    We've had 2 mane coon cats in last 5 yrs...
    They are huge cats...both of ours were the most loving cats we ever had...they don't mind if you pick them up and hold them...all our other dislike being held...
    Rascal, our current...lays on my mom like a baby would...I just love him.

    so much appreciated "great technique of selective breeding" led to the fact that the healthy Maine Coon cat breed became sickly. as the woman in the video says, by "forgetting" about this breed, the number of individuals was reduced to one that was threatened with extinction. but because of this later when this breed was recreated there was too little genetic pool , and thus cats too closely related were breed. which led to sickness. but unfortunately, for many people, the purity of the breed is more important than its health , and instead of occasionally crossbreeding cats to improve their health by increasing genetic diversity , they ban crossbreeding
    condemning cats to a permanent genetic defect.

    I’m so glad that there’s channels on CZcams now that are actually showing this beautiful animal now I am not a cat person. I love dogs but I’ll tell you if I wasn’t 71 years old and I could afford it I would buy one of these beautiful cats no heartbeat, make sure it had a lot of room to run around and play and have fun

    Had maines growing up and they all had some health issues unfortunately.I was a kid so my mom didnt listen but we had a mama cat that (eventually after having so many babies) had fits were she would attack your feet if you walked past her.I kept one of her babies when i moved out ( my beautiful bella girl) she always had something going on and was at the vet all the time. My sister kept another boy that had bladder issues. "Breeders should all be vetted no matter what. My mom used it as a cash grab and i promised my girl i would never treat an nimal like that ever. If you cant breed to help a breed positively just dont do it. There are millions of animals already here that need love.

    • @kevinbuja8105
      @kevinbuja8105 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yes they can. I lived in southwest FL, and my Maine Coon did well because of the a/c. If you wish you can give them a “lion cut”. The entire body, except for the mane, around the paws, and (optional) a ball of fur on the end of the tail, is shaved. One result of the lion cut, is they will snuggle more, because their fur is short.
      Hope this helps.

    My cat adopted me two years ago as a hopeless ball of wet and tangled fur. I thought he was a she until the vet told me otherwise. He is either a small Maine Coon or an ordinary Norwegian Forest. I don't think there is any difference and your video doesn't help prove me wrong.

    How dare these people almost killed them off ! They usually die of cancer ! I wonder y ? They r beautiful , loving , smart & whatever else that they can do ! We bred them to keep them in a fresh bloodline where we got to 11 generations ! We got to sell them of all colors for 800$ a kitten ! But I had to stop for personal reasons so I ended giving them away to some friends !

      larger members of many species have an increased cancer risk. Tall humans get cancer more than short ones due to more growth hormone production

    Also failed by refusing to let them go outside and be cats. Mine adores going out to play with her moggie friend.

    • @averydavis1943
      @averydavis1943 Před rokem +3

      I 100% agree. Where I live, keeping a cat exclusively inside is considered cruel. Obviously there are exceptions e.g. the cat is old/sick/disabled.
      Get them neutered, microchipped, collared and you could even get a tracker collar attachment if you want to be extra safe. But a naturally curious creature such as a cat should not be kept in such unstimulating environments. The bottom line is, you cannot make your home as enriching as the outside.

      @@averydavis1943 People really underestimate the Maine Coon. They are independent and smart. Mine doesn't go far. She has established a territory around the house and mostly plays in the fields.

      @@averydavis1943you failed to mention environmental reasons. Where I lived in southwest Florida, there are panthers, bears, alligators, elderly drivers, and a species of frog that is absolutely deadly to cats and dogs. So no, I never let any of my cats outdoors.
      I pose this question to you: under these circumstances would you let you cat(s) outside?

    • @averydavis1943
      @averydavis1943 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@kevinbuja8105 No, I would not let my cat out under those conditions. Seems you failed to read my original comment properly, as I clearly stated 'obviously there are certain exceptions' and then proceeded to provide examples. Obviously I cannot list every single one.

      I take my Maine Coon out for walks with a very long lead and harness. She enjoys the time outside sniffing around and hopping on trees.
