This is the song that did it for me. I had Undertow. Saw Track #1 on MTV. Heard Forty Six & 2 on the radio. But when I heard Eulogy for the first time off the LP. It was over. Knew this band would be better than any band I knew.
Same!!! It was also my go-to to get others into the band.
Track #1 is what I called it with my boys when they were rocking it aged 5 and 7 Avoided the "daddy what's a stink fist?" question 😂
Yep.
This was the one that hooked me too. Specifically that line "Come down, get off your fuckin' cross..." got me.
this song is also my favorite tool song of all.... great song
I see that you have noticed that TooL constructs their music much like the classical composers, it's done in movements and all the instruments are working together to reach a common goal.
You're not wrong. You've just experienced Tools sense of humor for the first time.
At the start there are 2 different sounds. One is Adam Jones picking the bottom two strings of his guitar between the nut and the tuners, the other is Maynard making megaphone noises. Then the rest of the band comes in.
Too great an explanation!😆🌸🌿
Correct, then Justin with his digitech bass whammy
Chur. I read that on the TOOL faq 20 years ago, at Kabir Akhtar's toolshed site
Strings between the bridge and the tail for the bottle clicking . Sound so good doesn’t it
Live in 1998, Maynard played some sort of wind instrument for the intro part. I cannot recall what it was exactly.
Hey Muggy !
You're jumping around a lot, make sure you check the release date of the albums so you have a better sense of their evolution.
Opiate (ep)- 1992
Undertow- 1993
Aenima- 1996
Lateralus- 2001
10,000 Days- 2006
Fear Innoculum- 2019
Aenima is my favorite!!!!
The clinging bottle sound is Adam Jones hitting A and D strings behind the bridge 👍🏼 1:52
It's worth mentioning that, according to legend, Danny has done all his drum tracks on every record in one take.
I believe it.....another one I heard was Undertow was recorded in a week and Aenima was recorded in a month. Not alot of time for multiple takes!
He also only uses wood from endangered species to make his drums 😊
@mnnicholas304 lmfao! It's why his sound is so clean! For real though he is a poly-rythmic master and "according to legend" he can carry beats with each finger on each hand. If this is true It's no wonder they are able to produce the the wild ass change ups and beats I don't think a 4/4 is something that comes up in writing sessions.
For sure, he is a legit drummer.
This one is very tongue-in-cheek. This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. Great reaction. 💙🤘🏻🎶
lol i always pictured this one being about L Ron Hubbard, the founder on Scientology...and yes, it is VERY mocking. It pokes fun at the sheeps following everything their "omniscient" leaders say.
That's what I'd heard and the lyrics track with what I know about him. The band also has a history with his cult.
🤘🧙♂️🤘
I've always known it to be about L Ron Hubbard. If it ain't, it most certainly a powerful religious figure. "Not all martyrs see divinity, but at least you tried" he's definitely mocking someone
I absolutely agree it's about L. Rob Hubbard. He seems to a sore spot in fake religion cults to Maynards eyes.
nah ... its bill hicks 😘
Danny has said its Hubbard.
When he loses the megaphone and the band goes full live, doesn’t matter the size of venue; you think it’s coming down.
Sacramento, October 6th, 2023.
Cannot wait.
@@laurabuer4714Saw them in Knoxville November 3rd definitely changed my life 🤣🤣🤣
The audio engineer is the 5th member of the band! Without that perfect engineering, the "Tool" sound would be completely different. People don't realize how much the engineering affects the entirety of the album.
A profound observation!
Amen
Evil Joe, produces his own eulogy.... Aka he chooses to crucify a nation and goes to build another one. But what if Paul rebuilds a nation or bees take it over
I listened to this cd everyday for about 3 years. Seriously. It’s my ultimate album love.
By chance did you sleep with the album cover next to your pillow? Does the album cover have pages that stick when you try to turn them? 🤪
I LOOOOOVE that you found Tool, and are pumping out these reaction videos.
You have such a badass, pure energy man. Keep it up!!! Enjoy the 🔧🌀
MY brain can’t understand how TOOL comes up with these songs 🤯
have you tried turning it on first? are you sure its plugged in? If all of that is good try taking it out and blowing on it and putting it back in. your brain should work then 😛
yup, he's like we NOT gonna miss you
I'm thoroughly enjoying your journey through the legends of Tool...spent my 20s as a music photographer touring...and Maynard and Tool kept me sane and in good company. Love your insights and pure joy. ❤
I was one who suggested you listen to this. Not the ONLY one, but one.
I'm excited.
Fun and funky are 2 descriptions I never thought of in this song and that just goes too show how🔧 connects on so many levels
can you imagine what life might be like if we had no music??........... me neither 🤪
This song & album is dedicated to the greatest comedian / philosopher of our time. To know Tool you must know Bill Hicks
I think this song about fans meeting their idols, and the realization that not all of them are as good or kind as they thought they might be.
Well put.
Maynard has a troubled past with religion. Pretty sure this song is about Jesus
I agree. Jesus is an idol too, no?
Bill Hicks was most likely an atheist.@@1984Musicforever
@@1984Musicforever that's another interpretation that I have, but I like the more universal approach more.
Most likely about L. Ron Hubbard. Or could be about Maynard himself?
Been at TOOL fan since there inception back in 1992. This is a great track. I always enjoy your reactions, especially the TOOL ones. Keep up the great work.
Dude you have a great ear, you nailed it about the mix. They try really hard intentionally not to do the cliched thing and to treat each instrument (including vocals) as important as the next. Also I loved the giggle in the intro about his mocking tone bc that’s exactly what it’s about, his sarcasm about being a martyr 😎🤘🔥
Awesome reaction .thank you
That clicking you hear in the intro are done with claves. A wooden percussion instrument played with the hands.
I think that's what they use for the sound when Spongebobs snail Gary hits his eyes together lol so that's what I think of when I hear it
Please check out their live album Salival and another good one too is Ticks and Leeches, if you haven't already.
Such a clever tongue in cheek song, of course the whole album is a dedication to the late comedian bill hicks
so, what sounds like a keyboard in the beginning is Maynard singing a note through a bullhorn, and pulling the trigger to turn it on and off.
That's Tool polyrythm f*cking with your head. It's beautiful.
Megaphone tomfoolery
"why are you so surprised?" "Goodbbbyyyyyye"
I always felt as a teenager when I first heard it and fell in love with it, that he was talking about Jesus. I still do.
I feel after his mom he has this confusions of hated for Jesus like she didn't deserve it why her she was a devoted Christian and after her stroke she held onto to her faith I think he had a hard time with it than the church mocked her saying her condition was a result of her sins he was angry about it he talks about in in his other band APC
I kind of prefer to think that he's referring to a real person and not one that's fictional in a fictional book and likely a person that never really existed
If i had a voice, which I probably don't, but next I would go with 1. H., 2. Intermission + Jimmy, 3. Rosetta Stoned, 4. Culling Voices, 5. Jambi.
Your comment of clanging two bottles together made me think "Warriors...come out and play!"
Much love
u got this from a different angle, the mocking part, man your reuiews are fire1
spicy ingredients. i felt that
They are amazing live! Danny Carey has to be the best drummer ever, behind Neil Peart, of course!
...
Both Danny and Neil have earned their reputation. But, there are drummers ou there that are just worlds ahead of them.
@@gSWG3Rthat's your opinion I suppose
@youtubebannedme4207 I mean... nothing Neil Peart did was more difficult and technical than Danny's playing with Tool. Rush are simply from a different era where the technical prowess of drummers these days were never heard or seen... because many didn't exist. Modern drummers are able to access and learn material at the click of a button, so the range of influence and material that one can learn is vastly bigger than before.
Nice video sir and a great song. Thanks.
Yeah this song is a journey
Bill Hicks, the comedian, is who i believe the song is about.
You would be correct. They were good friends.
The whole album was dedicated to comedian Bill Hicks
There is a beginning, middle and end to these songs so you don't choke. Without the breaks it's too much... wet all might explode... or dannys arms may fall off. All i know is respites are needed.
The octopus that is Danny Cary
i exploded once ... but luckily my buddy played the song in reverse and i imploded back together again 😜
Sylvia Massey produced this album and did an incredible job. She was one of the pioneers of miking a guitar amp in a shower or inside a piano so it would reverberate off the piano strings, etc... she also had sweat lodge tents and intense stuff set up in the studio. You should take a look at the song "pushit" for some amazing vocals.
This album was produced by David Bottrill. Sylvia Massey produced Undertow.
@@danieloliver2659 I was just going to correct that too!
this is such a great song . And with tool if ever you're asking who or what the songs about he purposely leaves it open to your own interpretation for the most part. And if ever you witness two fans arguing over what something is about, Please be patient with them... for the most part they are good people and it's easy to want some of these songs to mean what you want them to mean. Tool fans are cool fans
🔥🎶🔥🎶🔥🎶 was soooooo waiting for you to spiral 🌀 down this one to see how you enjoy the build up on this one…the “bottle clicking” sounds are created from Rhythm band sticks
He’s mocking for sure!! Amazing
that sound at the beginning is actually Adam playing the guitar at the base , below the last fret and between the bridge. Sounds cool
The sound of a guitar when you play behind the pickup
0:43 - If you want to see how this is played with guitar, check out Cameron Winters on CZcamss, he has good covers of this and basically every other Tool songs.
For me the biggest surprise was that the "ticking/clicking" noise was not by Danny Carey with drums but that it was Adam Jones with his guitar! :D
It's said this song was written about L Ron Hubbard. Maynard absolutely despises the Church of Scientology. I kinda think it fits the Eulogy for Jesus too. Standing above the crowd he had A voice that was strong and loud kind of makes me think of the sermon on the mound.
But he says not all martyrs see divinity but at least you tried. I think it's about Hubbard
definitely agree I just think it could also be about Jesus. As we all know Maynard has A lot of resentment towards the church in general.. @@Half-Cocked
You should listen to the album undertow
L Ron Hubbard, that's who.
Prayers
RIP Prayers to Family and Friends😢
Damn ! Is that right?
I never knew, thought it may be his own persona. ...
So few people get this right. Good to see that you do.
LOL, no.
If you want to hear some early tool there's a few videos floating around on CZcams from a lot of their demo tapes for songs like eulogy stinkfist and push it. Different takes on like salivals pushit and a version of eulogy that I feel is better with that little ending riff
THE Apitomy of Musical Artistry! The Pinnacle.....
SO LONG, WE WISH YOU WELL
3:50. Absopolutedly!
One of my ABSOLUTE fav things on CZcams is when another person Discovers the Tool Rabbit Hole..
Welcome Bro..lol
It's a guitar voicebox.. goes through the guitarist microphone... And I think you're right I think it is mocking
It's your own eulogy!!!
"not all martyrs see divinity"
When I was a teen I was so sure this was Jesus's eulogy.
Welcome to spirit.
🤘🤘
This is my alarm clock sound.
Your a genius...
Please listen to Right in two!!! It’s amazing!!!
This song is about you!!! Man
This song has its own rabbit hole. Check out who the eulogy is for and who he became after his resurrection.
DAMN Yuo!
He's talking about L.Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology.
They are engraving the marble headstone.
You'll like the song Lateralus if you haven't heard it already
Rest in peace Bill Hicks
Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned DOUBLE HEADER REQUEST.
Prepare to melt your brain!!!! And laugh your ass off!!! 😂😂😂
omg 😂 as soon as you said it sounds mocking.... Then proceeded to describe hearing Maynard standing at the street with a mega phone saying his bit to the friends and family of someone's funeral... I lost it... Because I could see it so clearly... Hilarious... Then when the Audio got close and clear l just imagined a whole story....
So this was the Zach Galifianakis friend why was asked not to attend the funeral, but shows up anyway but gets stopped at the the road... So he proceeds to pull out his bull horn and say his wild Eulogy, interrupting the priest and everything... Eventually they let him in, in hopes he would shut up... But he proceeds to grab the mic and yell, just like he had been into the bull horn, just blowing everyone's faces off, as they all try to cover thier ears. then people starts trying to get the mic and a whole wrestling match breaks out and they are Chasing him all around the casket while he continues to scream him Eulogy to his greatest friend.
Then once it is said and done, when he has been contained and order is restored, he realizes he at the wrong funeral burial site completely
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Megaphone 📣
Sounds like silverware on ceramics
Picking behind the bridge
4:18 The imagery of him using a megaphone from the street at a funeral is boss as hell, sir!!😂 I’m old. Been with these dudes since before you. This song isn’t about making fun of Jesus. Even when angry and provoked the man is far more calculating. It’s a song about megalomaniac behavior and how it should be shunned. Tool’s message is never pinpoint unless specified(hooker with a penis, wings for Marie, all the L. Ron Hubbard references)😂; it’s blanketed for interpretation. It’s an anti Diva song, I guess. And I’ve seen it live a few times, there at least used to be a duck call through a megaphone at the beginning. And Adam doesn’t make the rest of the sounds. Danny was hitting micd parts of his hardware to add rhythm to the plinking.
Bill Bottrill was search out and hired for this album. You work with Peter Gabriel but he did the sound on this producer genius like all the other guys in this band!! Great song great f****** sense of humor and honorable honest modesty
This album is dedicated to Bill Hicks so I'm sure the song is about bill
Maynard did this song live with a megaphone and would do the beeps in the beginning with the alert beep of the megaphone
I wonder if the sound is the siren button on the megaphone 🤔
The rest is Danny & Justin
He is mocking someone. IMO he's mocking all evangelists. After seeing his Mother completely deluded by her church he holds a special hatred for people that offer fake hope to weak or ignorant people in order to control them and bleed them for money.
"Yeah, standing above the crowd
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground
Someone who seemed to feel the same
Someone prepared to lead the way
And someone who would die for me
Will you?
Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin' lie"
I'm looking forward to your reaction to Holly Trinity by Tool. For me it's a real journey in a different musical dimension, but I'm not objective as a fan since 2000
Please please please give Ticks and Leeches a listen!!!🎉
Love your Tool vids
RIP Bill Hicks 🚬
Sounds like Gary the snails eyes from Sponge Bob clanking together
SPICY INGREDIENTS
I've sung this at karaoke a couple of times. Singing TOOL at karaoke for me has always been a 50/50, half the time I fall much too short, the other half the time are among my best performances. Unlkke the other songs, ive never fallen off the tightrope on this one. Made it to the other side safely and left the crowd priperly confused and bemuddled.
And yeah, fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones. Rapists and murderers.
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
It sounds like a Marimba. But its a guitar
Go bucs
JC.
Maynard is humming and turning the mic on and off. If you listen very carefully you can here Maynard humming
As far as I know (I could be wrong) this song is about L. Ron Hubbard, the inventot of Scientology and the man who has written more fiction than anyone ever. I could be wrong.
Sometimes street preachers use megaphones...ÆNEMA was the experimental college age kid that brought together the genius of them all til now. My theory and others say its his and the rest of the bands whos EGO died and lead to tje rest of evolution
Hey Bud don't worry! It's satire mocking El Ron Hubbard. So if you look back and 95 time with tool they were almost involved with they actually played live at the Scientology Center. The hate-filled on Hubbard get it. It's their sense of humor. The noise at the beginning you here going bop bop bop is Maynard making a noise to a megaphone
Don’t forget that tool never release official lyrics with the albums. It’s all guesswork. Some lyrics are pretty obvious and some not so much.
Lol
