    A fascinating glimpse into the transitional tech - the link between Selectric and Wheelwriter series I never even knew existed. Definitely interesting, probably rare as hen's teeth too.

  • @KeritechElectronics
    @KeritechElectronics Před 21 dnem

    There's indeed a lot of cleaning to do in those machines - if left there to gather the dust, the grease will turn into gluebricant and make the whole thing sticky or even stuck. I'm in the process of getting my own Selectric III going again, it's gonna take lots and lots of work - but I'm determined to pull that off, learning along the way, reading technical manuals and watching lots of videos from Phoenix Typewriter, IBM instructional films etc. Some parts like the tab escapement mechanism were literally glued together. I had to remove the carrier and put it in an ultrasonic cleaner, then dry, reattach the cables and re-lubricate. The foam stuff is obviously a goner, it was just sticky goo and I wouldn't touch that nastiness without nitrile gloves. You had a nice way of removing it :).

    It's the Velocity Magnet Assembly/Velocity Slider Restore area. IBM No. 10 lubricant is SAE 30 non-detergent oil. IBM No. 23 is Mobilgrease #28 which is a synthetic grease. Lithium grease which I see you have here, always dries out. But you probably know that by now.

    • @DandyDon1
      @DandyDon1 Před 2 lety

      It's also possible to cycle the machine manually (powered off) without a cycle tool. That is what the knurled knob on the left side of the print shaft is for.

    Personally, since I just bought an IBM 95 Electronic Typewriter which was stored for a very long time, I plan to make sure everything is loosened and can be hand cycled easily first. It will also need a new main drive belt as the original has many cracks in the rubber. McMaster-Carr to the rescue.

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling Před 2 lety

      It's been a long time, but I'm reasonably sure there's a mix of case and keybed screws on the bottom. You'll need to undo just the case screws (leave the big keybed ones in or the keys will slide around).

    good video thanks. I have a PC88 and I have 4 random keys in the bass register both lower E's, low C and low G#. Took it all apart, cleaned the circuit board as there was some evidence of some fluid being spilled in that register. I used the graphite technique on all the contacts. It's spotless. Turned it back on and same keys not playing. I switched the two ribbons and same issue. Going to do a factory reset. Battery is low so I'm going to replace it. Any suggestions? Thanks very much!

    • @Jergling
      @Jergling Před 7 lety

      The good news is that most parts in the K2500 seem individually replaceable. The bad news is I have no idea how the K2500 actually reads key inputs and I haven't touched this thing in 2 years. Your first course of action should be to make sure there's continuity between the key switches and their corresponding wires. You can do this with one of those free multimeters from Harbor Freight. Spills are a massive headache, because they can damage traces and components from the backside, so you have to learn to fly by instrumentation. Good luck!

    these Selectrics were some of the most sophisticated selectrics ever built because you have the analog guts of a selectric hardwired to a computer. It was IBM's first attempt at an electronic typewriter. It preceeded the wheel writers but I prefer these. The Typing Keyboard is actually a computer keyboard and is not working a mechanical switch to the typewriter but instead telling the computer what to type and the computer types for you. If memory serves IBM Electronic Typewriter 50 and the first few models were prone to issues. These got cleared up more in the later models, Incidently, CODE + Backspace = Backspace without correcting. I agree with what other people have said.. you have to be VERY CAREFUL working on these. The electronics are VERY sensitive and static electricity can wipe the whole thing out quickly. Still this machine was a marvel in it's time.

    • @c00kee
      @c00kee Před 7 lety

      Valid points, but it's a common mistake to refer to this as a 'Selectric', even IBM never referred to it as such, although they did re-use the name for the Wheelwriter - go figure. 'Selectric' as we all would expect is the classic design where the 'golfball' is positioned by the selection tapes, and character selection is encoded via the latching interposers. This was consistent through all the range including the I/O variations where the Keyboard and Printer were mechanically separate. The 50, 60 & 75 did have largely mechanical keyboards, only the 65, 85 & 95 adopted the PC-style electronic keyboard.

    • @michaeldodd9671
      @michaeldodd9671 Před 4 lety

      @@c00kee Yes you're right.. It was called the IBM Electronic Typewriter, to distinguish it from the Selectric line, but the keyboard resembled the Correcting Selectric III and it used the same element. However, unlike the Selectrics, these typewriters (From Electronic 50 and up) communicated to the element electronically instead of physically which is a huge difference. These babies were so complex, they were amazing, but their complexity also made them prone to a lot of issues. Would love to have a working version of the 50.

    • @DandyDon1
      @DandyDon1 Před 2 lety

      Actually the IBM Memory 50 and 100 Typewriters had the full Selectric mechanism with many solenoids added for automated operation. The keyboard being much the same as the Selectric II, had a series of Reed Switches to convert key strokes into digital data. Memory was about 2K per page. The IBM 65, 85 and 95 are extremely stripped down versions. They are even more stripped down than the Model 50 (which I believe was to replace the IBM Executive) 60, and 75. With the 65, 85 and 95 the Power Module gear set was eliminated and replaced with a stepper motor.

    That selectric 3 is like all selectric 3's that are neglected & just needs a good shop cleaning, by a professional, who knows how to deal with ALL the issue's you have brought up. Amateur typewriter technicians will have a slow & probably unsuccessful effort to fix & clean a machine in this condition. Give me 2 hours & EVERYTHING on that machine will work & look Great !! BTW that spring is wrong, yes you can make "homemade" springs work but that one is too weak & will stretch & fail very very soon. You really need an exact diameter & coils winding & tensile strength for it to last more that a week. I have a technique to deal with the old foam, takes 15 minutes I can clean the keyboard & all crud & old insulation & membrane in 10 minute I can fix the Return in 2 minutes I can take the case off in 20 seconds....czcams.com/video/NUEx6oK4NMI/video.html L o n g L i v e the S e l e c t r i c

    Nothing you have done will help with fixing that machine ! The Key board has separated, needs to be sent to specialty IBM re-builders. You have spent most you time on superficial, non critical areas. This machine is MORE complicated than the IBM Selectric & those are COMPLICATED ! ! Why oh' Why do Amateurs post video's of things they no nothing about. Professionally trained & 35 years repairing selectrics makes me a expert. Those last little embossed negatives on your video are the chrome letters pealed off of a failing type element/ball. Nothing you can do will improve or fix any problems with this typewriter even with the help of GTS & books, nothing ! !
