  • The British Army tried fake fur, but it was useless. Wellington Barracks-based military tailor Jonathan Macintyre explains where the bearskin caps worn by guardsmen come from.

    Please can you tell me the name of the blue 'feathers' on the one side of some of bearskins ?

    • @Ikkyria
      @Ikkyria Před 2 lety

      The blue plume is the Irish Guards, one of the 5 regiments of the Royal guards. All five regiments are: The Grenadier Guards, which have a white plume, Scot Guards, which have no plume, Irish guards, Welsh Guards, which have a white and green plume and the Coldstream Guards, which have a red plume.

      Late reply but I’ll correct ye. 5 regiments of the household division each have something to represent their regiment on their uniform, they are never the same. The Irish Guards is St Patrick’s Blue. Grenadier Guards is a grey-ish, Scot’s guards have no plume either side, Welsh guards have a white green white, Coldstream guards have a dark red. Each regiment has the regimental logo on the collar, so the Irish Guards will have a shamrock instead of it. The Irish Guards have 2 groups of 4 buttons .

      Just to make sure if i understand correctly. These coloured plumes remain year in, year out to identify Guards easily. Love the simple Shamrock.. Counting bottons gets tricky😊

  • @yasmd

    They kill bears for this?

    • @jamesevans938
      @jamesevans938 Před rokem

      They don’t specifically kill bears so they can get the fur to make the hats but the fur is just a byproduct of a bear cull which is necessary in order to keep the population of black bear at around 900,000 which experts have identified as a healthy number so that the population doesn’t get to big that they begin to inhabit areas that humans inhabit and to keep other species of animals at a healthy while also providing economic benefits for rural communities which have limited economic opportunities so instead of the fur being wasted it’s sold to the companies that make the bearskin hats

      From what I understand..they have tried to go other routes instead of the actuall bear... But nothing to date has worked within the standards of what is desired. And since the bear population has to be managed.. then this is the trade off... Sad but it's understandable.

      the furs are sourced from bear reserves in Canada under strict laws and quantities are scarce; better than letting the natural product go to waste or producing synthetic furs through chemically intensive processes that don't do the job properly and harm the environment

      I believe PETA don't care much about bears these days, after losing several of their conservationist to bear attacks. Remember, they used to tied themselves to trees, and bears will eat them alive. Too bad they don't still practiced that anymore. I meant, tidings themselves to the trees.🤣

    Animal cruelty is not supported. Animal products used for irrelevency is not supported. If the products tried don't work then change the outfit. Bears are not in great number and culling should not even be considered.
