James Taylor and Carly Simon discuss his drug habit on Dick Cavett's show in 1977. After spending his early career addicted to heroin, James Taylor gave up all drugs in 1984, and has remained clean and sober.
The power of this interview is the realization that, despite James’ insights, he did not give up drugs for another seven long years.
doesnt really make the interview more powerful. Speaks to drugs power and the fear of oneself intimacy
My thought exactly. So, 25 years.
Its a long road. Atleast by 1977 he knew it and started to get of the junk.
@@johnSmith-yn7dg Not a long road for everyone. People who don't have the good fortune of being "discovered" by Apple Records look at the reality of that hard road and decide they don't have the luxury to waste in excess for years.
Some people do more with less; the intelligent ones, anyway.
Yes, unfortunately that's why it's addiction. A large part of you doesn't want to take that next drink or even light up that next cigarette, but then you wind up doing it anyway. It's partly a chemical addiction and dependence, but it's also an addiction to habits. Smoking becomes a habit and the habit of smoking - apart from how addicting nicotine is - is a hard thing to break. I quit smoking 13 years ago and still cach myself putting two fingers across my lips when I'm driving, like I'm going to take a drag on a Camel cigarette.
Later on in life, James Taylor, (clean), said that doing drugs was like living the same day over & over again for 18 years & never realizing that all that time had passed.
It can pause you like that
Just like covid then.
Just like 9 to 5 then.
How Accurate....SO TRUE
Any addiction or unconscious choice has a similar numbing or automaton effect.
She totally nailed it about one of the reasons for drug use. I just finished reading her book. A class act.
But, but what if she partially nailed it. ;o)
Don’t you mean Class A act ? LOL!!!
@Joe M why did you start drinking?
That was deep.
Try hiding from yourself on acid. Good luck.
Carly really described the problem with drugs. Her explanation made more sense to me than someone just saying "Don't do drugs".
What did she describe exactly maybe I’m missing it. She seemed to just ramble a little about how drugs make u more comfortable around your friends. Which they do but that’s about all they do. It’s a myth that whole creativity thing. Creative ppl tend to take drugs drugs don’t make ya creative. That’s all James was saying.
Yes, but what I think they are not saying is that unfortunately drugs are also lingua franca in certain circles, meaning you will not be accepted if you don’t do what others do. Terrible for young and vulnerable seeking to find friends and soulmates.
@@solobano570 I know it sounds cliche and all but to any teenager out there, believe me, a real soulmate ain’t going to be someone you meet at a junkie circle or a dead end bar
G.Z. - True, but teens will find drugs easily working as busboys in restaurants (drugs are rampant among cooks and waiters, incl in high establishments). I am not even going into the world of music and arts and high pressure jobs. Teens like to imitate and belong. Drugs are everywhere. By the time they find out that drug mates are probably not their true soulmates, it may be too late. It would be much better if there are pubs and bars where kids 18+ could meet and have few naughty beers rather than have them confined to house basements where they are popping pills while playing mind numbing video games. Actually bars would benefit everyone psychologically in those sad suburbs. Nothing is more relaxing than few drinks, laughs and opportunities to meet new interesting characters. For any age.
@@lt.finglefubledingler1972 What she said was ... Don't do drugs.
Thank you James and Carly for being so honest
Carly is brilliant to word it that way. Drugs don't set you free, they limit you, your potential, and your ability to appreciate the beauty of human to human connections.
The Bratty Tarot very true, there is a time and place for medicine.
I heard what she said and she is truly creative and intelligent
@Konservative Kirby II shut your dumb ass up
@Konservative Kirby II lol ok well be a junkie then what do I care
You just need to find some better drugs.
The HONESTY of human connection, not BEAUTY. Words matter.
So true Carly!! I absolutely used drugs in order to be more comfortable and outgoing! I met my first boyfriend at a dance hall. He was adorable and I never would have had the nerve to talk to him without using alcohol first. It started me down a dangerous path where I actually overdosed and was pronounced dead but God brought me back!
So much time wasted in my teens and early 20s with drugs. I totally feel him on that. Looking back some people say oh I had the best time. I look back with regret That I could have used that time to better myself. Live and learn.
Well, you survived and there is still time to learn and enjoy. But, the sad thing is that young people don’t appreaciate the intellectual and physical potential they have. Too bad if it gets wasted on drugs. The age takes its toll and the natural abilities weaken even without drugs.
Don't worry about it, you have the rest of eternity
I spent 22 years drinking and I'm glad and thankful that I left that shit behind.
Today will be a great day.
I think what Carly Simon said about it being valuable to feel tense with your friends is important. One realization for me is that if you always have to be drinking when around a certain group of people and you can't enjoy yourself otherwise, then its likely that they aren't your real friends.
Carly Simon is an exceptional brilliant and lovely person,,,much underestimated, and not given the credence, love, and appreciation she deserves.....
Absolutely and also one hell of a voice
Wth are you talking about she's a millionaire and worshiped by millions of people all over the world as an icon of music how much more appreciated does it get sheesh .
Read her autobiography. She is an odd person with a good voice.
Oh yeah? Please tell us how Carly Simon is brilliant.
Wonderful guyz
What a beautiful, amazing sweetheart of a woman Carly is. She was my go to female voice of the 70s and beyond. Remember her photo on the cover of Hotcakes, when she was pregnant? Never seen such a glowingly lovely, happy mother to be. Bless her forever with everything she needs to be joyful.
I never knew that James Taylor overcame drugs . His music has always been very special to me and had a way of calming me down if I was down . My first love recently died of a heroin overdose I kept telling him if he didn’t stop he was gonna die . He said that nothing felt better to him then the drugs . He ultimately lost his life in June . He has done them his whole life . The drugs took everything from him in the end . I’m so glad James Taylor didn’t let the drugs win .
Taylor was back on HEROIN. That’s how he left Simon
Great interview. Anyone know what James was saying when Carly started to speak, and he was motioning towards himself with his arms? Just curious...
@@aekelly It looked like he was saying "its about me". He did not seem to want to share the spotlight with Carly. That one gesture may have shown one of the main problems in their marriage. It was all about him, not about her and their kids. He was not ready to be a husband or a father, obviously. And he kept on doing the drugs after this interview, despite Carly pleading with him to stop....
@@belindaintexas8789 yeah he has said in recent interviews that he had no business getting married back then. That he wasn't mature enough.
James Taylor actually touched my heart with what he's saying in the video.
I just stumbled across this interview -- These are two of my favorite artists/singers/songwriters of all time. The talent between the two of them! Incredible. I dont know why the marriage didnt work - but I'm glad that JT kicked his habit and is still with us in 2020!
Have you checked out their sons music? Ben Taylor's first 2 albums are excellent.
That is a miracle.
The 'marriage' didn't work because he was banging every girl that moved and she was doing the same with every guy that showed her attention. Duh.
We were experimenting a lot. With sex, politics, drugs, jobs, life styles, intimacy, all of it. We made mistakes, we changed and grew, sometimes we found ourselves, sometimes we lost ourselves. We found each other and loved freely, not always well. Carly and James were two of our icons, their songs and so many others became themes in our lives, to dance to, to live by. The civil rights movement, women's liberation, ending the Vietnam War, sex and drugs and rock 'n roll. So much that was hopeful and joyful, so much that was painful and disillusioning. I am very very glad to have lived through it the way I did. And to have folks like James Taylor and Carly Simon entertain and lead the way was a blessing beyone measure.
May 25 th. will be 33 years of being clean. I totally agree with James Taylor! Drugs are total flipping garbage! Just lost a great friend to drugs the other day. He was a kind man who always helped other people! RIP BIG JOE!!
I have been clean from heroine for 40 years now.
Drugs gat me closer to the spiritual meanings of life than sobriety ever has. I do not regret my drug experience. I learned a great deal. I choose to be sober because of all I learned from drugs.
Wouldn’t a great literature or philosophy do that?
Solo Bano read philosophy and fine art at grad school. I found drugs expanded book learning. However, at 70 I still read.
@@wendyknoxleet that's pretty deep. I know what you're saying. I got similar comments from people who were totally ignorant of rock climbing, all of them saying climbers have a death wish. they couldn't be more wrong. its a life wish. you're experiencing a lot more life and beauty than most. you educate yourself and learn how to use the ropes and the gear for protection. standing in a ledge 500 feet up a cliff and watching a 50 yard wide sheet of lightning explode about 400 yards in front of me, I was sure that I had experienced more by my mid 40s than most will in their lifetimes. there's no argument the highly addictive ones can destroy your life. but I've seen more widespread problems with alcohol in our society.
@@solobano570 possibly, but not necessarily. isxm reading about a place the same as going there? close, but there are things that don't translate, such as scale. Ever BEEN to Yosemite? its one thing to look at the picture from the turnout below inspiration point, but you'll have absolutely no sense of just how massive the walks of El Capitan really are until you stand below it, and even then you need to really look at it. next time you see that picture, look at it very closely. see the fuzzy edges on the top of El Cap? Those are trees on the valley rim. probably around 100' tall. Now scale that down and estimate how small if a spec a man would be. That wall is a mile high, as in 5,000 ft.
Steven Tyler had a great point too
Hahaha 😂
lmao that cracked me up thanks
I was thinking Mick Jagger before I scrolled to the comments... but yeah you’re right. It’s like an exact 50/50 of Steven and Mick. Good shit. 😂
You apologize to Steven Tyler. Lol
There’s a third person with a wide grille-financial guy Ken Fisher
What they're saying makes so much sense. Being afraid of intimacy with others or getting to know your real self can be frightening, but definitely not as frightening as being a drug addict. I'm including alcohol as a drug. Once that begins to be #1 in your day, every day, you're really in trouble. I never thought I'd be happy being sober, but I am. No longer living in fear. No longer dreading the morning sunlight. There is hope for everyone who seeks help and recovery.
Carly Simon's body language is saying, "I bet you think this song is about you".
😝
Even with all this knowledge he still used for 7 more years after this. Goes to show how deep it can get the hooks get in you.
Has nothing to do with knowledge, intelligence, etc.! It's an addiction. Hard to understand unless you've experienced it. And I hope you never do! ;-)
@@julierood1228 thank you for the sentiment! it hasn't something to do with knowledge doesn't it? Meaning learning about the disease is one of the first steps in recovery? Clearly though it's not everything.
I have known and seen physicians die by way of opioid OD, and they knew, has to be hell to know it is going to kill you and wanting it bad, reminds of my ex
Yep that definitely rings true here. Apart from a few mushroom trips and weed for the first six months I smoked it, the 20 odd years I messed around with drugs were a total misuse of my time and life. Luckily I woke up and now enjoy life for real and actually remember my experiences.
Love James Taylor and his work and always really respected the way he put all that stuff behind him and managed to move on and lead a clean life. I reckon that took a lot of strength. Mind and body.
James, you were great onstage in 73 and you're great now. You, Carly and Dick are all spot on in this little snip of tape.
We will always be your fans James no matter what you did! Im glad you quit drugs too
Even though it wasn’t his end of use, it did end and shows a productive life can happen. It ultimately is a choice over choosing addiction. Being addicted IS a choice, not just a disease.
Blue Skies -I worked as a detox and drug counselor. Many lessons learned, but personal responsibility is key. Be well
The drugs really screwed James up, he was admitted to McLean Hospital for mental health issues. He and Carly have not talked in decades, even though they have two kids together, too bad.
Good for James to speak out on drug abuse. He's such a talent - never needed drugs.
Bravo for both of them for being frank and personal and honest. No doubt, it’s helped JT become one of the great songwriter/singers of all time.
I abandoned drugs & alcohol in 1984 as well. No regrets.

I'm not sure it would have worked on me, but goddamn I wish I'd seen this when it aired. Worth a million anti drug commercials
Wonderful. First time I've seen this interview. They were a beautiful couple.
Yeah, I knew James was off when I worked his Boston Commons gig as an usher in the summer of 1983. There was a wicked edge on him that just didn't match the musician I knew from his songs - a resistance to showing his vulnerability and to relating with his audience. Darkest before dawn - ya know? Glad it's all history now. Not an easy thing kicking heroin (or crack for that matter). Maybe one of the hardest things ever.
Carly divorced James 4 years later. Turns out James was married to the heroin.
I love this man so much. His speaking voice sounds just like his seeing voice! That’s really rare! 🙏💕🙏☮️👍🏻😎⭐️😘😊

One of my daughters had a heroin addiction and I lost her for 3 years in a rehab. She is cured now and has 2 wonderful kids. She had a poor school time and no good friends. My other daughter had great, steady school time and some really good close friends. She is clean. For me, A Good Strong Friend circle will help a child to a better future. I hope your children get good, solid friends.
She is not cured. Once an addict always an addict. She has arrested it.
Space Ghost. So out of the whole of my reply you pick out the word ‘cured’ and criticise my interpretation of its meaning in regard to an addiction? The main point of my comment was of the importance of having good friends when young. Do you take delight in going over comments to find any you can critique? Ok, so maybe she’s not cured but she’s been drug free for many years. Why go out of your way to try and bring a stranger down by belittling an achievement of his daughter. Does stuff like this make you happy?
@@davidmitchell1959 Relax dude. I'm on your side. I am an addict and alcoholic who has been clean since 1992. My correction was not meant to be a jab at you. It was to educate others reading. In recovery the word cured is NEVER EVER used. Didn't mean any offense.
Space Ghost. Mate, your comment just dented my pride in her a bit and I struggle with negativity regarding her. Our whole Family went through hell during those long tears and my haste in writing my comment took over my need to proof read it so accurately. Keep up the good work Man. Too many don’t get through stuff like this.
I don't regret using drugs. It taught me what kind of person I don't want to be. And to me, that was a valuable life lesson.
Absolutely
Dick Cavett is a treasure. I've enjoyed the insights of so many of his interviews!
1:15 What did he mean making that gesture?
I wish he’d taken his own advice. Sobriety for still seven years down the road, for him. * why do we never hear what an enormous help Paul McCartney was, to James Taylor, personally & professionally? Credit, where credit is due.
You get clean yourself. No one does it for you.
@@spaceghost8995, that's not really true. I have so many people who showed me the way and held on to me when I wanted to run back to what was my norm. The people who believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself will always be in my heart. I can never repay them.
Realising that your friends are in the business of supplying also helps. They aren't doing you any favours about awakening your consciousness or opening doorways, they're moving product for profit.
Insightful words from Carly. Another interpersonal thing that happens when you're high on drugs is that it removes psychological boundaries. That can seem like fun at the time, but it takes its toll in the long run. Those boundaries are there to protect you from predatory wolves. It took me years to rebuild them after I stopped doing drugs - mainly molly, but LSD, mushrooms and plenty of hashish as well.
booze is a drug too. Carly nailed it!
I know someone who was (and still might be) a heroin addict. He reminds me so much of James Taylor then. Totally self-absorbed and I am happy that James was able to kick this horrible habit. He seems like he is living a good life now. Perhaps his refusal to see Carly now is because he is afraid to face her without drugs. It's our fantasy for them. Love both of them as singers, "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" still absolutely haunts me 52 years later.
I adore Carly as she keeps me stable!
Quite an honorable and honest thing to say on national TV way back when.
And what Carly says also makes a lot of sense.
Well they say drugs as if their all the same. I consider alcohol a drug and some have huge problems with it while others enjoy a glass of wine with a meal or with friends. Theirs a big difference between heroin and marijuana, their just totally different in every way. I don’t think marijuana for the vast majority of the people who enjoy it addictive at all and I’ve never had any problems with it.
Carly Simon is an exceptional person

I think you got it exactly right. I can imagine how upset she must have been feeling by this point ... and poor James is still all wrapped up in himself. I've found it gut wrenching to watch the two of them sing "You can close your eyes" together. She looks at him with such devotion, while he remains wrapped up in himself. He seems much happier now with his present day wife.
I think the reason why he has absolutely NO relationship with his first wife anymore, is because he associates that time which such shame, that he had to just walk from everything at that time period completely and never look back. He is just Too Ashamed.
I wasted 27 yrs doing drugs , i would like to tell any young person to not even think about taking hard drugs of any kind ! Because you have no idea the living hell your life will become , and even if you eventually get clean , you are permanently diminished to some degree depending on how long you were abusing. ....peace.
So....... It really WAS him who walked into the party like he was walking onto a yacht!
In my twenties, me and my small group of friends, spent every free moment trying to find weed. "Who can we call? Does he have some?" Wasting so much time and money, only to waste more time. At 50yo weed makes me lose the thing that I find in my left hand.

i appreciate James Taylor's openness on drug abuse which i agree is time wasted only if it's not too late you learn come away free from it
most musicians and artists, people with talent, learn their craft sober, they work hard at it and become good, it's when you get lucky, get some notoriety that the trouble starts, many bands back in their days were literally fed drugs, were made available for them by record companies and the like... the myth is drugs make you more creative, not really, the creative part comes from all the hard work you did to get there, alcohol is even more destructive, more addictive. maybe some light recreational stuff just to loosen up once in a while, but people start to think they need to be high to perform, stage fright can be debilitating, can literally keep an artist from being an artist... the drugs become a crutch, and before long, destructive.
carly makes a good point about friendship and being able to connect, it's the same thing with performing, you can't really get good at it if you have to get lit up just to be able to do it, you have to learn how to do it sober, overcome your fears, and develop as a person.
100% accurate
I am sorry but it is hard to forgive James Taylor for the way he has treated Carly Simon. To my understanding, he refuses to contact her or talk about her in any way ... wiped her out of his life and ignored her for many many decades. All she wanted was for him to kick his habit and try to help her take care of their kids.
There is how it appears from the outside and there is what actually happens between two people that we can know almost nothing of. He may have valid reasons for not wanting contact that we will never know, because it's private.
@@chelseapoet3664 Actually these are two very public people who we know a lot about. The fact that James continues to ghost Carly Simon is unacceptable. He himself has said he was an unfit father. Read her autobiography. It might help you understand.

Taylor has spent most of his life clean and sober. His drug addition, while horrible for him and those who loved him, is in his past. So much more defines him than his addiction. It may be time to move on from this topic.

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Yet alcohol and cigarettes are pushed so hard.. yet are the most damaging
Right, but not more damaging than "heroin" which is what they are actually referring to. Something like Cannabis, which is medically beneficial and 100% non-lethal is certainly safer than cigarettes which kill 435,000 people a year or alcohol which kills 85,000 people a year. Throughout all of recorded history no one has ever died from cannabis. You might say to yourself, "Why would they outlaw a plant which is harmless for adults to use recreationally and has thousands of health benefits?" you might also say, "For a class one narcotic by law that is on the same level as Heroin why do they say that it itself is harmless but "May lead to harder drugs"? Seems a bit odd to me.
@Max Ruten It's harmless for adults to use, and I don't know anyone but successful professionals who enjoy it. Facts are facts and your personal opinion and limited view of people are of no importance.

Is that why Carly left him? Oh No, I was told Carly had a huge coke addiciton in the 70s and 80s. I am surprised that a guy who made such mellow music as James Taylor was a junkie. My sister met him on the street once in the 80s and she wanted to know where a record store was. He told her. She didnt let him know she knew he was but said he was very nice.
I just read Boys in the Trees, and my understanding is that it was either the drugs or her, and James chose the drugs.
you know, as an addict myself, i find myself feeling two ways, one wants to keep using the stuff because its just such a powerful feeling of relief (heroin), yet at the same time, i really dont like it because its not something that you can just use moderately, you cant just put it away or stop using, it literally takes over your bodys natural endorphin-producing process, and when it does do that, and it will, your body/brain goes apeshit (withdrawl) unless you keep consuming more heroin, and its a never ending run on a hamster wheel, its a trap.
GOOGLE GET IT STRAIGHT RIGHT NOW YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT I SAY
SPAC3MANxSPL1FF sounds fucker up
It's an interesting dynamic for sure. Like James said, 'it's a dead end', yet you keep thinking it's the light at the end of the tunnel. It is a trap. There is no in between. When you go back it's 'all in' every time, and you simply cannot moderate it. Most can't, anyway. Truth is, "it" wants you dead. Or at least, useless. Deep down I think we all desire internally for what I believe Heaven brings -- a real sense of peace and euphoria, but we consume and pursue that in so many wrong and harmful ways. Yet there is no substitute for the real thing. And on this side of Heaven it can only be found in part, and in intervals. We yearn for what waits on the other side -- we were created for that purpose. Jesus has been my rock through it all. As much as I have failed, He will never let me go. I hope you stay strong brother!

Glad James Taylor didn't ruin his life drugs and let his talent go to waste. He couldn't have asked for a better woman than Carly.
He never appreciated her, even now they don’t talk to one another. He let the best thing to ever happen to him, go away.....because he pushed her out of his life. Really sad.
Foxxxy &Sassy What is so sad to me, is that after they divorced they did have a period of time when they were fine with each other… They even performed together a few times. Who knows what happened in the intervening years, Carly says she has no idea why he wont talk to her. I personally think that his current wife is incredibly jealous of Carly. He has made public remarks that are so silly… Like talking about the beautiful song he wrote for Carly “there we are” in which the lyrics say ‘Carly I do love you.’ He says he now performs it and replaces Carly‘s name with his wife’s name, because it’s meaning has changed. How do you just change the lyrics of a song that’s been around for decades? He put out a family video during quarantine where his two sons and his wife are singing ‘close your eyes’.... his kids obviously have some of his talent, but his wife has a very pedestrian voice. Seemed like she just wanted to be linked to that song with James since there is a video of James and Carly famously singing it.
I heard it said recently about drinking to morn the loss for another that it really robs robs u of pain u should be allowing yourself to feel. that's incredible how many people haven't been there, but they "know". How dare anyone pretend to know each person's thoughts. people are so vastly different. two siblings coujd experience the same tragedy - say a parent dies. while that might destroy one's life, ut may be the motivation that makes another pick themselves up and make something of themselves. and you're going to pretend to tell us you know what each will do, right?

Carly also stated that she preferred James Taylor to be drunk or stoned as he relaxed and appeared more open and affectionate. They were too young and immature to marry. Sad and painful mistake on the path to growing up.

Come on folks! I’m a big fan of Carly Simon and there are times when she looks amazing, but this interview was not one of those times and LogicalNotes’ comment will be funny to you too once you remove the large sticks from your orifices.
They are probably closely related. All the world's a stage.
Carly's body language says it all.
Shes pissed
She's actually orientating herself TOWARDS him and way from Dick, so she can see him/listen/be his audience...
Peace and contentment...joy even...to everyone. Allow yourself to feel the peace. You'd want the same for anyone else, yes? Give it to yourself. :)
This interview is 1977. At the end it says he gave up drugs completely in 1984? Seven more years after saying all this?
Lol
acknowledging a problem and fixing a problem are two different things
Perhaps he relapsed. I’ve been in AA for 7 years, but I’ve relapsed several time’s, thankfully for not long!! One day at a time, keep (going) back!!!
@@suesjoy .......fair enough. Good luck to you.
I get knocked down
But I get up again
Ain't nothing gonna keep me down
Well sure, he was on heroin FS. That's not like smoking a number with buds and kicking back talking and having a few laughs. I don't think addictive people understand the rest of us aren't serious about recreational use. It's recreation. Not often. It's not a lifestyle. And Carly thinks you can find out more about each other sober? Sure. But you can find out a lot from how people behave when they think they have license to act just any way they want as well. Drugs aren't an excuse or an out for bad behavior. I've found out plenty about myself and others while not so sober. I'm a pretty good dude. My friends are too. I've been married for 36 years. Taylor and Simon only lasted nine. They both sang good. That's all. I'll trust my own judgement thanks.
We understand dude, it's just that they're not talking about you. I don't think non-addictive people (if there even is such a thing) understand just how much us addictive folk need good advice and good role models in our lives. We need to be reminded regularly to stop trying to get high because it's dangerous for us. If you don't need the advice, don't take the fucking advice. But what you're arguing against is something that could save lives. Don't take that away from people just because you feel like you've got your shit together. You being reassured that it's okay to get wasted is NO WHERE NEAR as important as it is for people like us to be reassured that it's okay to be sober. "Go get high, it'll be fine, it's okay, you won't go too far, self control is easy" you are the devil on our shoulder and a cancer in our lives. Go die in a fire you selfish cunt!
I like what Carly had to say more.
Yes. I didn't even understand James.
Her body language in this. Seems exhausted by it all.
I was watching something the other day about Carly and it talked about how she used to stammer/stutter when talking as a child, but her mother discovered that she didn't do it when she was singing. So she started "singing talking" to remedy the speech problem....and eventually grew out of it as she got older. I've noticed when watching these old clips of her at a still relatively young age that she did still show occasional evidence of the speech problem. It comes across as more of a nervousness (repeating of words) when talking than it does a speech problem. But I don't notice the problem at all on clips of her after she was well into adulthood.
I just noticed it on most of her covers of standards..ea one was no comparison to her delivery on original songs.
Her body language says it all
She's actually orientating herself TOWARDS him and way from Dick, so she can see him/listen/be his audience...
But, those people around you doing the same drugs aren't your friends. I found that out the hard way...
You can tell that Carly Simon adored James Taylor. It must have been terribly lonely for her to realize that she was on her own with two small children while he was in love with drugs... Yes I am sure he is sorry to have a reputation for drug abuse. But that is nothing compared to abandoning your family. I still love his music and am glad he has done better by his second family. ...
I love James Taylor’s music but I don’t subscribe to his lifestyle. I’m 69 now and I was 15 yrs old when JT rose to fame. I came out of the turbulent 70s and 80s unscathed. Thanks to Mom and Dad for their enduring guidance.
Drugs do set you free - if you do them only once or twice and in careful doses and circumstances. The problem is, we often have very enjoyable experiences during our first several uses and start to make a habit of using them (even if at first the habit is once a month or once a week - habits can start slow). Before we know it, we are abusing them and they are abusing us. Addiction is like having an abusive lover in some ways. She comforts you and then she beats you up and tells you its your fault. And then she comforts you again, and the cycle continues. She slowly isolates you from anyone or anything that threatens her.
I feel the pain James Taylor. I've wasted a lot of time on drugs too. I feel his pain. 😮😮😮😮😮
Carly’s sitting there listening to Taylor babble and thinking, “You lying hypocrite. You’re on smack right now.”
I think you may be right
Carly is right. To put it another way, the purpose of drugs, pretty much all drugs is to numb some aspect of oneself. In the process of doing so one also numbs oneself from others and their feelings, needs, etc.. This is why drugs work against having a healthy and happy relationship. If you are having problems and conflicts with someone in a relationship or the person is emotionally/verbally abusive you need to look closer at that person's chemical intake; he or she may not be on illicit street drugs but may be on prescription painkillers or other medicine that affect their behavior.. You may deny the effects of illegal drugs and prescription drugs are the same but they have some of the same effects on our ability to be loving and sensitive to others. It's nice to feel "comfortably numb" but it is also an internal, solo experience that can wreak ruin on our relationships.
