      Interesting! Did you/your guys ever trim down the brim at all? It mentioned something done like that in Gradys "Boocoo Dinky Dow: my vietnam war". How the b/ball caps were almost universally disliked. Was that only for SF guys or did others follow suit? :) forgive the questions, interested in learning this from an actual eyewitness and not some speculative 3rd party or article.
      I have a bush hat that I was given post training, more like those buckets that SADF and SAS are happy with and the brims tend to be cut down very tight to the crown. Common to find in Iraq. Fold up the front for that Confederate sharpshooter look 😅whilst keeping your neck and ears etc covered.
      I stitched a reflective panel in the top (reverse) with an IR patch as well so (if needed) punch inside out. Try and save from getting propelled into the next life by an eager bird thinking your bush meat. Thanks for your time sir! Appreciate it 🫡

      @@Hardrada88 My boonie hat wearing days only lasted a couple months...switched to the dew-rag. Would wear one when back at the firebase to fend off the sun. We have one E5 in our unit that wear a boonie hat pinned up in the front. He looked like a cavalry soldier from a movie. It was a hazard wearing anything on your head that blocked your vision, left right up or down. Walking in the jungle with the brim of a hat blocking your vision for shit above your head was sure-fire way of getting hit by a something like a swinging mace.

    • @Hardrada88
      @Hardrada88 Před 2 měsíci +4

      @maddogwillie1019 Not sure why anyone would sacrifice vision and risk that to look 'cool'..pinned up at the front looks cool enough and you can see hah. Similar to yourself though, they were only worn on base really especially the wide brim boonies. In SA we'd wear the shorter brim out in the bush though, think the idea was to break up a silhouette but it helped against the sun when you werent undercover. Anyway thanks for your reply, appreciate your time. Glad you made it home

    To each there own. What I most agree with from this video is "Who cares?" I couldn't care less what someone thinks I look like when wearing a boonie. What I like most about them is how easy they are to stow in a pocket and how easy it is to shape them up to whatever activity I'm doing in the moment. Sometimes I want complete peripheral vision, other times I want more shade from the sun for my eyes. Stitching it up for a particular "look" just makes it less versatile. Who cares what the hell it looks like? Is it making you more effective in what you are doing?

  • @oldsoldier181
    @oldsoldier181 Před měsícem +6

    One thing I did with my boonie, we wore them unauthorized on a particular deployment, was to remove the outer trim fabric on the brim, then cut the first bunch of material out, down to the first threaded stitching. Then, sewed that outer trim fabric back on. The Army likes their brims WAY too wide, lol. That made it a little trimmer, and looked better than the floppy issue one.

After 10 days on an OP with only one c-rat can per day because water and radio batteries were more important , we were focused on keeping the radio up and calling in our air strikes. None of us were concerned about whether some lance corporal thought we looked fashionable in our chapeau.

    I use a wire in all my boonies, it adjusts to all practical task you like. As long as you are not planning to put the hat into a pocket. But you can still cut the wire in half or several pieces to make it more storable. To me the boonie is used for purpose only - rain, sun, shadow, camo etc. I really like goretex boonies. And I renew the waterproofing with spray on all my canvas ones, every now and then.

    Closing the brim in and down on the sides impairs your peripheral vision. In addition it wipes out your overhead vision. You constantly have to reposition your head to see what is on your sides and see what is above you. You are overall limiting the field of view that you have. I have a few Boonies but I have them so I can see clearly ahead, to the sides and above. And I can easily use equipment like binoculars, rifle sights, cameras, etc. And I use goggles and a low hung Boonie gets in the way. I generally have the brim at the front up vertically directly across from side to side. It's away from the face so using goggles isn't a problem. Using a head Bandana is an option.

    Don't wear a boonie...they make a great target creating a deep shadow and very obvious sharp brim-line. Wear a banadana if going soft-hat. Kevlar is actually cooler than boonie as it allows air to circulate whereas the boonie has a tight seal around the head unless modified in some way.
