  • In this video we install the OEM short shifter in our MK7 GTI. This short shifter will result in a 10-15% reduction in shifter travel. Giving your MK7 GTI a shorter throw while still keeping your stock like shifter feel.

    Just an FYI for anyone installing this shifter - I installed this exact unit in my 2017 GTI. I followed this video step-by-step and the install was a breeze. Took all of 30 minutes being careful and taking my time. However, afterwards my GTI would not shift correctly. Reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th were all jacked up snd wouldn't go into gear easily at all. 2nd, 4th and 6th were fine though. A few minutes and a google search later I found this video: czcams.com/video/sheTKD03hmo/video.html and it saved my butt. Bottom line is that the new shifter has to be aligned. The video I mentioned is for an older model VW, but is still relevant to the MKVII as the mechanics are very similar. Once I found the video it only took me a few minutes to make the shifter right and it shifts awesome. Cheers!

    Hey great video Paul. This was my first mod to my 2006 Mkv GTI. The eu;ro oem short shifter tightened it up just right for me. I bought my GTI new and just started fixing it up at 125,000 miles. Your videos along with the Humble Mechanic have been a great help in saving me money on parts and labor, and learning more about my car in the process. Thanks! Kris

    Thank you for the video, I installed one for my 2008 GLI and everything went in and out pretty easy. The side to side arm featured a plastic clip to depress the arm back, but took some wiggling to snap back onto the new shifter. The front to back arm was straight forward and i just grabbed as far forward as I could on the arm. I just hand tightened the shifter bolt, then another 1/8 turn but nothing more. The shifts don't feel shorter but the stick shift is crisper with a heavier feel which cleans up the factory play.
    I put silicone grease on the ends that touch the side to side arm.
    I didnt have to adjust the shifter levers or after install.

    Two questions:
    1. Do you need to keep the end link that comes attached to the Audi shift lever? I would prefer to keep the stock link, if possible.
    2. Do you need to adjust the shifter assembly after this install? I know that the Dieselgeek short shift kit requires adjustment after install.
    Thanks Paul!

  • @ThomasHastings94

    Is there a reason you haven't carried out a shifter alignment? Locking out the gearbox and centring the gearstick prior to releasing the cable collars?

  • @garylee9240
    @garylee9240 Před 8 lety +1

    Is the MK7 stock shifter shorter than the MK5/6? Reason I ask is because on the MK5/6 this "S3" short shifter would claim to be 20% shorter. But on the MK7 it says its 10-15% shorter. I've always wondered if the MK7 actually had a shorter shifter than the MK5/6. I came from a MK5 and now have a MK7 GTI and it certainly feels much better but I don't remember how long the throws were.
    Keep doing these DIY videos. These are great!

    Paul why didn't you guys lock the shifter/tranny into service mode? Seems that part is vital to guarantee that there are no issues after the replacement? Additionally, I didn't see you guys mention anything about the endlinks and how its beneficial to replace the rubber/plastic items with metal ones. You should consider selling it as a kit and show a video how to do both. I plan on doing so here shortly and I'll show how both are done on a MK7 Golf R. Great video's as usual.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  Před 8 lety

      +Schwabo For this installing locking the shifter isn't really needed. We talked more about it on the metal cable bracket DIY. In regards to the end links we are working on them but dont have anything at this time.

      If you use a long attachment on your ratchet, put it on the bolt with the 13mm bit and tap the top of the extension with a hammer. Alternatively you could just hit the top of the 13mm if you don't the extension but be careful with it.
