The January 2024 transfer window was bizarrely quiet.
Premier League clubs spent just £100m, which was more than eight-times less than in the winter of 2023. Why?
Where have all the transfers gone?
Nick Miller writes, Philippe Fenner illustrates.

Pretty sure most of them are still at Chelsea
Here before this comment gets hundreds of likes
@@7starsBrowhat7654 😂😂😂😂
Nobody tell anybody that chelsea replaced an entire squad in 2 years. Would ruin the narrative.
Clubs don't think the only solution to their problems is buying another player.
They also think sacking the manager fixes everything.
It sometimes does 😂😂😂
I’m shocked with how reserved Chelsea has been this season, I expect their terrible spending habits were going to continue
Surprise... Chelsea don't have money because they spend it all.... Isn't money finite?
There are quite few reasons for it:
1) Most of this years budget was spent in summer already.
2) The reason why striker and GK were not fully addressed last year (only backup options basically) is, that there were no available option worth the money - so CFC is waiting for summer, when there should be some new ones available.
3) You need to offload some of the players to have space in the squad, which was hard this winter.
@@Talk3rsthey will def buy osimhen in the summer
@@OnnumMuttaiyumChelsea definitely have money they just can’t spend it without breaking ffp. Tbh they should do a Man City and sponsor themselves
They saving up for mbappe in summer 😂
Wolves winter transfers last season almost definitely saved them from Relegation.
Leicesters lack of transfers in fall last season probably got them relegated
@@bradm9068 The were 13th by January tf you're talking about
I hope this starts deflating transfers. Recent transfer spending has been crazy. Any first team player for a European team instantly costs around 80-100mil. That's what Cristiano went for a decade or so ago. It can't keep continuing surely
Dude look at Ibra costing Barca like 70mil in like 2007
Transfers will always go up this is normal
For all of Daniel Levy’s faults, he sure has kept Tottenham’s financials under control and there is no danger of financial ruin.
Also, no danger of winning titles
@@erdnasiul87 Kinda grim in a way that you have to resort to reckless spending fueled by Russian/Arab/American sugar daddies that take on the tab no matter what in order to win titles, isn't it?
It reminds me of pro cycling in the 1990s and 2000s where you basically had no other option but to use doping in order to be competitive. In that sense, one could even applaud Spurs for still being able to compete in the top 6 of the Premier League.
Levy’s transfers are also shrewd
Madders, Sarr, Bentancur and Bissouma have all been great and better than Caicedo alone
@@jdjphotographynl as portuguese and benfiquista I will be buzzing if english clubs had no money
@@erdnasiul87 Ajax fan here, and I'm not sure how I would feel about it. If English clubs really had to make do with what they can really afford to spend in order to stay profitable, we wouldn't have sold Antony to Man United for nearly 100 million. 🤣 And Benfica surely would have to settle with far smaller deals as well, even though both your and my club really depend on these transfers to keep the business afloat and be somewhat competitive in Europe. So if that money would fall away, then what will happen?
I'm rather surprised why no one, not even The Athletic or Tifo, has ever mentioned one important FFP rule adjustment made due to COVID that has now affected PL clubs, including the drop in spending during recent 2-3 windows. There was a huge allowance given especially for wage bill YoY increase, and I believe many clubs took advantage of this - some of them like Everton lost that gamble and are now paying for the price for it.
Perhaps clubs can look to their academies for breaking in young players more than simply filling gaps with expensive signings?
An approach brighton often employ, Slowly bringing signing/youth into the fold whilst also expecting offers to come in for their first team players, attempting to mitigate issues from the loss of a key player.
@@thehearingaidLiverpool have been doing that. They didn't sign another CB because they had Quansah and so many youth players have had breakthroughs
Video title reminds me of Jack Sparrow: Why is all the rum gone??!!
i love the voice of joe DEVINE
It’s great isn’t it? Especially compared to the American one. Actually listen to Tifo to help me sleep
I agree its amazing
Yes. He has a very listenable voice.
I think the Winter break that's added this year contributes to this as well, almost no games played in january means teams aren't gonna get caught up on panic buying because of huge run of losees etc.
a lot of teams only played 1 or 2 league matches in january and also have a lot of players not available due to international cups, excuses for possible bad form and no panic buying because of lack of games being played.
Also side note, If a team is in deep trouble they will make the gamble no matter what, but this year with a set of weak promotion teams meant no relegation threats right now for most non promoted team further decreases their motivation to make a purchase or loan. Too many compounding reasons and the financial struggles made a quiet transfer window an unanimous decision across all teams
Glasgow Rangers signed 3 players this window and last 2 games thise players collected MOTM awards
But the most important signing is the manager, i don't understand why they go for relatively small fees. They can transform the whole freaking team!😮
I know it's partly because clubs are being more sensible but also I think the prices for top players (which drag up prices for mid-level players, etc) are outlandish compared to the revenue most top clubs can generate.
9 figure amounts on a single player is insane - just takes one career ending tackle/injury, and can't get two or three players each year for that amount.
Why clubs are investing in their academies I imagine
Everton’s PSR breach has little to do with transfers and mostly comes down to the cost of building a football stadium during a pandemic. The addition of them in this video implies that they broke PSR due to transfers when that is simply not the case.
Whoever the animator is on this channel is a LEGEND! Keep it up
But some players fill in the gap that found after starting the tournament those make instant impact maybe for not long term
Ah, January 23th
Generally loan transfers for academy players, reserves and unsettled or underperforming players happen actively in January window
Honestly I hope this trend continues. Football transfers since Neymar to PSG have been nonsense.
Neymar was actually a very good transfer on paper
Almost transformative simply on its own
His injuries were the biggest issue
@@eesafredericks2122 To me no transfer can be seen as good if you are spending 222 million euros.
Don't forget Liverpool also signed Luis Diaz in January and he was a huge reason for the quadruple push that season
What Quadruple are you talking about
@Faker637 Quadruple push, push being the key word. You live under a rock that season? Made three finals, won one, and lost the Prem by one point
Brighton brought well this January, Barco for 8 million is an absolute bargin
Bayern could’ve used a few transfers
Palhinha was set to join like it was decided last summer, but I hear he signed a new contract at Fulham. The Bayern situation is grim now.
They are in Dier need of reinforcement
They signed Boey and Dier, more signings that PL teams media
You also have to consider that international tournaments slowed transfers as well. For example, rumors went around that Leverkusen were thinking of selling Hincapié, but upon losing tapsoba and another CB to AFCON, they kept Hincapié. A lot of last years transfer window was propelled by the World Cup too.
You also have to consider that it was mentioned in the video...
I think we all agree TIFO is trying their hardest not to soley blame Chelsea
All the football writers in January texting their contacts for the 40th time that morning.
"Come on man, are you sure you don't want a new challenge?! I gotta eat."
Please bring back the podcast
January transfers should mostly be loan deals for if you have a lot of injuries
Tifo misrepresenting Wolves’s summer window, not really a surprise since I doubt they care about non-big six sides and Newcastle (and maybe Leeds). Wolves sold a lot of players true, but the vast majority of them had barely played during the 2nd half of the season. The only two who were actual regulars were Neves and Nunes, who were sold for £100m combined and the funds reinvested. We didn’t “get rid of most of the squad”, we cleared out dead wood and hangers on from the Nuno days
Clubs facing relegation usually have a recruitment issue. Not surprised that would continue for january expenditure
Good to have the usual voice back. 😂
I hope the trend will reverse soon so clubs start spending less. The insane amounts of money coming in from media rights (yes, I am looking at you Premier League) have turned clubs into profit making machines and are straying away from what brought fans to the game in the first place: the beauty of the sport. It's getting more and more difficult and expensive to see your team live on the pitch and ironically same for seeing them on TV (or online). If the leagues put a cap on spending I think good quality football can make a comeback. The biggest proof of too much money harming a team can be seen at Man United - one of the most famous teams of the 2000' are now involved in endless struggles and many of their players became arrogant as a result of having outrageous wages leading to poor results. I hate seeing players being comfortable at a club and forgetting why they were brought in the first place.
Respect for fans in Germany fighting back against those "investors" looking to ruin an already unbalanced league. Hopefully Bayern's dominance is stopped this year because it's getting repetitive to see the same results every year.
Wolves made their January dealing last year and it was successful because they sirvived for another season. Many factors why most clubs were reserved in their spending. FFP, not many game changing players are available in the market and the three promoted side that are absolutely terrible. Plus Nottingham and Everton(got their points deduction reduced now) could face points deduction for breaching FFP. Manchester United just got their minority owners now, Newcastle had to sell players just to balance the books and City have enough star quality that they don't need to sign anyone in January.
I feel like high profile difference makers are too expensive if they can't promise club success
I completely forgot the winter window happened
well you to take outliers into consideration
clubs like chelsea alone affect the number of transfers in a period
they simply bought everyone then stopped, and then you made a video about it
The silhouettes of Ronaldo and Maguire in the end😂
if this trend kept on going, we may as well forget we have a winter mercato in football.
(Paula Cole voice) 🎶 Where have all the transfers gone?
De doo de doo de doo de doo
Nooo, my audio goes automatically to Mexican Spanish 🤣
Why would City and Newcastle not have any players in Africa or the Asian league?
Who are the owners?
600m of that were just spent by Chelsea if I am not wrong
or...also because PL clubs are already raiding most of europe dry of their best talent every summer and therefore clubs in other countries can no longer afford to sell a valuable player midway if they are to achieve their objectives
23th January, are you serious?
with “where’ve all the transers gone” i was hoping for some sort of mr Turnbulls epic piece
Kulusevski and Luis Diaz were also January transfers who were an instant and lasting success. What do they have in common? Liverpool and Spurs are sustainably run clubs.
What do all the foreign teams do if the English teams don't buy of them and buy in house. The big transfers apart from Mbappe and oshimen will probably be English teams buying Toney / Neto / Olise & talent of the relegated teams
23th of January? 😅
I guess they picked a date that was relevant for the January window - no point in talking about current positions if they're different to when decisions were being made
Video idea: how much does a Prem goal cost? Does it change per team. Do you score it by transfer paid? Wages? Money you make by staying in the Prem?
"it was more than eight times less than"
Guys, get a proof reader, what even is that sentence
What about Man City 115 charges????
Chelsea didn't buy anyone in January. instead they loan out 2 players. Maatsen & Broja
i think football became less popular this and last year, i myself was huge fan, but it became boring and i fell out of loop, no ads, notifications or commercials about it, my country channels dont show uefa and other stuff, so i forgot about it at all, kinda similar to rest i guess
FFP: let me introduce myself, unless you are Manchester City
We are in a healthy place in terms of PSR, yet david sullivan sells benrahma & fornals and doesn't sign a replacement.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who read the title like a Bonnie Tyler song
Everyone was saying that FFP should actually have teeth. Then it did. But because they got Everton first (who literally still broke the rules) now everyone hates it. Man City will come, don’t worry lads.
Here's the thing, even if City get a massive points deduction like Everton, they're gonna still make Europe, probably win a couple of cups too and go back to winning everything the next year.
Look at Everton, they got a points deduction but are well on their way to stay in the league. The only penalty they got was a drop from mid table to lower table which isn't worth much
City have 115 breaches. If even half of them are proved. They should get insta relegated.
@@09arunanaravaanan.a49Everton should have been relegated 2 seasons ago lol just about been hanging on
Man City won't get no penalties mate. Wishful thinking. They should get relegated by multiple divisions but they will barely get a slap on the fingers.
@@zuolat But the reality is that the 115 charges are actually just around 5 charges repeated over multiple seasons, so I suspect it will very much be an all-or-nothing thing (or at least most-or-nothing). They're not likely to have been giving dodgy sponsorships in some seasons, but not in others. They will have either done it for the whole period they're accused of, or not at all. The idea that because they've received so many charges, some of them must be true simply isn't the way these things work. If the charges aren't true for one year, they will almost certainly not be true for all of the other years too, and vice-versa.
Where has Tifo gone 😭
Just here for Joe’s soothing voice. It’s unfortunate he doesn’t have the condescending lilt in actual tifo vids
The 23th of January lads? Never heard of that
23th 1:29
Enzo = £105m
Mudryk = £62.5m
Madueke = £30m
Badiashile = £32.5m
Total = £230m. Where did Tifo pull this mysterious additional £40m from? Always seems to happen with Chelsea’s transfers. Extra 20% added by everyone to give it some spice
3 years of FPP Balance sheet will complete this season.
Now see this summer.
Most clubs started spending for next season..
Where are all the tifo videos are gone?
Thought the only solution to solve a problem to solve a problem in football was to sack the manager.
There has to come a point where transfer fees fall. I knoew people in football are stupid, but there is so much eviedence supporting there is no benefit in spending big money on 1 player most of the time. If teams would stop paying high transfer fees for mediocre players then clubs would stop charging so much.
Read the title as "Where have all the good men gone?"
Bro most of last years were Chelsea
How do Chelsea and man city keep getting away with this!!!!
It's like school someone gets reprimanded badly and for a week or a month everyone's is well behaved. AFTER that, well back to business
No no, you're wrong. I really do think that this time some hard, valuable lessons have been learned and....
PHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA, I'm sorry I couldn't keep it up, of course they'll be straight back at it first chance they get. All of them.
Wolves jan 2023 was possibly the best window we've had since promotion
pretty simple really there all concerned about ffp after everton got done for it
Hopefully Boehly realised his chucking money at everything wasn’t working and now only buys players Poch wants. Or then again….
Also, where have all the cowboys gone?
Where has Tifo IRL gone?
Because Chelsea stopped spending 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
one of my pet peeves: you can't have eight times less; you have one eighth as many.
Bro's trying really hard not to mention that Odegaard and Trossard were January signings.
Maybe clubs are getting smarter.
Chelsea Took all the Players 😂
Más tifo videos en español, se ingles... Pero nada como tu idioma materno 😅
Todd Bohley finally ran out of money and his partners had to reign him in. 😂 😂 😂
More to the point, where's TIFO IRL gone?
Was it bizzare? The game needs to get under control before it collapses under its own greed.
Games clearly corrupt and so much bias in the prem now. United again this weekend avoiding a red card and getting half the average added on time while 2-1 up. City and Chelsea escaping FFP while Everton and Forest look to suffer. It’s just embarrassing now. And I’ve gone of the premier league product because of it.
United have got plenty of calls against them
Basically the January window needs removing from the calendar, summer moves only and the window closes when the Premier League season kicks off.
You know the PL isn't the only league? Ipswich town got promoted on the back of last year's January window and our signings this January are on fire
@@glencurtis6052 doesnt matter, there should be no transfer window for any team mid-season
Talk about premier league team it fine, but as above said, what about others? Some just even start their season, and about this don't say just start the same with everyone.
More like where have all the videos gone? Am I right, JJ?
Everybody learning from real madrid
Everyone is afraid to say this, but there are no more good players to buy. Simple as that! Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo, KDB type.of players are no longer there. Just people who play good today and flop tomorrow. If something is not done, football will die.
Ah, the agents........
Interesting that ongoing investigations of City aren't mentioned...
That just Todd ran out of money
Too much research and data science in the game these days taking away the magic
Clubs: We have to avoid breaching FFP
Fake Manchester: breach what now?
FFP have real teeth
It’s good that the premier league stopped Destroying the Bundesliga or other leagues with less money?
People still don't realize that Boehly is American and will be tight gripped 😁 on future transfers
Reason for the 7+ year contracts and quick transfer spree 😂 😂 😂
FFP happened
Here in the first 30 minutes
“23th of January” 😂😂 tf is 23th
Sorry a deterrent city just keeps on spending hard it’s the pep way. But the prem has enough on them to kick them out of professional football. But they won’t because the government lawyers of city will just take the Orem and the fa to one of their courts and will just pay a tiny fine and laugh at the prem the fa and again at UEFA. These won’t talk about city as these are shitting themselves incase they end up in court. So embarrassing city now run football
Why pay exorbitant transfer fees? Just wait for their contracts to expire then sign them on free transfer.
That fool Satoru Gojo is going to lose!
