    Great car, great owner, lovely interview. I’ve had both a 987.2 & a 981. Now, I’m the owner of a 2017 718 base & it is spec’d with more options than most the S models I’ve come across. It has Sports Chrono, Sports Exhaust, upgraded Sport + seats & lots of other goodies. You just have to look, but base cars with lots of options are definitely out there. There really isn’t any bad model Cayman. Also, none of them are underpowered, it’s the nut behind the wheel that can make all of them go fast. I bought mine as a daily & I drive it every day. Some of my friends can’t believe I drive it all the time, but it’s such a great car that I ask them, “why would you not drive it all the time?”

    In my opinion, the whole idea of devaluing a Porsche because it’s driven is ridiculous. I’ve had Porsches as my daily drivers (base models) for the last 40+ years and they are meant to be driven. If I want art for arts sake, I’d by a Chagall and hang it on the wall. But, though I still look longingly at my Porsche in the garage, the real joy is starting it up and getting out for a drive every single day. Nice video review!

    I had my first Porsche 987.1 2.7 5 speed manual , fantastic car , totally put it through its paces , lots of drive outs with friends in there 911s wales road trips 2 European road trips , Monte Carlo , Swiss alps , German autobahns , Silverstone track day , totally put the car through it’s paces , believe me I ringed the snot out of it had 75000 miles on it when I bought it and 110000miles when sold it none of this worrying about putting mileage on it just got out and drove the thing like a Porsche should be not sitting under a dust sheet , had a second gear synchro go , a couple of broken springs , discs a few sets of pads , window regulators love breaking but the engine never missed a beat in amazed it never blew up god it took some abuse , when your friends are in front you have to give it everything that’s part of the excitement. At the end of the day it’s all in the bends , it came alive on the right roads , I miss it some times even though I have a 987.2 3.4 pdk now , funny last summer a mate of mine wanted me to test his 986 2.7 manual boxster it surprised me just how good it was still a bloody good fun car that if you want to get on the ladder and you can pick one up for around 4K ...

    Chris Harris from Top Gear used to write for GT Purely Porsche and his opinions are massively respected by the motoring world. At the time of writing for the magazine his previous long termer was a 993 GT2 followed with a short stint in a 996 TT. His purchase of the 2.7 base Cayman back then was considered pretty significant, as the 2.7 model was largely over shadowed by the more powerful and popular "S" model. Recently just brought a base Cayman 987.1 and considered the same options as mentioned in your vid. And the truth is there is more than enough power for the uk roads. Also I know if I had gone for the options, I’d always be saying what if I got the Porsche Cayman, but I’ll never say what if I got the Audi TT, Mercedes convertible or Audi S3. Feel 100% I made the right choice and paid £10k less than my other options although much older it feels,looks and drives like a 5 year old car not a 12 year old car. It would be nice to content about modifications are they worth the money eg £400 for rear led lights or better to keep the money in case of in expected repairs this is my dilemma
    Saying that i did just refurbish the steering wheel and gear knob with Alcantara and again feel it 100% choice. Finally like your vid been watching for the past month or so, great work and always look forward to the next one

    The 987.1 Cayman S were fitted with upgraded ims bearings from production day 1, so not sure where the 5% issue with ims bearing myth has come from (probably confusion with 911 996 and Boxter 986 forum chat).
    The difference in power delivery between the 987.1 base (245bhp) and the 987.1 S (295bhp) is also significant and noticeable when you stab the throttle.

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS  Před 4 lety

      I didn’t know this. Both 987.1 base and sport got the upgraded IMS?! Nice👍🏼

    • @theawakenment1361
      @theawakenment1361 Před 4 lety +2

      MAX REVS I think the confusion comes from Porsche not ceasing production of the weaker ims bearing until 2005. Leading some to assumed/speculate that the 987.1 S’s were fitted with it. It’s impossible for any Cayman S built after 2005 to have the weaker ims bearing as Porsche had stopped manufacturing it.
      Good choice on buying the S 😉 All Caymans are awesome, but that extra power you get on the S just makes the car even better 😁

      Thanks for sharing this information about the upgraded IMS in all 987.1's. I’ve been avoiding looking at 987.1S models as I was informed by a local specialist that not all 987.1 S had the upgraded IMS...

    • @theawakenment1361
      @theawakenment1361 Před 4 lety +3

      Roland Rohrle - I think that assumption comes from when the weaker ims bearing was discontinued by Porsche (2005), which led a few people to believe that a few of the early 987.1S’s (made in 2005) were fitted with the weaker ims bearing. I guess it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that a few of the early Caymans may have been fitted with the weaker bearing and changed after a year or so, but is Porsche the kind of company to make a new model out of spare parts that have proven issues with previous models manufactured 10 years prior (986 and 996)? I’ve owned two 987.1 S’s - a 2006 and a 2007 and both had the stronger ims bearing fitted (can be checked when you change the clutch). Also, the 20+ people I’ve known who have owned early Cayman S’s have never had an issue with the ims bearing on their cars. Honestly, I think it’s a myth perpetuated because of the problems with the 986 & 996 models that came before it.

      Hason Lavajunk The 987.1 models have cats on the front headers and in the rear back boxes , where as the 987.2 s have the cats in the front headers there are no cats in the rear even though the rear back boxes on gen 1 and 2 look the same , A good mode for the 2.7 and 3.4 gen 1 is to remove the rear secondary cats it passes mot , you need to replace the headers to 200 cell on the 987.2 “more power more sound “ I’m pretty sure the 987.2 headers have 2 sets of cats in each where as the upgraded headers have a single set of 200 cell ones ,has your cayman got PASM suspension ? My 987.2 3.4 is like you said fantastic on the smooth but on bumpy back roads it doesn’t like it I know exactly what you are saying , strange but my 2.7 with standard shocks was a lot better . I’ve been looking into a DSC sport controller for the the PASM it’s a plug in controller that apparently completely changes the feel and damping factor ...

If you have driven other Porsche’s (big reds or later GT3s) the brakes don’t stand up to the usual Porsche excellence. Other than that it’s great little pure driving experience. MAX REVS caymans with circa 90k+ miles are sub £10k. A recent search confirms this and that they appear to be in great condition. Let’s fast forward 5, maybe 10 years, when they have 200K+ miles on them, there is no way they are staying at £10k. They’ll be half that. Then in 20 years time they’ll be seen as a classic and prices will rise when the loss of this generation get to the age of it being a nostalgic car of their youth. That’s how it goes.
