My family did this last October based on one of your videos. It was perfection!
So glad you had such a wonderful time!
Beautiful! Such an intimate and personal time to be in the Vatican Museums. It never gets old.
Thanks so much for watching! Yes, I think it's a very special way to visit the Vatican museums. I'm with you - it never gets old!
Two days ago I did it at night…at 6am for the incredible Key Master’s tour. Definitely worth the extra money. It was so wonderful to emerge from the serenity of this tour after 8am and to see the chaos of the crowds that I had paid to miss!
How wonderful! So glad you did that tour - it's amazing isn't it?
your videos are really amazing thank you so much for sharing, so much great content
Wow thanks so much for your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoy my content!
How glorious to be there with so few people! Thank you this wonderful visit and information.
It was glorious and I highly recommend it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is another great time to visit the Vatican Elyssa that you have suggested for us, a nice way to avoid the crowds. Thanks once again for another great suggestion.
Thank you so much Peter! I hope you'll try this out next time you are in Rome!
Great.
Elyssa thank you so much for your information! We just arrived in Rome today and went to a restaurant you recommended, we had a wonderful time and the food was amazing! Thank you so much!!
Oh I'm so glad to hear that! Thanks for letting me know. Enjoy the rest of your stay!
Excellent video as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great info , thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Super informative!
Thanks!
What a great time to visit and miss the crowds!
Yes it is! I love this kind of visit - it always feels so special!
Another awesome video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very helpful as always! Would love to see early and late visits in high season for comparison when that time comes around again.
Thank you! Yes, I did both of these visits in relatively low season, but it's possible that both will get a little more crowded as we get into higher season. But I still think that going first thing in the morning or close to closing will always be less crowded than during the middle of the day.
Thanks so much for useful information as usual. The Vatican museum is so beautiful when it’s not so crowded as it was when I was there. 😊
Thanks for watching! Yes, I love to visit the museums but I agree, when they are extremely crowded it really takes away from the experience. But it is possible to go when it's less crowded so I hope you'll get the chance to come back and try these tips!
Great as usual! Got my tickets for 8 am. We will then try and get into St Peter’s. Only way to get in is stand in line right? Then we will do the tour of the Roman Necropolis under the museum on your recommendation.
Thank you so much!
Here's my video about how to beat the lines at St. Peter's Basilica:
czcams.com/video/JfBlqsU91Pc/video.html
If you are planning to visit the Necropolis at the Via Triumphalis, just remember they only run tours once or twice a day only on Fridays and Saturdays. So I'd get that ticket first and then you can plan your visits around that.
Have a great time!
Excellent thanks Elyssa. What is the latest entry time on weekdays? Are the old papal cars still on display? Thank you.
On weekdays, the museums close at 7PM and last entry is at 5PM. Yes, the old papal cars are still on display in the Carriages pavilion on the ground floor level.
Great thank you Elyssa !
Can u introduce some Rome’s good restaurants please? Thank you!
Thank you for watching. I have a lot of pages on my website with my best tips, including by neighborhood, where to eat near the tourist sites, by cuisine, gluten-free, pizza, etc. You can start here:
www.romewise.com/places-to-eat-in-rome.html
Awesome video thank you for putting this together. We just booked our tickets for june 18th and it was a WAY more stressful 15 minutes than i anticipated. We booked a 3pm entry and then the happy hour add on. Can you explain how thats different than what you did? I saw that was an option when you booked but didnt mention it. I know you did a video on the happy hour tour a year ago but what we booked appears to not be a tour and all the information we could find seems to be conflicting as the event has changed over the years. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching. Yes, I know, getting Colosseum and Vatican tickets has been stressing people out a lot lately, due to the supply / demand issues.
In this video, I purchased my own tickets and went in at the latest time slot possible. We did not purchase the happy hour in advance, because 1) it's possible to purchase it on site if you decide you want it last-minute (as long as there is space available) and 2) we knew we didn't want the happy hour because we had dinner plans for after this visit.
In another video I did, about a tour called Extra Time, we booked a specific tour that included a happy hour. This tour is supposed to be available on their website but it's not yet, although I have been told that you can book it by emailing them.
Either way, in your case, when you go in at 3PM, you will encounter large crowds. You COULD stay a really long time (prolonging your happy hour) until closing and the crowds should thin out much closer to closing.
Wonderful video so informative! I'm currently considering a visit on May 25th in the early morning or late evening, but the Vatican Museum website says it is currently not bookable. Do you know how far in advance they release the tickets?
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you found it helpful. The Vatican Museums releases entry tickets 60 days in advance. So for May 25th you'll need to check back on March 25 or 26th.
You’re such a pro, literally uploaded a video that answered my exact question and replies to everyone’s comments. With a 4:30 entrance, any exhibits to prioritize while it’s still light outside? Does Sistine look much different day vs night? Should I skip pinacoteca early and come back towards end when light is gone? Thanks much.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your comments. I'm so glad I answered your questions with this video.
The Sistine Chapel has no windows so it has the same light pretty much throughout the day.
The pinacoteca also looks mostly the same throughout the day. There is really only one room that has big windows and in my opinion it makes no difference.
If you saw my other video where I visited in the morning, the light is different in the Maps gallery but otherwise, I think you'll find the museums beautiful any time of day.
If you follow what I did in this video, you won't be able to come back to the pinacoteca because in this visit, the whole point was to stay inside the Sistine Chapel until closing time, which meant we were among the last people in there and had it nearly to ourselves.
In short, I would visit these museums at the time that is convenient or preferable to you. The light may change in some parts but to me, it's always beautiful.
Awesome, yes watched through both videos in entirety, seems afternoon/evening visit is best done slow paced so that you end in Sistine without backtracking. This suits a family with kids well. Ensures seeing the earlier courtyards and halls with plenty of light.
Yes, you are right, the best way to have a quiet enjoyable experience, especially in the Sistine Chapel, is to come either first thing, and go directly there, or to visit at the end of the day, winding up inside the Sistine Chapel towards closing. Glad you found my videos helpful!
Do you think visiting in the PM is better if also visiting St Peters and the Necropolis? We would plan to visit those 2 places before if we went with the PM visit or after if we went with the AM visit. Are lines to get into St Peters better in the AM vs PM?
The lines for Saint Peter's Basilica are long pretty much all day and you can wait sometimes over an hour to get in.
There are a few ways to beat those lines including coming at 6:50AM when it opens, taking a guided tour that includes the shortcut, or taking a tour of the Scavi where St. Peter is buried, which ends inside the basilica.
If by Necropolis you are indeed referring to visiting Saint Peter's tomb, then you will also get to see the basilica at the end.
The first thing you need to do is book that scavi visit because tickets are harder to come by. Once you have that booked, you can decide whether to visit the museums before or after. Just make sure to give yourself plenty of time between visits to get between sites.
If you are instead referring to the Necropolis at the Via Triumphalis, that is not connected to any other site and so yes, you'd then have to wait in line for Saint Peter's basilica separately. Again, I'd get those tickets first because they only go once or twice on weekends, and then you can plan your other visits around that. Hope that helps!
What areas would be best to prioritize with more sunlight when going in the evening? And now that you've shown us the early morning and late evening entrances, which would you recommend to a first time visitor?
For a first time visitor, I would suggest any of these options:
1) Take the pristine Sistine tour with Walks of italy - you'll go in at 8AM so it's not exclusive, but you'll have someone explain the art (there is so much to see and it can be overwhelming!). Also, one of the huge benefits is they can take the shortcut into Saint Peter's Basilica from the Sistine Chapel, saving you a lot of time.
2) Go on your own in the early morning like I did in my other video. The light is really beautiful. Considering you need to go quickly to get to the galleries before the crowds, you'll need to follow what I did and/or be prepared in advance so you know what to do.
3) Go in late afternoon like I did, where you can sort of take your time because you WANT to get to the Sistine Chapel as late as possible like we did.
With options 2 or 3, you'll have to visit Saint Peter's Basilica separately, even on a different day. Also with options 2 and 3, you won't have a guide but you could use the audio guide.
So it really depends on what you want to get out of this visit. Either way, I hope you have a wonderful time! The Vatican Museums are amazing when you can enjoy them without the crowds!

Hi, Excellent Video. I am from India... We have National Identity Card called Adhaar. Can we show this in the Vatican Entrance or Passport is a must.... Could you please clarify. Thanks
Thank you for watching. As I mentioned, your passport is not necessary. Any form of government photo ID will suffice.
@@Romewise Thank you
Once again thank you so much Alyssa . I have question, is it darker in museums at night as your camera shows?
Thanks for watching! Yes it is a bit darker at night especially right now that it's March. It should be dark like in my video now through early April, I think, and then again in fall from late September.
As we get into summer, it's still pretty light at 8pm although it's really more of a golden hour.
@@RomewiseGood morning/eve to you .I will take advantage of the night hours in June, I hope their is light enough to photograph the Artwork !
Yes, I am sure you will love it and the light will be wonderful and just fine for photography. @@kenboydart
Hi I was wondering if you can visit the Sistine Chapel twice on the same ticket/visit?
Once you are inside the Vatican Museums, you can stay as long as you like until closing time. However, there is no re-entry.
We are going to Rome on July this year, but haven't bought the tickets to the Vatican Museums yet. But I have, say, an overbearing question: what to do first in order to avoid as best as possible the very long lines, the Basilica or the Vatican Museums. I know I'm overthinking this, but I just can't help it.
Thanks for any advice
Thank you for your kind words.

Just have a genuine question. I know it’s preferable to buy online tickets and skip the line but do they still offer physical tickets at the entrance if I were to wait in line or did they decide to not sell the physical tickets anymore?
It's a valid question! For a while after the pandemic, they were only selling tickets online for most sites. Now, for most sites, including the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, you CAN purchase tickets on site. However, most of the time you can expect long lines so just be prepared for that.
Do you know which Vatican Museums/galleries are least visited. I have a son who is 17 and a history buff, but he has ADHD and may not do well in the crowds.
Yes, you can easily visit some of the lesser-visited galleries. These include:
The Pinacoteca (paintings gallery) - although this is not necessarily always quiet
The Gregory Profane wing - one of my favorites and never crowded
The Anima Mundi - almost nobody knows about this wing and I have never seen more than 1-2 people in there
The Etruscan Wing - sometimes they funnel people up here when the main galleries get really crowded but I find most people don't even know about this wing
The Egyptian Wing - it CAN get crowded but often, it's not
The Borgia apartments - I have never seen more than 2-3 people in here and these are some of the most stunning frescoes in the museums (with all due respect to Michelangelo and Raphael)
The Braccio Nuovo /New Wing) - also not always uncrowded but definitely less crowded than other wings
I hope that helps!
Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply
My pleasure! @@theadhdminimalist5060
