I saved a kitten once not realizing she was a Maine Coon. She turned out to be THE BEST cat EVER. SO smart, very clever, very affectionate, love playing and kept that kitten like playfulness her whole life. She lived 22 years and died in my arms in my kitchen. I cried like a little kid for 2 days.....

I rescued my Main Coon from the shelter. Actually he rescued me. I had just lost my Bingle, Sara of many years and I was devastated. I could not walk into my apartment knowing she was not there. My friend took me to the shelter and the first kitten room I walked into was a very large black&white MainCoon who began frantically clawing at the glass door of his cage. That was it for me. He sat on my lap on the drive home and made himself comfortable in my apartment. I named him Big Mike and he clearly knew I am his Mom and he owns me. He is my gentle giant.😍😍😍

My main coon cat Max, who I rescued at a shelter as a young kitten, was as close to human as any cat I ever adopted. Every evening ,weather permitting, he would sit outside my door waiting for me so we could take our walk together. I would say "o.k Maxie, time to take our walk." Max would walk with me holding his tail straight up high. After our walk he would stay outside, but he would come in through my open window about two or three am. He would lie on top of me in my bed and go to sleep. I had Max for 20 years. When he was ready to leave me to die, he walked into the woods nearby to die in peace and quiet lying under a bush. Ten years later, I still miss my Max.
I had many cats through the years, but Max was a one of a kind special cat .

I've had a love affair with my MC for 14 years. I've never had litter, separation or behavior problems. Sounds like I've been lucky!? We have always lived by ourselves. Took him 5 years before he would sleep with me. And even longer to want cuddles. Always pets and scratches though. He finally became a cuddle bug at about 10 yrs. He minds me very well and is a great traveler. He rarely makes a sound in the car. He has been my best cat, I've had many over 57 years. Thank you for sharing your fur babies ❤️

I was playing string with him last night. You have not really lived until you see a 16lb cat with the zoomies. He comes to me when he wants to play. He sits by his toy bucket and waits for me to come and play. Does the same thing with grooming and food. He will even tell us whether he wants wet food, kibble or Temptations/Greenies. We have had many cats over the years and he is by far the most entertaining animal we ever had.

We got our Maine Coon cross from the SPCA and he had been returned to the shelter twice. He hid for the first week. He has the run of an old house and 2 yards. Oddly he will stay in the yards. He was about 2 when we got him. He is the sweetest cat we have ever had and he is so smart. Has his own language and talks to us a lot. Bonus is he is an excellent hunter. When he finally came out he went to the scratch post right away and has been using his litter boxes right from the start. We have 3 Large litter boxes for him and he took to them right off. What a delightful animal. He is a total mommas boy too. He still does not like to be picked up for more than a minute or so. He is a total gentleman and never howls for food, just a gentle trill.

I got Mochi at 10 weeks. She had no fear & explored fully on her own. She played and was very happy. She is a picky eater and food is not her priority. She does not follow me all around, nor does she sleep (nor DID) she sleep a lot. The first year was the easiest because she was getting to know her new home & interested and enthused about her toys. Now she’s 3 and all she cares about is going outside which I cannot let her do, at will, for both for safety reasons and HOA rules. I take her out on a leash and harness at least 1 hr a day and she would prefer to be INSIDE for no more than an hr instead. She is not very big & has never weighed more than 10 lbs.
I note these things to advise that not all the ‘expectations’ listed on the video will necessarily be the case. Cats are like people: individuals. Of course there are some characteristics for which one can make a blanket statement but do not think something is wrong if your new kitten does not live up to the expectations assumed in this video.

She loves looking in the mirror on bathroom sink while I give her wild attn. Quite a site. Her life is slowly winding down, 16 years old. Sweet babies!
We have a solid white Mainecoon named Zero. He has two green eyes and he is a little stinker!😼😽
He's very vocal and would stay in your lap 24 hours a day if he could. He's very curious and inquisitive. He doesn't like doors being shut and always wants inside whatever forbidden room to see what's going on in there🤣
He sleeps alot but when the lights go out at night, he gets frustrated because we're sleeping and we're upstairs rather than downstairs on the couch. So he'll roam the house and just start talking LOUD until you yell at him to stop lol
He's also very jealous of his little sister or anyone that steals attention from him but we love him to death and it's going to be very traumatic for my wife when he passes one day. He's 10 now but we're hoping he lives another ten years! 🙏
Oh yeah and he snores really loud 🤣

    • @jenniferd.820
      @jenniferd.820 Před rokem

OMG! he sounds like my kitten lol, he doesn't like closed doors and even when someone is taking a shower he tries to open the door.
And the first time I heard him snore I thought he was sick and rushed him to the vet crying. After some hours of observation, he fell asleep at the vet and started snoring his whiskers off. Welp the vet thought I was crazy (I had just never heard any of my past cats snore before). A long life to your floofy troublemaker 😄

Moose is ADORABLE! You are such a good cat mom to him. When we took him home I gave his cat mom and dad snuggles and thanked them for trusting me with their youngest kitten. (Intellectually, I knew they didn't give a crap, but I wanted to make the gesture!) Romulus hid for a few hours that evening but afterwards he was fine - and now he thinks he's the king of Pride Rock!

When you are introducing your kitten to your other cats, put some scent( light perfume, or talc on the back of all the cat’s necks, that way they will recognize the same smell on each other and bond more easily) I always put my new kittens in the spare room, with their own litter box, and I sleep in the spare room with the kitten so they can cuddle with me during the night!

  • @dillee9988

Mine was an absolute sucker for a tummy scratch/tickle, he would come to you while watching TV and turn and toss around until he positioned himself /his belly perfectly under my hand for a tummy tickle/scratch. He got many showers because he thought it was great fun to roll around on his back in the dust outside. I would take him into the shower with me, and shower him. Very important they are non- alergenic, my girlfriend are allergic to cats, but his hair did nothing to her. That is great because they are very affectionate cats.

I knew he was going to be big but honestly I'm still surprised just how big he is compared to my other cats. He's practically the same size as my 11 year old tuxedo and almost as big as my half maine coon cat. He's a polydactyl as well so he looks like he has boxing gloves on at all times lol. I can't wait to see what he's going to look like in a few years.

I got this cute, little, gray, really fuzzy 8 week old kitten on Oct 17th. She was so small, I could fit her in palm of my hand. I named her GraySandra "Gracie" LeeAnn. 🐾
The first two days I had her, she was petrified.
The first day, I made a lean to with one of my throw pillows, that I was able to bend in half, and then put another throw pillow at one end. I managed to scoop her out from under my couch, and put her in there. She loved it. Wouldn't come out except to eat and go potty. She mostly slept.
The second night I had her, I was sitting in bed and had a bit of a meltdown thinking about my Mom, who had passed away on my birthday 4 years prior. I started crying, and Gracie had climbed up on the bed. I was amazed she was even able to get up on it because it sits so high off the ground. As I started crying more, she inched her way onto my lap and stared at me. When the first tears started rolling down my face, she jumped on my chest, started purring, rubbing her face against me, and then literally fell over on my chest like someone shot her. She just laid there purring until I stopped crying. 💞
Every night when I'd go to bed, she'd sleep on top of the pillows next to my head and I'd wake up with her sleeping in my long hair.
I was told she was a domestic cat, even by the vet, when I took her to get her 1st shots and spayed the end of Nov. She was three and a half months old and weighed 2.8 lbs.
Since then, her fur has been constantly changing. She's not gray anymore. She's tortoise shell.
She plays fetch with her mouse, her fishy, and her possum ... but mainly with her mouses. I'll throw them, she'll bring them right back to me, and drop them ... waiting for me to throw them again.
She loves to play with water as well. She'll be 5 months old on the 17th and she already weighs 5lbs. Her body length from the top her head to her tailbone is 18" long, and her tail is 10" long.
She has long ear hair tufts that jet out past her ears and long hair tufts in all her paw pads. She slides everywhere on my laminate floors.
I'm pretty sure she's an American Maine Coon ... possibly even a mix, but there's NO WAY she's just a domestic breed of cat.
I've had numerous cats throughout my life and have never encountered one as smart, and that gets so big, so fast. Her facial hair and body hair colors are continuously changing. She pounces on things, like a lynx or a bobcat, with her front paws spread apart, so she can keep her prey from escaping and scoop them in. She follows me EVERYWHERE. If I go pee, she goes pee. If I go poop, she wasn't to play in the sink in the water. If I'm washing dishes, she has to watch. If I'm preparing a meal, she has to watch. If I put something up, and she knows I don't want her in it, as soon as I think I have it safely secured, she has to show me how terribly wrong I am. 😏
If she gets her mouse stuck under a closed door, she'll make a trilling noise for me to rescue it. She also likes to put her mouse's in her water and bring them to me.
She knows what , "stop", "no", "get down", "you're being bratty", and "Oww! That hurts Mommy!" She used to claw and scratch me A LOT, until I had discussion with her explaining how it hurts and she's making my arms look like a junkie. Since then, she plays so gently, it's very rare I'll get a mark on me ... and if I do, it's usually by accident, because I didn't move fast enough ... lol.
Gracie is such a delight to have, even when she's being totally bratty ... which she does A LOT (she's a kitten)! I literally got her because I wanted an emotional support animal because I'm elderly, disabled, moved to a state where I know nobody, and I live alone. I was going nuts and starting to get depressed. I couldn't have picked out a better kitten than Gracie. She's my baby, my girl, my best friend. I thank God every day for her.

This was the SWEETEST story and my eyes actually teared when you explained why you got her at the end. I just love animals so much. Since I was born, I have always had dogs. When I turned 23, I got MY OWN first dog bc I had moved out after graduating college. He was a beagle/Brittany Spanial mix and was 8 weeks old. This was before I knew a lot about rescuing. I named him Buddy Guy and he became my best friend in the whole world. When I got divorced from my VERY toxic and abusive husband- Buddy was there for me. He followed me everywhere and just needed to be near me. Then I learned about adopting and I adopted a jack Russell/rat terrier mix- to be like a partner for Buddy. She was so sweet and the vet estimated to be around 1 year old. The shelter named her Penny bc she was found outside of a dollar tree. So I added "girl" and she became Penny Girl- so I had Buddy Guy and Penny Girl. They became the best of friends and were the absolute best friends I've ever had. Buddy Guy passed on December 17th of 2017 from kidney failure- he was 12. Penny Girl passed in May of 2018. One of the worst pains I've ever felt. It took me awhile, but I eventually adopted a new pup- he's a pit bull/Australian Kelpie mix (his mom was at the shelter too!) in 2019 and then just 3 weeks ago, I adopted a pure bred Blue Tick Coon Hound. They've helped me heal from the loss that almost kept me from loving another pet forever. I wanted to share my story with you, even though yours is about a cat- and mine a dog- I think we can both appreciate the love of our animals and how they're actually part of our families. If you've read this far- thank you. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I found that Louisiana hot sauce applied to cords and other things they nibble on. Usually works except with Lightfoot. Tiny Tiger had trouble judging where the water level was in the bowl and when she tried to drink she'd end up with a nose full of water. A ring from a milk jug in the water helped. As for the other naughty things eventually they grow out of them.

My niece has a Maine Coon (not pure breed), but I have become a big fan of this cat breed. Gentle, loyal cats and soooo soft and silky to pet.

Nothing comparable to MC. Superior in affection and intelligence and their loyalty is off the charts. I would recommend one to anyone, although don’t know how they are around kids.

    • @judithpearson3968
      @judithpearson3968 Před rokem +1

They are great with kids. The kids do need to be taught how to be gentle. They also need to be supervised at first to ensure they are gentle. And not pulling whiskers, ears and tail. etc.

We got lucky. Our Maine Coon was a lurker that showed up to watch my husband doing yardwork out back in the greenway space. He came & stayed so long we finally realized be disn't have a home. We tried to find his owner, but remained unclaimed, and didn't have a chip. He is loving with us, our other stray cat, and especially with our golden retriever. He is Very smart, funny, and getting bigger all the time (Vet said at first that he was likely only a year old) We weren't familiar with MC's, but he fits all the attributes we have since learned about them. I can't believe he let me out him in the laundry sink to bathe after he uh, brought me a partial mouse as a gift. He loved the bath! We feel very lucky !

@@lifewithmainecooncats what do you feed your Maine Coon? I want to make sure I’m choosing the best, the Royal Canin Maine Coon formula has grains/gluten and by product meal.. which I know isn’t the best to feed any animal food that’s got fillers and by product.. what do you/did you feed them when they were kittens, and what do you feed as adults?

Thank you so much for the information. I want another cat so bad. I had 7 cats. But I am starting to lose them due to old age. My oldest cat was 23 and now I have only 3 left. I have a 21 year old, and a 18 year old and a 10 year old. I do not believe my two old cats will be around much longer. My 10 year old is going to need a friend. She is very spunky. So I have been thinking about a Coon Kitten. I am 69 years old. And I have had lots of cats, Cats have always rocked my world!! Thank You Again.

Failed to mention, they are "cat dog"!!! Donit meow (no vocal cords) afraid of heights as they are horizontal cats, not vertical! (So my 4 yr old daughter was the only human to be allowed to carry him. [Not anyone taller]) he did learn tricks! Sit, stay, down, roll over, prairie dog, "horse face loaches" (he would come running to fish tank to chase them. 2 other cats...no interest). I miss him lot's! His personality was so diff from other kitties I've had, but got along with even my siamese! When we joined households...guess who was cuddling with the golden retrievers?
