  • Houdini is a 3D software developed by SideFX, that is based in Canada. Even though Houdini has been around for a long period time which is almost 25 years now it did not get its fair share of professional production projects such as VFX and video games compared to the other packages until the last decade, when artists and studios realized how big of a beast it truly is, and started using it on the biggest projects to complete the most difficult tasks and to achieve the best and most realistic results.
    Today we are going to take a look at what Houdini is and how it is being used in different industries to help artists and studios work on their projects.

      don´t undersestimate the modelingcapacities in Houdini. On the first look it looks very slow and unintuitive, but the combination of direct and procedual modeling makes it very fast to the end of a modelingstate. Sure, in the beginning of a modeling project its slower than for example blender, but when you setup a few procedual tasks then its getting faster and faster, becaus, if you must change something, all other stuff is changing as well. And then the possibility to built your own tools it unique. You need a wheel in different looks every time? Built your own procedual wheeltool and in future with a few setups you have every kind of wheel you need. In the past i also modeled my stuff in Blender and do the other things in Houdini, but now i do more and more only in Houdini.

    • @digitalconsciousness
      @digitalconsciousness Před 3 lety +6

      You have always been able to do modeling and animation in Houdini. 20 years ago, it was always said that if you want to do special effects right, use Houdini. Only the best oceans and smoke plumes were found from using Houdini back then. imo, Maya has been lagging behind in particle effects for a long time. It's only recently that they came out with Bifrost to have some sort of competitive edge. We're at the age where modeling and animation are such common and expected features that even a game engine like Unity provides basic modeling tools to their users, so it would be expected that a program like Houdini absolutely would have them. Houdini has always been the best and probably will continue to be the best when it comes to the hard to do special effects like fluids, particles, smoke, fire, oceans, etc. That is how I view it at least. I started with Maya 4.0 back in the year 2000, so I've been observing for quite a while.

      It does appear Houdini is used for a lot particle-related FX. The modelling capabilities don't seem to stand out from the rest.

    Houdini is a failed program as it is not as special as you describe
    In addition, it is easy for you to understand Einstein's theory and difficult for you to understand Houdini
    It is not worth learning while there are many programs that are much easier and better than it as well!

      I bet your best movie was made mostly in Houdini.
