@@Hardrada88 My boonie hat wearing days only lasted a couple months...switched to the dew-rag. Would wear one when back at the firebase to fend off the sun. @maddogwillie1019 Not sure why anyone would sacrifice vision and risk that to look 'cool'..pinned up at the front looks cool enough and you can see hah. Some new generation infantry tacticool fad. My generation were practical infantrymen and never wore our boonie caps to look fadlicious and sexy. We wore them so we could see on patrol while giving us protection from weather and adding to our camouflage.
Make sure that the brim is cutting off ALL of your peripheral vision. Remember, if you don't know what you're doing, at least try to look cool doing it...
Its mean for dripping water off your head as far as I'm aware. Never had an issue with it "cutting off ALL" of my peripheral vision, a few 1SGT thing to say might I add, lemme make sure to wear my merils on patrol for you too firstsausage
In Danang early in the war (1963) the Marine NCOIC gave me a boonie that he had someone make from a shelter half. Green side cammo out, brown inside. Still have it but worn and faded as me.
To each there own. What I most agree with from this video is "Who cares?" I couldn't care less what someone thinks I look like when wearing a boonie. What I like most about them is how easy they are to stow in a pocket and how easy it is to shape them up to whatever activity I'm doing in the moment. Sometimes I want complete peripheral vision, other times I want more shade from the sun for my eyes. Stitching it up for a particular "look" just makes it less versatile. Who cares what the hell it looks like? Is it making you more effective in what you are doing?
One thing I did with my boonie, we wore them unauthorized on a particular deployment, was to remove the outer trim fabric on the brim, then cut the first bunch of material out, down to the first threaded stitching. Then, sewed that outer trim fabric back on. The Army likes their brims WAY too wide, lol. That made it a little trimmer, and looked better than the floppy issue one.
I promise you, most guys dont care how you wear it. You can wear it every which way, as long as you keep the sun off you. Ive seen my battalion XO with a comical large brim boonie cover. He stitched different boonie cover brims together
Tactical fashion is a thing now. In the 70's we worn bush covers, don't know went the proper slang went to boonie. After 10 days on an OP with only one c-rat can per day because water and radio batteries were more important , we were focused on keeping the radio up and calling in our air strikes. None of us were concerned about whether some lance corporal thought we looked fashionable in our chapeau.
I use a wire in all my boonies, it adjusts to all practical task you like. As long as you are not planning to put the hat into a pocket. But you can still cut the wire in half or several pieces to make it more storable. To me the boonie is used for purpose only - rain, sun, shadow, camo etc. I really like goretex boonies. And I renew the waterproofing with spray on all my canvas ones, every now and then.
I kept mine flat back in the day when I was in boat platoon. Also, the strap under the chin kept it on your head going through the surf, especially in Puerto Rico
I've been on six deployments and I never thought I would need a tutorial on how to wear a boonie hat! If you're biggest concern or worry is how you look wearing it than it's practical use, then you have one hell of an ego!

Closing the brim in and down on the sides impairs your peripheral vision. In addition it wipes out your overhead vision. You constantly have to reposition your head to see what is on your sides and see what is above you. You are overall limiting the field of view that you have. I have a few Boonies but I have them so I can see clearly ahead, to the sides and above. And I can easily use equipment like binoculars, rifle sights, cameras, etc. And I use goggles and a low hung Boonie gets in the way. I generally have the brim at the front up vertically directly across from side to side. It's away from the face so using goggles isn't a problem. Using a head Bandana is an option.
I love the look, metal gardening wire so you can bend and adjust it while you’re wearing it, and so it doesn’t blow up in the wind or while running.
