      1. Semi-correct. The Civil War started with the objective of preserving the Union as the rebelling (Confederate) states seceded before Lincoln's inauguration because they were afraid of slavery being abolished. The war started because they wanted to bring the southerners/Confederate states back into the Union. Lincoln needed enough of a victory to issue the Emancipation Proclamation (all slaves in/from rebelling states are free) which happened to be the Battle of Antietam. As a result, this changed the Northerners' objective of the war - to free the 'freed' slaves.
      2. Lincoln only freed the slaves within rebelling (Confederate) states to keep the border states at his side. Note that the border states had slaves. Yes, you could say it's war tactic. The Northerners did need better morale or idea to fight for. Yes, he technically did not have the power over Confederate states, but he had a problem: runaway slaves fled to the Union from the Confederates. By issuing the Proclamation, this made runaway slaves from the south in the Union FREE, allowing them to participate in the army. Again, he needed to keep the border states at his side so he only freed slaves from the Confederate states. For clarification (thanks to brett knoss), Lincoln did NOT free slaves within the Union during this time, the 13th Amendment did.

    here's my take on it as a black man. in America, we have rights. the flag in this case is someones right for what they believe in, they are expressing their beliefs as i express mine. i am not in agreement with the confederate flag, nor do i have to like it. however, forcing someone to remove a flag is as bad as forcing someone to believe what you want them to believe. this is our freedom in the US, if this freedom were not there, i would still be a slave today. i have the freedom to not have to agree and i can shop wherever else i want. i believe EVERYONE who is an American citizen has this right.

The flag was then moved to the grounds in front of the State House, and still debate continued and even a boycott of the state that was active until it was removed last year.

    The flag is part of history, *SO IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM* .Lots of the defenders of the Confederate Flag use “i’m an American” or “it’s only American” or “it’s part of America” somewhere in their argument, which i find ridiculous because the Confederacy SECEDED FROM AMERICA. In reality, that flag represents not just a nation, but a nation and a people who were against equal rights and was very pro-slavery. It’s like the Nazi swastika; nobody still waives the Nazi flag on a flagpole because “it’s a part of history”. Nazi flags are in museums and personal collections. The Nazis were a people focused on oppression and persecution of Jewish people, just like the Confederacy was a nation focused on oppression and enslavement of African people.

They were still part of America since they were officially call the Confederate states of America. Also we still have the right to fly any flag we choose on private property. Just because it’s public view does not mean it’s public property. You may not like it but you still gotta respect their rights to fly it. My neighbor fly the Irish flag and I hate that flag due for the Irish Republicans killing my people and I’m sure they don’t like my British and Ulster flags flying but we still respect each other rights to fly them.

      @miriamrebekahshapiro4671 Před 6 lety +3

      connor watson Okay first, I’m using America and the US interchangeably and playing semantics weakens your argument. Second, the difference between your problem with the Irish flag and the Unite States’ problem with the Confederate flag is that Ireland is not a country that represents the murder of British people. The countries had beef in the past, but they make amends and continue on as allies because the countries are not inherently bad. It’s the same with the US and UK. The Confederacy on the other hand, was founded to continue the practice of harsh African slavery and as retaliation at the election of Abraham Lincoln, in other words in retaliation against the US’s representative democratic election process, one of the key parts of America’s government.

That’s why “supposedly” send troops to this austere countries to protect that freedom and right to just that.
      Now this flag...is completely different argument. Hypothetically lets say country A tried to invade the US. They were successful in taking over a few states but where eventually stopped. Should the US allow Country A to fly it’s flag in those areas they were able to take over before they were stopped? If your answer to that is no...than your point is mute. It’s not heritage, or tradition. It’s paying respect to a group of individuals that tried and failed to overthrow the US government.

      Snipe Stud00 first of all how are we removing history by removing one of the millions of flags that excist in this world? Since I'm certain that that flag isn't even a genuine civil war flag but instead just a cheap Chinese made one so what history is excactly getting destroyed? Second of all you scream suppression of freedom of speech yet you ignore that the critisism against that dumb flag is also freedom of speech.
      I mean I know it's also the guys fault for not paying attention to the land he bought when buying the restaurant or for not just putting something like a giant billboard saying something like"I'm legally not allowed to remove this dumb flag" but that still doesn't change the fact that this whole situation is really weak and dumb.

    • @brandoncaldwell95
      @brandoncaldwell95 Před 6 lety +11

      knijn Lets see, try looking for the flag. They do not sell them anymore. I had to go to a vintage flag site to find it. A genuine flag wouldnt have lasted as cotton rots. All confederate relics are gone. Even statues were removed.
      Secondly, freedom of speech is everywhere. You can disagree, but ou cannot suppress my expression of it and representing it. Just because you dont like something dont be blaming racism when the flag never represented it to begin with. Its a BATTLE FLAG. The actual confederate flag is something entirely different.

      Snipe Stud00 oh for fuck sake quit your bullshit it took me five seconds to find this link m.dhgate.com/wholesale/confederate+flags.html or are you trying to say those 80 cent flags from China are all old genuine flags from the war.
      And are you really implying that I am not allowed to state the obvious fact that is: the flag being a dumb flag from a losing side who supported slavery from an old civil war wich is used by dumb people to express what basacly is their "freedom of hate speech."
      It's just so ironic that people like you scream suppression of freedom of speech but when other used their freedom of speech you go on and tell them that they can't be doing that since it disrespect their dumb believes. Since listen buddy: freedom of speech isn't freedom of critisism.

      knijn Look bud, when i said buy, i kent going down to the local store. Amazon, walmart, target, sears, ebay, kmart, ect. They do not carry them and have removed anything battle flag related. You can still get it, but you have to go to oddball sites and what not. Even they they are veyond cheaply made or altered. They are not made like an actual flag but a novalty. Now, were you not taught the old saying "if you cant say anything nice, then dont say anything at all". Trust me, i could go out and tell people thy are fat ass fucking slobs and so on. Thing is, i dont. Hell, i dont even tell a drug addict they are an addict. I dont care if you disagree, but same time you do not order me to remove something when its my right to display what i believe in. You dont know what politician i go for and you sure dont know my life to understand the way i present myself. To you im some hillybilly old POS driving, confederate flag lovin, idiot from the south. Thing is, im not. That restraunt simply could display that the flag pole is not theirs and leave it. Even join together with the camp and have them allow the sign or put another flag with it. But no, they are going legal battles for somthing they do not own and can not say somthing about. Hell, i highly dout you even know what the war was actually about. It was not slavery, or did the flag represent it. Maybe look up the founding fathers and see they were all slavery supportive. Hell, the south could have won, but it wasnt til old Ab popped off its slavery we are fighting for and even requested the help of britain. They knew the south could have won being surppressed like the north was doing. They had to pop somthing off to turn people against themselves.
      This is why illinformed argue. You dont knowbut what youve been told and take shit at its said instead of looking facts up. Hell, you saw it yourself. That there pretty black woman was happy to see it. Many blacks like the flag. Its the idiot ones that do not understand it making a fuss.
      Once again, youre suppressing people and demanding they change somthing they value and believe in. Its like me ordering you to be a muslim, budist, christian, atheist, or jewish as its what i believe in. Even me telling you to divorce your wife because shes too pretty or you too are too happy. What logical sense is that? Let sleeping dogs lie and move on. Let people express themselves. The only thing you should be standing up for are things that are wrong. Like littering or standing up for someone or animal. I dont see many of people going to save a kitten that fell out from a car on the road. Hell, i actually see people throwing animals out yet crying "thats animal abuse" when they see a neglecred cat on tv. Really? Pot that called the kettle black.
      Theres more important things than a flag you need to worry about.

      As a PoC, when I see the confederate flag on a car, home or business I see it as a sign that I am not welcome or safe. So based on the close proximity of this flag to his business, I would not venture in to check and see if he condones the flag or wants my business.

    • @finaltwo
      @finaltwo Před 4 lety +2

      Christina Marsh I mean I understand completely what the flag stands for and don’t think they should be flown.
      But it’s not the guys fault, there’s nothing he can do about it, and knowing that you still wouldn’t eat at his place?
      I mean when did we loose our minds to the point that a flag that has nothing to do with someone would make them not do business there?

    • @christinamarsh5388
      @christinamarsh5388 Před 4 lety +3

      @@finaltwo I am hopeful that he figures out how to disassociate from the flag in some way, but until it was removed I would not feel safe and not shop there. I guess I lost my mind the first time that I was spat and called the n-word by a classmate who had rebel stickers on his binder. I guess I lost my mind when traveling in Arkansas and when entering into a gas station was greeted by the rebel flag and told that I did not belong there and was refused gas.... I have many more stories.... So in order to keep sane, I avoid potentially traumatic situations. It sucks that his business is not thriving, but the inclusion of a sign that says all are welcome and going to a few community and church meetings might change his neighbors perception of his business.

    • @finaltwo
      @finaltwo Před 4 lety +1

      Christina Marsh I mean I sympathize with you, I’ve been a victim of a hate crime. I avoid people with “good old boy” mentalities. I very recently (last two years) got educated on the rebel flag, but and would understand why not knowing someone wouldn’t shop there.
      But knowing the owner doesn’t want that flag up, it’s not his flag, and wants it down should matter also. Unfortunately in America we have laws that are outdated and almost impossible to change.
      But this could literally happen to anyone, this racist made sure that flag would fly even after his death. The current owners livelihood is on the line because of forces outside of his control, I think that should be under consideration.
      It’s also like if the Westbro Baptist Church was out with a “God Hates Fags” sign in front of a restaurant. I know that they are not affiliated with the restaurant, if I want to eat there I’ll walk right past the bigots.
