The east coast of Taiwan is pretty rural and rustic. With our intent to circumvent the entire country we didn't spend much time here hiking and exploring. If you're a nature lover you might want to consider spending more time here.

There are actually many surfing beaches on Taiwan's east coast but you need to ask the locals first because some of the beaches are actually bordering deep underwater cliffs. There is an annual international surfing competition that is held on rotating spots.

The locals we spoke to mentioned the same thing ... you need to be mindful of the flukey currents at some of the east facing beaches.
