Metaspeed Edge Paris vs Metaspeed Sky Paris

  • This is the Metaspeed Edge Paris, and it’s got the same foam, the same last, the same stack height, and the same drop as the Metaspeed Sky Paris. But these two shoes really couldn’t be more different. In this video, I'll go over the practical differences, and because most run specialty won't carry both the Metaspeed Edge Paris and Metaspeed Sky Paris, I'll go over some ways that you can figure out which of the two shoes you'll prefer (it's probably metaspeed sky Paris)

    I agree that ASICS marketing is too geeky for its own good. I demarcate the two based more on distance and speed. I think of Edge as being for shorter, faster efforts and Sky for longer, slower grinds. Trying both is really the only way to know for sure what works best for you. Definitely one to buy in-store after a treadmill trial or online from a store with a good return policy.

    • @Kaisersozze
      @Kaisersozze Před 2 měsíci +7

      Unfortunately I don't think a lot of people have the option to try both in store. If your comparison of the two is true then its definitely the most clear and logical out of all the reviews.

    • @jkhoudini
      @jkhoudini Před 2 měsíci +3

      It’s actually the opposite. Sky gets you more forefoot oriented and feels like it encourages you to put down more power vs edge is more smooth rolling for long haul.

    • @BigStar1972
      @BigStar1972 Před 2 měsíci +1

      My guess is Edge better for heel strikers, Sky better for mod/forefoot strikers. This roughly corresponds to the manner in which you add speed - do you have close to the same cadence at all paces and speed up mostly by taking longer strides or do you tend significantly increase your cadence as you speed up. I only take 158 spm at like 730/mile pace and closer to 180 at 5 min/mile pace.

    I actually find the Edge Paris more comfortable/softer so I think it will depend on your stride like Asics says. I think the Sky Paris depends on a long stride with a powerful forefoot strike basically and the Edge Paris is more of that classic rolling over supershoe feel. It's like the Alphafly v1 vs Vaporfly. They're definitely closer than they've ever been and the difference is the most subtle. Both shoes are absolutely the best they have been.

    • @adamfeerst2575
      @adamfeerst2575 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I agree in the distinction - Sky for powerful strike where you want to put yourself forward (not necessarily long), and Edge for the “classical” roll where you like the shoe to help push you forward.

  • @gtromble
    @gtromble Před 2 měsíci +33

    Elite marathoners run at paces that are faster
    than most people's 5K pace. Seems to me that when you run fast you're starting to experience what the shoe was designed for. The shoe doesn't know about effort, but does know about pace and biomechanics through how force is loaded through the shoe and the velocity at which the midsole compresses and rebounds. The idea that a marathon race shoe designed for elites would be good for a 10 min per mile runner just because both are exerting marathon effort doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying that you said exactly that, but you did talk about whether the shoe would be good for marathon effort and I don't think that can apply across the full range of runners.

    • @samuelryan4012
      @samuelryan4012 Před 2 měsíci +4

      It also fails to take into account that elite male marathoners weigh less than 120lbs, while many 'non-elite' runners weigh considerably more which impacts the dynamics of the foams and plates

    • @kofuzi
      @kofuzi  Před 2 měsíci +10

      My premise is the opposite. What you experience in shoes is relative to your effort. Otherwise, it is completely useless to have sponsored pro athletes unless you only intend to sell shoes to other 2:10 marathoners.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@kofuzi Agree. Otherwise everybody from sub elite downwards would not be wanting to wear these sort of shoes for their race efforts and the last 5 years might as well not have happened. Equally going very easy in racing shoes is rarely that great either.

    I watched many videos reviewing these two shoes, but none as complete and enlightening as yours! In a word: Excellent! I always really appreciate your comparison with similar models as this helps a lot to understand what the new model presented is like. In this case, your observation that the EDGE is firmer and the Sky is softer makes all the difference to me. I like firm shoes and I just hate soft midsoles. For this reason alone, my choice between the two is made. His choice of smaller routes for the Edge and the comparison with Adidas' excellent Takumi were also useful. Congratulations for your work!

    I imagine that the reason the Sky feels a lot softer is the late rocker. Since you already land pretty far forward you're landing a little bit into the rocker on the Edge. With the Paris you're landing on a lot more stack.

    Best practical explanation of the differences between the Sky & Edge shoe have seen in what 3 years of them now. Just pity they don't do either in a US 14 for me as my choice is easy - can't wear either! Before the default just seemed to be get the Sky as nobody really uses the Edge but sounds like they have at least got a more compelling choice this time. The cadence/stride thing, I always was a bit of a red herring as impossible to speed up without increasing both to a certain extent and then it is like asking if you are tall or short. Well a lot of runners are neither!

    @levandmarthapolyakin-aaron2183 Před 2 měsíci +13

    Your midfoot-forefoot vs midfoot-heel striker explanation is the most accessible I've encountered thus far. It enhances my very high cadence as another factor. I’m a midfoot striker based in my own and my coach's observation. Since the vast majority of runners touch down initially on the rear lateral edge before pronating (in a good, normal way) into their full footstrike I assume that doesn’t count as a heel strike. Even you, Kofuzi, have mentioned a few times that you show wear there on your outsoles and you’re a very obvious forefoot striker.

    • @mwailoon2111
      @mwailoon2111 Před 2 měsíci

      I sort of have the same 'issue' with the rear lateral initial touch down and material wearing off on the rear of outsole. Just gonna go with Kofuzi's opinion on Sky being more suitable for Marathon/longer slower paces. Booked and getting the pair tomorrow, exciting!

    • @laalaa99stl
      @laalaa99stl Před 2 měsíci +2

      Is he though? Every time Mr. Fuzi shows a gut shot on one of his 100 mile reviews, I don't see excessive wear at the forefoot. I think he's only a forefoot striker when the camera is rolling. That's what I think.

    • @MichaelJohnson2
      @MichaelJohnson2 Před 2 měsíci

      I wouldn't be surprised if the wear on rear lateral edge is from walking before/after runs, while making turns, or when going up/down hills. Could be anything really and shouldn't be worried about unless all wear was only coming from there.

    • @mwailoon2111
      @mwailoon2111 Před 2 měsíci

      From personal experience, the rubber sole itself does not show excessive wear even if one only strikes on that spot (unless the shoes has gone through seriously high mileage). It's the moment before the foot strike and the shoe 'catches' the jagged 'peaks' on the road surface that does the most damage. Like scrapping. @@laalaa99stl

    I don’t care about their marketing jargon. I look at how I strike the ground. I am flat footed supinator. I strike midfoot but the outer edge. I like how the Sky Paris has a wide and flared out platform for my footstrike. I have the Edge+ as well and it is an incredible 5k/10k racer. Insanely snappy. The more you push, the greater the response. I have my 10k PB on those shoes. The Sky+ is a great 21k/42k racer because it is so good at holding pace and you feel like you are barely putting any effort.

    Previously couldn’t decide between Sky+ and Edge+. I class myself as a cadence runner but reviews for Edge+ were that it was best up to half marathon so I decided on Sky+ for marathon. I then accidentally ordered the Edge+! Got the Sky+ too eventually and raced in Sky+ for NYC Marathon but have since found the Edge+ to be the fastest shoe I’ve ever ran in. Recently got HM PB of 75 running in Edge+ and I don’t find it hard at all, running 200spm. Ordered Edge Paris and will race London Marathon in this hoping for a PB also. I’m 63kgs and 178cm.

    I'm a triathlete, and I primarily participate in sprint triathlons, which consist of a 750m swim, followed by a 22k bike, and concluding with a 5k run. Due to the unique combination of events, I won't be running as fast as I would in a standard 5k race. As a mid-foot striker, I currently use the Metaspeed Sky + and enjoy it, it also makes me run faster than in a vaporfly for example, but it tends to make my calves burn during the run. I'm considering buying the metaspeed Paris, but I'm unsure if i should get the edge or the sky . Any recommendations for a mid-foot striker running a 5k like myself?

    I have heard the edge is a competitor to adidas adios pro 3. The edge heel area looks quite narrow (more like the adios pro 2) which was a little unstable, especially when cornering, though fine if your going to run in a straight line. Wondering how it compares to the pro 3. One thing that has also been mentioned by other pro 3 runners is that it takes a bit of break-in period the shoe and then you feel the true impact and "feel"of the shoe - I wonder if the edge will be the same...Also K did a PB in the sky so I take it that's what works for him best. Update: I just got the edge in the mail and my question was answered - the heel is narrower than the pro 3 and on par with the Takumi Sen 10. It's as if the pro 3 and Sen 10 had a child and this is what came out. I then wore one edge and one pro 3 (with about 30/40 miles on it). The edge was very stiff (like Kofuzi mentioned) and my pro 3 had "cushion". Question is, after the break-in time will the edge "feel" like the pro? Not sure since one uses a plate and the other energy rods. However, I'm not elite and not as fast as kofuzi and that's how the sky is marketed (plus I am
    more of a heel striker though I do run on the midsole though not as much) so who knows??...

    • @NateCrail

    Hi Mike, thanks for this compare. But looks I'm even more not sure which would be better for me. I'm fore to midfoot striker, and that original difference between SKy and Edge, was maybe good for elite runners. I'm used to increase both cadence and also stride length when racing or running at a race paces, 5K, 10K or HMP. I't not purely that I increase only cadence or only strides, it's both. Waht do you think is the most comparable to e.g. Vaporfly 2 or 3, Sky or Edge Paris? Thanks a lot. Peter from Slovakia

      I may be the first review you’ve watched/read that prefers the Sky. Primacy can sometimes be misleading.
      That being said, with the ways algorithms work, the reviews you have seen may be from reviewers who tend to prefer the same shoes you do (which causes you to watch them more and then the algorithm feeds them to you first).
      So primacy may be helpful in the age of algorithms. Or they can mislead us entirely.

Every 2 wks do 5k race and my pace slow compared to many at about 8min/mile. My race stride rate at 170 spm. And a bit of heel striker as this area first to show ware.
