  • Are Maine Coon cats expensive? How much do Maine Coon cats live? Do Maine Coon cats get along with other pets? We answer all these questions and more in our Maine Coon Cat 101 video.
❗Important❗When talking about the most common medical conditions, I realized I haven't been specific enough; the second hereditary disease I mention is a heart disease called Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM); it usually affects older individuals, and often the first symptom is sudden death. To detect it earlier, the cat should be screened yearly at a veterinary cardiologist.

I was owned by a Maine Coon cat once, and he lived for 24 years! He was my best buddy for all that time. I had him cremated when he died and now his ashes are in an urn in my office so I see him nearly every day; gone but dearly missed, the best cat to ever bless my life thus far. Well worth having one in yours too.

My 15 year old daughter was living with me while her mother, my ex wife went through a bone marrow transplant for cancer. My daughter and I were setting on the front porch one evening when we heard a frantic meowing coming from across the street. Thinking it was a cat in a tree we investigated and found a little Maine Coon kitten alone in the neighbors landscaping. We adopted the kitten and named him Binx and he didn't leave the crook of my daughters arm for what seemed to be a year, or more. The Maine Coon cat was just what my daughter needed to help her to deal with her moms cancer treatment and fight for life. Her mother Is cancer free and Binx the cat became a cherished pet who lived for 17 years.

Omfg my Maine coon name is binx. Well bynx! He is six months almost seven, the best mouser I ever had. He's caught five in two days (never dreamed that many resides here till he came) and he's my best baby. He owns my heart he's my dream cat I paid five hundred and I'd pay it again he's gorgeous, and I wake up to him curled in my arm or on my head and he loves all seven, yes seven of our dog. Three are pups, they are growing together it's the cutest but he loves my ferrets and guinea pig the most. He checked without the guinea pig everyday for several hours and sticks his arms in his cage and pokes him on the butt and we have a pet rat and he does not pay her any mind at all but if you're a stray mouse in the house you might as well count the minutes till you're in his mouth. I absolutely love him more than anything in this world

I really enjoyed this video and agreed with most of it, short of promoting cat breeders as a source. There are millions of cats abandoned, left to live short brutal lives or given "mercy" by euthanasia when they are overlooked for a designer cat.

Our coonie is moody. So he’s not that calm as we thought this breed would be. He hits with his claws out when he is in a situation he does not prefer; when people he seldom meet want’s to pet him, and sometimes when we who are in his family touch him gently. He is very stubborn. Other times he is very cozy, head towards head is preferable, kissing his forhead and cheeks. But I recognize the fact that he follows us around the house, loves to be in the middle of things! He is very generous with other cats in the neighbourhood. He has a little sister (different breed), and he always offer the food for her first. He is a challenge, but we love him so much!

An experienced cat-owner friend of mine told me something wise: “When you are owned by a cat, you make an appointment with grief.” - So take their example, live in the PRESENT with them, and love them and care for them all that you can! Pet owners make people more human.

2 yrs ago my family took me to adopt a cat for my 21st birthday (we've always had cats, but in 2018 one passed away; she was my best friend and I was devastated) and it turns out he's a maine coon! He is so sweet and just honestly exactly what I needed when I was grieving my other cat. I lost one friend and gained another. If I leave the bathroom door open a crack, he'll run in and sit on the edge of the bathtub like he really wants to spend all his time with me as his companion. It really healed my heart. A couple of my neighbors have seen him through the window and told us that he's a beautiful cat, and it makes me a very proud cat mom

I miss my Maine Coon. Got him at 8 weeks, from a shelter, and he was absolutely very intelligent. If his litter box was too dirty for his taste, he would actually lead me to it. He came running when I got home. He only lived to about 9 years old, but it was time well spent. I forgot to mention his intelligence showed through in other ways; he would never eat "people food", because I once tried to hide medicine in chicken. If you put anything but cat food in his bowl, it would go untouched. Also, you could never let him see you get out the cat carrier. If he saw it, he was gone, because he knew that meant a trip to the vet. He also never got on the counters or the table, because he hated being scolded.

There is little difference between a Maine Coon and a Norwegian Forest Cat, which may average 10% smaller. Still, the bone structure on the two males I've had [you do not "own" them] is at least equal to the Coon. The Paws are huge, and the fur as thick as any Maine Coon. An NFC does have a more triangular face, a heavier "mane", but maybe a shorter tail. Syd, my first NFC had a 12" tail, but Smokey has only 10" of tail. They are not especially playful, but exquisite hunters. Wonderful animals!

As a longtime Maine Coon owner, a lot of this is accurate! But always remember that each cat is an individual, so not all are good with other pets and kids. My dad’s MC absolutely hates other cats and dogs. My old MC was friendly to other cats, she lived to be 14 and she was very in tune with my feelings and cared for me. I miss her so much. But I have another MC now and she’s super loving, energetic, and a goofball. I got her from a breeder that tests for the hereditary diseases, so she cost a good bit but it’s all worth it to have a healthy kitty.
Something I notice is that when you get your kitten, it’s better to wait until they’re 12-14wks old so they spend more time with their mom and siblings to learn manners.

Every reputable breeder I contacted before getting mine wouldn’t sell their Maine Coon kittens before 12 weeks. As mentioned in the video, they are large cats which develop slowly and should stay with the family unit longer than most kittens (so don’t expect a little, tiny kitten.) Also, it took my guy over a year to develop his full adult coat, if you want one that looks totally “Maine Cooney” from day 1 get an older, mature cat.

Had a stupid massive Maine Coon once. He was around before I was, not sure how old he was, but he was at the head two feet tall. The dude did not care about anything - we took him on walks with no leash, gave him baths, and so on, and he was chilled out with everything. Great cat, he was so nice and very, very fluffy. My remaining current cat, three later, is also part Maine Coon (and polydactle calico), and is so very playful and fluffy as well. Love her, and I do miss my first. Our Maine Coon was very vocal…we “talked” to each other often. Sadly, he passed away three years ago. I still miss him. He was the best!

We adopted our Maine Coon mix at the beginning of 2021. He's not a pure bred, but he has a lot of the Maine Coon attributes. Big poofy tail, ear tufts, very chat, loves water, etc. He is only 10 months old. Can't wait to see how big he gets! He loves our two dogs so much. He will seek them out and then rub his head against their chests. Our 10 month old female dog is very protective of him with our calico cat who sometimes bullies our Maine Coon. Our female dog acts like a body guard. It's cute.

I have a two year old maine coon named Tuxie. She is beautiful, she's loving. I never had a cat that would lick like a dog before. She does. Very affectionate and sweet.
I can't speak for all maine coons, I was already a cat person before getting her, but my cat is very very sweet.

Ours was an abandoned one eating out of the dumpster and off of good natured neighbors handouts. Snickers adopted us this early spring! One of our neighbors said hed been hanging outside of our door. Hes been adopted by us since. Hes got a great home now.14 months old and larger than most adult cats ive ever seen. 😀👍

I have a 6-year-old maine coon, he's afraid of pretty much everything (has an anxiety disorder) but he never leaves my side, although he doesn't play very often he's more often then not sleeping at the end of my bed at night and head butting my face whenever he gets the chance. I treat him like he is my child, yet family members don't understand. i know its sad to say but he's my best friend and for some reason at the dead of night i randomly start thinking about him passing away though he's got years ahead of him. Love my Stinky man, don't know what I would do without him.

I bought my maine coon at a shelter. His fur was thin and he was mal nourished. I thought he was a normal long haired cat, but about a month after I brought him home, his maine coon features were obvious. He grew like crazy and fast! Now he's bigger than my jack russel.

I got my first taste of a Main Coon about 2011. He just walk into my house and made him self at home. I didn’t know anything about them. Unfortunately he passed. Got another one. Don’t believe he was 100% coon but boy did he have ALOT of traits. He followed me around EVERY WHERE! Just like my dogs. I had him for 8 years before cancer took him last June😿 I miss that big buger

My Maine Coon (female) looks like a lion. She’s very fussy and doesn’t like people or our other cat. However, if one of us leaves she cries. If someone is still asleep she will knock on the bedroom door. We love her so much!!

My big guy is Marty, he is my best friend! I was at a cat shelter with my son he had to do community service, I spent the day playing with the cats and hanging with my friend who ran the shelter while he was cleaning. Once we were leaving I picked up my purse off the office floor and this little fluff ball was sleeping in it!!!!
That was it I knew he chose me and I am so grateful for my big loving Maine Coon Marty! Out of every pet I have ever owned and there have been many, and many different species as well Marty is by far the best pet I have ever had ♡♡♡

I found an abandoned two-year-old Maine Coon in Delta Junction, Alaska, in the middle of winter when it was about 10 below and snowing. This injured cat came to us with a large wound on his belly with some intestines hanging out. His tail was cut off about halfway. We took him to the vet who fixed his problems, and we adopted him. He was the best cat we ever had! Great with the kids (even when the babies would belly flop on him). He lived to be around 18 years old.

I live with an indoor-outdoor Maine Coon (she was indoor-outdoor from birth.) She is a total joy, waits for me outside doors, wakes me up for breakfast, lets out long meows when I come home, and generally is a fabulous companion. She will also fall asleep on my chest--sometimes for 30 or 45 minutes. She sleeps all night every night on my bed. I laugh at her playful antics all the time, including when she starts a game of chase (I am the one doing the chasing) and also when she tries to "murder" various objects in the house with the percussive motion of her back feet. She is sooooo quick with her front paws but always gentle even though she could probably slice open my hands during playtime if she wanted. I am fond of saying she is the best Kit-Kit in the universe (I know...we all think that.)

As kittens around 2 weeks old, the one trait that separates the average breed to the Coon is how they have the largest set of paws besides their thick owl like head. But it is still the trait that gives it the name a Coon Cat of having simular tone of coat along with their stripes as a few have a marking across the eyes of a lighter shade of tone.

I got my kitty from a relative that had kittens. All the way in Pennsylvania, we drove her in the car with little to no carrier across states to our home She hated it but we found ways to keep her calm. Now she’s grown up and so so close to me, so sweets and quite the hunter. Keeping mice out of our house.
