    Speaking as an ex-owner of a 2004 Passat PD130 4motion - they are an INCREDIBLE winter car, or even just a daily driver. Seats like arm chairs, 50 to the gallon, less than 1k to buy, and after an EGR delete, vac line simplification and a £30 Polish remap, it had a canny bit of punch behind it too 😂
    Never got stuck in the snow, on rubbish, knackered all season tyres, and never let me down at all.
    Phenomenal cars, I’d have another in a heartbeat if I did the mileage to warrant having a diesel!

      @danielmoore2475 Před 4 měsíci +6

      It's scary just how many people drive all year on summer tyres, and then wonder why they go pirouetting down the road as soon as temperatures hit 0 Celsius. We don't get bad snow or ice where I am, but plenty of rain, so I always fit good all seasons to every car I own.

    A winter "hack" for England would be to get a second set of wheels and winter tyres (preferably studded if permitted)...that's how we roll in Finland 😉

    • @ricequackers
      @ricequackers Před 4 měsíci +3

      Studded tyres aren't road legal here (and rather unnecessary anyway). But absolutely every car I saw up in Lapland had a set of studded Hakkapeliittas, and some also had rally-style lights for the long and deep winter darkness. I also noticed that Finnish trucks are absolutely massive beasts!

    Some have already pointed out that just getting winter tyres can do the job for most cars, especially and the question was "winter" and no "off roading" so even all wheel drive is less relevant than the rubber.
    However, if you want to go one step further: get winter tyres on a cheap Ford with the full winter packs. A 12 year old Fiesta probably has the heated windscreen (game changer), and if you get one with the headed seats too you're golden. Not sure they did a heated steering wheel back then but could look into that as well.

    chuckling at -24 C here for the "using coats at -6" =)
    Good (actual) hacks for winter btw, carpet or gravel in a bucket in the trunk. And a small shovel. way under 2000 but oh so worthy. Jump pack and tow straps too. Extra weight in trunk helps with RWD too. Also, low end torque over rpm's will help get you moving from standstill. and switching off your TC could actually help with acceleration, just be smart with your throttle then. And for every non car guy, practice your e-brake turns. might save your car some day on slippery roads. Just dont go practicing it on public roads... thats an easy way to lose a car. trust me. I paid that price when i was a new driver 20 yrs ago...
    Some more experienced winter driver may want to add to the list. these were just off the top of my head.
    For a winter hack (car). Old Saab or Volvo. With turbo. Warm, safe, reliable and made for the winter. Never had issues with a front wheel drive even here in Finland. Well, never had issues that 4 wheel drive would have solved. Would prolly have just made things worse... saying goes "4 wheel drive will just get you stuck further in deep snow".

    Most propane heaters produce a lot of carbon monoxide gas and in an enclosed space can be lethal.

    Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo first gen with winter tyres. Super lightweight, will actually stop on snow, unlike those 2+ ton vehicles you're talking about!

    I've owned my 2007 Audi A6 3.0 TDi Avant (obviously Quattro!) since 2009: 235,000 faultless miles through all weathers, carrying and towing all manners of stuff (and two dogs!). I have other weekend 'toys' which I keep chopping and changing, but will just keep the old Audi till it dies...... IF it ever dies! Oh, and just a little fact to get you thinking - the gearbox as we all know, is stated 'sealed for life'........ and I took the risk of leaving it that way. I started getting worried when I crossed the 100k mark, reading all the stories from 'experts' on the internet, but I thought I'd leave it for a bit longer to decide. Then 150k miles came and went, then 200k miles came and went, and as the gearbox (complete with pointless paddle shifter!) is still as smooth as the day I bought it (and the fact the car is now worth about the same price as a Mars bar), at 235k miles on the clock...... the gearbox will remain untouched!! Great work lads as ever (and always a bonus seeing Maisie!).

    I love when Maisey(sp) casually wanders into the shot and nobody bats an eyelid, you know she's well treated and nobody is shouting at her to get down. People who treat dogs well are generally good people and car people are generally good people, combine both and what do you get.... very good people 😃
