Warping the Electribe 2 - Polymeter!

  • In this video, I show a way to make a continuously changing rhythm in the limited 4-bar sequencer by making different-length bars for each track. As Krakou2 pointed out, music theory calls this "polymeter". I've updated the title to reflect this.
    If you've used an Electribe before, this might be familiar to you. If not, it's a really hard thing to imagine and it's easy to just link an example video.
    I'm still trying to figure out why this sometimes causes step sequencing to break.

    Thanks for the video. I was really hoping you were going to find some way to incorporate that crazy old cell phone in it though.

      Kevin Nelson same here :) thought he was going to sample DTMF melodies from the phone or something lol

    It's not a glitch. Other drum machines can do polymeter, too, for example the Drum Brute and Drum Brute Impact.

    Cool! Thanks for the demo, love learning new things about this machine.

    Thanks Jerling. I am considering one of these machines and your tutorial helps. I have a couple of questions for you. Could you remove the 4/4 beat altogether and use this method to create odd times like 3/4, 5/8 & 6/8. These are my favorite meters for guitar playing and I want to combine this machine with guitar. Also, I am really on the fence between the electribe and the electribe sampler. I mentioned guitar work, so it would be great to use the sampler as a type of looper and still have a stripped down synth section. However the filters on the electribe seem oh so nice and as I understand are not in the sampler, like the moog filter. I cant decide. What made you go with the sampler and and do you ever feel that the synths in the sampler leave you wanting?

      +Don Parkison - Did you ever find an answer to this? I was also wondering this same question- I would pick up a sampler tomorrow if I thought it could do more interesting time signatures.

    I was trying something like this with different length looping clips in Ignite, it can get get alot of interest and variation to an otherwise very simple loop, nice to know the Electribe can do it too thanks

    what we really needed was a way to play some zippy fast 808 trap hats... not the ability to do Polyrhythms. Or to use the electronic music term for Polyrhythms, train wrecked beats.

    i hope this doesn't get patched either , or if they do patch it, implement it into the firmware somehow ...i just hope they support this thing . it seems to have allot of potential and this makes me divided now between the synth based tribe and this one. you should make more videos on your findings!

    i dont understand...... i m french my english is not 100/100.... but we can not adjust: length separately from one track to another , if a track is: length 2 each track will be length 2, the same with the bpm, only with : last step a track can be varied relative to each other, i tried !!!!!

  • @krakou2
    @krakou2 Před 9 lety

    i don't get why you say 16 measure? You still have 4 bars with metric variations. It's called polymetry. Somethng i missed?

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling  Před 9 lety +1

      Does it count as polymetry if the signatures share the same note value? I know it's not a true extension of the pattern length, and you don't have a lot of control over the contents, but it's just a way to squeeze a little more out of the E2s.

    • @krakou2
      @krakou2 Před 9 lety

      +Jergling i think but i'm not 100% sure that polyrythmy has different note values within the same meter. The rotation and syncronisation of different time signatures is polymetry. Really not an expert. I have an octatrack and it works pretty much the same. The other workaround is to work at half bpm. Say 60bpm if you want 8 bars of 120bpm

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling  Před 9 lety +2

      +krakou2 Yeah, Elektrons expand upon this feature and actually advertise it. The half BPM trick is OK but you drop down to 8th note resolution. Much more control than this setup, though.

    • @krakou2
      @krakou2 Před 9 lety

      what's your take on the es2 strictly fun & sound wise? I want a sidekick for the OT, something playable. Limitations are not really a pb as stems are provided by OT.

  • @aerophylix4790
    @aerophylix4790 Před 7 lety

    It's called a Polyrhythm, some other drum machines have it, and could it glitch out due to the amount of voices being used is at max, because what you do to each sound can make it use more than one of the 24 voices

    • @aerophylix4790
      @aerophylix4790 Před 7 lety

      Polymeter*
      But it basically makes rythms that are Polyrhythms

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling  Před 7 lety

      Aero Phylix That would be the reason this video is called "polymeter".
