The world still isn't ready my friend. Tool are so ahead of their time. I remember seeing them 3X live in 2001 and 2002. Lateralus closed out the shows. During this time MJK was still running around in his skivvies and wearing prosthetics, wigs etc. It was so intense, otherworldly and surreal, I don't think the likes of that will ever be seen again. I saw them recently in November. That was the f'n shit also. A calmer MJK, but still a spectacular frontman. Bill Hicks was a friend of the band. The song is about religious "cult" leaders like L. Ron Hubbard who mislead the mindless. The band has said so on several occasions. The lyrics are obviously negatively portraying the "martyr" as another fake in the long line of fake zealots we've had throughout human history.
Maynard is basically saying get on that cross and die for me, prove you are also willing to sacrifice. And once you're gone we'll be here for the next phony. This is obviously not about Bill Hicks who had a like mind when it came to religion if you have ever listened to his albums. I have them all and can tell you he relates to the bands mindset, that's why they became friends. They had even tried to collaborate but it never came to fruition. Third Eye is more of a Hicks tribute as they used his stand up at the beginning of the song (all spoken word is Hicks). Read MJK's biography most of the info is in there.
I don't know where people are getting their info but this song exposing cults as nonsense is obviously not a tribute by lyrics alone. That being said Bill Hicks has said the same about religion and it's leaders in his stand up. He is well known for his disdain of his religious upbringing. RIP Mr. Bill...

There was never really a falling out of D'amour as a matter of fact they are still friends and Danny and Maynard have guest appeared on a couple of his projects. It's kind of contradictory to say their songs aren't about anything in particular then site a particular subject. I am aware Maynard likes to keep the subject matter vague but there are references to he and Danny answering this question in different interviews. And saying the song is about D'amour is creating drama where there isn't any.

I gotta say I'm 55 and Been rocking to bands since I could walk and honestly I was BURNED OUT .Captain Beefheart was the only thing that was keeping my ears tingling. THEN Tool came out with Fear Inoculum ( mind you I was already into Tools catalog) but this album turned me into a gitty little screaming chic at a Beatles show.It kick started my love of music from the brink of oblivion. I went back and found out soooooo much stuff from. The old music that I missed the first time around. I've had Tools streaming channel on non stop from day one and still it's not lost its power to drive me on Tool could be the greatest band I've ever listened to .Proof that being good people and working your ass off can pay off. You two do a very genuine reaction video keep up the good work!rock on

If you’re going through the catalog, here’s some info.
Opiate - Tool’s first E.P. is raw and short. Its the only place you’ll find 3 minute songs. It’s experimental for its era, but incredibly aggressive and driving.
Undertow - Tool’s first full length and well funded album. Still very aggressive and driving, but darker and more visceral.
NOTE: At this point, the first bassist Paul D’Amour left to become a guitarist. Justin Chancellor took over and the band became much more experimental and cerebral.
Ænima - Despite the change in line-up, Tool’s 2nd full album saw some of the most whimsical work. They were more comfortable as creators, and almost comical in their lyrics and topics.
Lateralus - Tool’s 3rd full length showed some of their most experimental and break-out music. But, the rumor at the time was that Tool almost broke up before this album over contract negotiations. Some believe Schism was meant as a love letter to the band. This album shows a lot of emotion with its mind blowing creativity.
10,000 Days - This album feels like an emotional journey. The members know each other and their work, so thoughts and feelings have more room to be explored. There’s even room for comedy. (Rosetta Stoned).
Fear Inoculum - Jury is still out. Tool albums take time to digest. I will say, Maynard has very accurately portrayed some of the turmoil and often contradictory perspectives and desires that occur as one ages.
This is a very rough break-down. There is always more to be said. Just be prepared for Opiate. It’s damn near thrash. I love it, but it was the first thing I heard in as a kid back in ‘93. A lot of people who were exposed to Tool’s later work first have trouble appreciating it.

As I understand it, this song is about Andy Kaufman, the guy who played Twiggy on Taxi & Laverne and Shirley. He and Maynard were somehow good friends. The Man In the Moon with Jim Carrey is a great movie about Andy's life. He was VERY funny. He had a LOT of nothing to say, but he was SOOO funny. The very beginning is just Danny tapping on a glass ash tray, then it builds from that. That instrument is guitar, believe it or not. The capabilities of production and effects is amazing. Haha loved your reaction when the song first drops! That noise in the beginning is the guitarist Adam picking the guitar right at the bottom (below the bridge) where the strings are fastened. That's how he can still bend the notes with his left hand.
So glad you guys are pulling onto the Tool highway, it's a long but epic road ahead! I personally think the greatest understanding of the band comes from hearing the albums front to back. They're all centered around different themes and were recorded years, sometimes decades apart so they were made at very different periods in the band member's lives. A lot of the songs are meant to transition from one to the next, so there's definitely a vibe that builds up over the course of the whole album. Hearing just one song at a time from a Tool album is like taking a sip but not finishing the drink (if that makes sense).
