a loss. WHAT A LEGEND!

Everybody! Come on! Let's escape! Let's altogether step back in time and be freewheelingly and thrillingly alive - kinda keepin' up our psychosomatic energy aglow and lettin' up the monochromatic drudgery ultra-low out of a truly momentary and salutary golden oldies sentiment-jampacked leisure treat. For in good faith there does still prismatically and mystically exist a magic emanating from taking a quite special aura-stimulating breathing space in the course of the all-encompassing spirit-depressing cataclysmic events that are alarmingly flaring up at the present time. This Mr Gene Kelly / Dame Olivia Newton-John's decently bitter-balming and jitter-calming musical number from the 1980 Mr Lawrence Gordon-produced fantasy musical-romance classic, "Xanadu", will dynamically sweep every viewer's feet off and in a way will nostalgically bring back the euphoric fond memories of the thrills-laden golden times. For it's an absolutely breathtaking and earthshaking moment to feast on. Inarguably, this classily and gutsily rendered close-to six-min musical piece is like a time-transporting dream sight where we want to be in ludic height and rhapsodic delight. Seeing as his last full-length musical movie, Mr Gene Kelly ( being routinely gingered up with his daintily unique and chic signature dancing style so as to edifyingly and dignifyingly put up a sweet-flavored tone and charm-savored pomp in this Mr Kenny Ortega's quite awesomely and blithesomely dance staging-managed spectacle ) had gallantly and pleasantly given the central focus of public attention to his grippingly smashing and dashing 4-time Grammy award-winning partner by manifestly letting her overflowing drawing + glowing power shine through - not only her legitly-wondrous singing prowess but likewise her fitly-lustrous dancing coolness. Both Mr Kelly and Dame Newton-John had incontestably and irrefutably laid bare their blissful ecstasy and fantasy modes to the melodiously and euphoniously arranged music of Mr James Monaco / Mr Joseph McCarthy's "You Made Me Love You ( I Didn't Want to Do It )" serving as simply demurely leisurely song intro in a bright-line honeyed tempo and following this brief sweet prelude is Mr John Farrar's arty-craftily drawn up tip-top singable-and-danceable piece, "Whenever You're Away from Me". These two extraordinary and legendary Hollywood icons were able to kick in their unerringly combined displays of exceptional commitment, recreational excitement, and three-dimensional sentiment in order to create such a romantically enrapturing and magically recapturing moment. One more thing their spirits were tunefully energized and synergized by their integrally personable and seasonable qualities like the eupeptic charm, the emphatic work ethic, the systematic mindset, the emblematic polished skill, and the diplomatic shared goals penchant. For that, their rock-solid bonding does deservingly need the melodies of our sonorous upbeat praises. So do always remember to bring all your dreams alive for you. Just keep on dreaming and teeming with a bundle of aspiration, exhilaration, and inspiration amidst the current global trouble and hubble-bubble unfathomable. You better never stray. 'Cause this utterly singled-out number will never be far away to inspire you. Just dream this rare moment away relaxing and enjoying the best part of this 80s musical picture. For sure you will never feel this way again, and that is to be suddenly impactfully and tactfully entertained in full swing. Such an invitingly pretty cool sight!! It certainly is all the way.

I didn't know that Olivia could dance that well...! Watching this today, gives me a wide range of emotion...esp since she just passed last week. A lot of things have been revealed, through the years, since this was first posted. Xanadu was a box office dud...not sure why you'd want to celebrate the 40th anniversary of it. lol
This is my Gene was my favorite dancer. He was one of the reason I got into dance. Olivia is just amazing. This movie was a dream for me.
How alive they are here in this song & dance.. we will miss this kind of show. Thank you Olivia & Gene.
I was 16yo, in Guadalajara. Well aware of the legend of Gene Kelly. BUT I was so impressed with Olivia’s dancing, so effortlessly natural. Like she did that every day.
God bless you, Liv. And you are in my prayers.
At the time the movie "Xanadu" (which included this scene) was made and released (1980), Gene Kelly was about 67 and Olivia was about 32.
This is one of the Better Clip of this Classic >>> Whenever You're Away From Me >>> Starring Gene Kelly & Olivia Newton~John in XANADU ( 1980) ... Thank You So Much for the enhanced Video & Audio & for Sharing! Stay Safe & Stay Humble! 🕯🌷🕊🌍♥️
I didn't know that Olivia could dance that well...! Watching this today, gives me a wide range of emotion...esp since she just passed last week. A lot of things have been revealed, through the years, since this was first posted. Even though it's been discovered that most successful and famous artists, (not saying that's the case here) have sold themselves out and now serve the dark...I can't help but be so appreciative of their talent.💖
Serve the dark? You need help lady
I love this movie!!! I never understood why It wasn’t more successful at the box office
Loved it more than Grease
I loved this movie when I was younger.
I was in love with this man also as a kid.🌹 Oliva was such a beautiful woman.
I wanted to be her.
Today this song brings a whole new meaning in my life . A person on the mind that thoughts of them are Never far away....
By far the best part of the movie.
One of my fav scenes!!!! Rip Olivia and Gene.💜💜💜💜
there will never be 2 performers like this again as they are the tip of the talent tree!!!
It's a fantastic scene. They obviously HAD fun doing this movie and this scene. I do know much about BOTH of the main two decades this movie pays sincere homage to- the 40s and 70s. Gene Kelly passed on well before Newton-John had- 1989. They're dancing together in Heaven now. I just seriously HOPE Heaven is real.
I'm looking forward to seeing John Lennon in concert with Mom up there! ☝🥲
What a beautiful scene❤
R.I.P Olivia Newton John (1948-2022) and R.I.P Gene Kelly (1916-1996)
Inspired pairing. Gorgeous routine
charming performances
RIP Gene and Olivia 💕
