👴 Old Composer Reactions 🤘
“The purgatory that is Tool.”
Beautifully said.
Amen to that!!
The “synth” you’re referring to is actually Maynard with a megaphone.
Was going to say the same thing. He's singing a long note and just tapping the input trigger. Very creative and haunting sounding
Never knew that. I thought it was one of Danny's mandala pads
69th like on this comment.. Nice.
Only know this from seeing them play this live at Ozzfest ages ago.
@@WhiteDwarfVR4 I read this in the voice of that dude that reviews old military MRE's ahahha.. Nice.
Maynard's melodies were so on point on this album. Especially this song.
Was but a taste of what was to come in Lateralus.
I'm so glad you did Eulogy. So over looked and happens to be my favorite song by my favorite band.
It’s not overlooked. They just have so many great songs…can’t listen to them all at once. :)
It’s my favorite as well. I saw them pay it live which they’ve only done a couple times.
It’s a solid choice
@@benkelly7182envious affff
I’ve got to see them twice since Fear Innoculum, and as great as that was I’d kill for Eulogy
That said, they played Intolerance outta nowhere n it was Danny’s birthday and I think (?) Maynard’s was coming up or recent maybe (?) but He was CLEARLY driven by Danny Bday (audience got to sing happy bday to him), you could tell it was pushing Maynard to prove he still had it eventho they were getting old
Intolerance literally had the stadium shaking so hard I thought the actual stadium was going to collapse…
Amazing
Not to mention Danny’s double bass ending at end of Schism with that brief moment of silence before audience went crazy, was so powerful that it was still reverberating Thru my body in the stands for a good 15 seconds…
I’ve seen LOTS of bands n never felt such power in my life
@@ACarter87 that’s awesome! I saw them on that tour and they did play hooker with a penis which I didn’t expect.
There are live versions of this where you can see Maynard using his whole body to hold that scream at the end. Crazy stuff. Looks like a demon invoking hell.
Yeah those old live performances were amazing, Maynard was always so tense and focused. In that live clip, at the end of Eulogy right after Maynard's big scream, the last 8 or so bars Danny goes into that tribal drum beat, Maynard busts into a trace dance thing that just looked hilarious and cool as shit.
Good byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaahhhhh. Too bad he can’t quite match that now, but still
@@assmaster420 I think he could do it but he might die which would be ironic lol
Maynard has a lot of great screams, but I think this is my favorite.
That’s a good metaphor, since the scream goodbye is to Jesus
Eulogy is one of those Tool tracks that I never check off as being one of my favorites and yet every time I do listen to it, I always think it really kicks ass. It creates so much space and expansiveness.
THATS WHAT IM SAYING
There's a reason it's the second track ;)
That repeating noise in the beginning is Maynard through a megaphone
I’ve heard that this is about L Ron Hubbard.
It could apply to many, but more specifically Bill Hicks.
@@thegoonbats Danny said it's about Ronny Hubbard. As below, so Above.
@@scottmatznick3140 I have not heard that before, but I trust your word. Maynard also was the one who wrote the lyrics, so that could be Danny's interpretation.
The production on Aenima and Lateralus are, for my money, the best of all Tool albums. David Bottrill produced both and is an absolute master.
If you were to pin down the 'sound' of Tool over their entire career together, it would absolutely be found within Aenima and/or Lateralus.
Aenima has that angst and sarcastic comedy from their earlier years, and Lateralus goes hard into the trippy, melodic greatness that Tool has mastered today.
I think Aenima could have a better mix. 10000 days is better IMHO…
@@chriscoote2690 Mix? Maybe. Production? No way.
Idk why Aenima gets so much praise I personally think it sounds awful compared to how good the others sound
I will say, idk if you know this, or how true this is, Bottrill recorded Danny’s drums sideways !
Meaning instead of normal headphone on hi-hat to your left like your sitting at drums , just like every other record since beginning of time, he has them reversed with hi-hat on right, etc…..
Which I personally think is amazing and one reason why the album has such a unique sound
I don’t HATE the production, but songs like hooker with a penis sound like they were recorded in a tin can for some reason 🤷♂️
@@chriscoote2690I just left same comment before I saw yours, 🙏 thank you for agreeing since everyone seems to think this is the best produced album ever for some reason
Hey Geebz! I believe the “keyboard” there is actually Maynard singing into the megaphone while keying it on and off. Excellent song and reaction as always.
Heh, paused this video while taking the kiddo to school, I see that this got covered nicely long before I hit send. 😏
I wasn't sure, but I thought I heard that as well!
Yeah, it took me many years to realize the same thing, but you can tell that that sound is in the exact timbre of his voice through a megaphone, if you listen closely.
I'm guessing it probably occurred to me the first time I saw a live performance of this. It was so long ago, I just can't recall.
So cool that Tool is always pushing the envelope with how to approach each instrument.
So, yeah... Geebz, most of us didn't know what we were hearing on first listen, either. As I like to say, anything is obvious in retrospect. Thanks for doing this one! 🙏
I didn’t pick up on this until I saw him do it live. I saw and was immediately like 🤦🏽♂️
I've screamed this at other reactions 😂 great little detail that adds so much.
It kinda blows my mind that there are still any Tool songs you haven’t listened to.
They’ve got the catalog.. good to see him back on a Tool track. It’s kind of what made his account.
@@ToolfanJeffro troof
Apparently it blew his own mind, too.
@@ToolfanJeffro I get that he has to keep doing it this way for his channel, but I would’ve had a really hard time not listening to all their music after finding how amazing they are
I believe the band stated this was about L Ron Hubbard and similar type people.
You’re thinking of Ænima. Eulogy is a dedication to the comedian Bill Hicks.
@@paultullo3275 lol no
I believe I also saw that in an interview.
@@paultullo3275 They wouldn't say that stuff about Bill Hicks. Nope this is definitely an attack on L Ron Hubbard and people like him. "He had a lot to say, he had a lot of nothing to say" Are you familiar with Hubbards books? Science fiction epics that fill an entire book case with God knows how many huge thick books in a series, and they are almost unreadable, literary masturbation by a man with no talent at all. I'd call that a lot of nothing to say.
Bill Hicks was a friend of the band, and he had a lot of SOMETHING to say, and was of a similar mindset to the guys of Tool, think for yourself.
When I was about 13, my sister’s boyfriend at the time had left this album at our house and I was playing Stinkfist on repeat because I already knew it. But then I didn’t skip back in enough time and the beginning of this song drew me in and the journey had begun… Thank you, Anthony, wherever you are because you inadvertently introduced me to my favourite band of all time 🤘😎
My uncle Anthony introduced me to this album when I was also 13. He would come by to visit and was always listening to music and this album was his latest obsession. I didn't like it at first because I was into Metallica mostly but this album opened up a whole world of music that I would one day appreciate. Tool and this album. They tapped into something beyond themselves with AEnima. I'll just leave it at that.
He planted his seed in both you and your sister
@@poker_dealerzing
Always get goosebumps when that riff comes in!
Fun Fact: the clicking in the intro is actually Adam plucking the strings behind the bridge of his guitar
I’ve heard more than one member of the band say it’s about L. Ron Hubbard (founder of Scientology) Maynard often uses things from different religions, especially Christianity, in order to connect it something some of us are familiar with. Yet he still usually won’t say what he thinks about, but clearly he had something in mind while writing. He likes to leave things up to the listener.
Exactly right
Here I am. Perth West Oz. About to crash out. Nothing to watch. And then BANGOLA....geebz is reacting to Eulogy...hell yeah.
I'm on the east coast near Sydney. Midnight happened about to crash, and hear is Geebs! Awesome stuff!!
He seems to have recovered pretty well from COVID. Went to a show January 2022, and on that tour he was doing the scream from The Grudge for the first time live since 2002.
hearing you talk about rhythm in such an excited way makes me want to know what you'd think of Meshuggah!
The eulogy to Bill Hicks makes me tear up every time I hear it. Maynard clearly loved the man, and this is a great expression of that. Third Eye lets you hear parts of his philosophy, and he was a great comedian and had an unfortunately too short life. Bill Hicks is still one of my favorite comedians of all time, and he should have lived longer. Rest in Peace.
The 13:34 mark in this video is my favorite part of this song. Danny’s hi-hat work against the kick and snare is kind of polyrhythmic and I love that stuff.
Yep, im 99% sure the hi hat openings/accents can be considered a 2 over 3 poly
Without doubt; I completely agree. The entire song might actually fall flat without it. Everyone I knew with a drum kit was trying this over and over in 96.
Puscifer Humbling River.....begging ya man.
That was the first Puscifer song that grabbed be. It made my chest feel tight in a good way and gave me chills.
It actually brought me to tears. I was going through some stuff, and it just hit home.
That synthesizer like sound is actually Maynard keying a bullhorn while singing.
7:27 That's an INCREDIBLE way to describe that melody WOW. Made me realize again how awesome Maynard's writing is. That gave me a light bulb moment kind of a feeling 😂
This album is just timeless.
As I understand it, this song was about L Ron Hubbard whom MJK saw as the ultimate hypocrite.
This intro is so good and I've listened to it so much throughout the years that I actually forgot I was watching you and started solving relationships in my head. THATS music
I specifically listen to this song every Easter.
That 5/4 open hi hat drum/vocal part is legendary. Truly original. Danny "the octopus " Carey. 🤘
Its mostly guitar and vocal.
It's 4/3 poly but yeah that part is sick. One of my favorites
🤘🏽
The screams in this, H. And grudge are my favorite Maynard moments
H will forever be my favorite song. Idc how much I love other songs . It's always the best
That scream at the end is great. Especially considering it's double-tracked. The scream so nice he did it twice.
The song that got me into Tool. So creative and amazing. That intro draws you in. Thanks Geebz another great reaction
i'm not going to say that this is the best tool album, or my favorite.
however, it is the one that i connect with as a whole. this track, and 46&2 are, to me, quintessential tool.
a lot of transition in the band in this era, with the change from paul to justin ... a tightening of the overall sound, and each player growing - this is the snapshot of an evolution.
Stinkfist, 46 & 2, H, and Eulogy were all "radio singles" that played on rock radio stations regularly right after Aenima came out.
@@williamcozart8158 i didn't start hearing tool on mainstream radio until Lateralus, did hear the older stuff on college stations though (rip 97.7 woxy)
The first time I listened to this album was while laying on a couch with my eyes closed. I think I must’ve dozed off somewhere in it but when the crying baby starts screaming I shot right up. Scared the hell out of me. 😆
I'm literally in my car rockin out at work.. I'm so excited you finally did this song. 🥰🤘🏼
For those unsure, go listen to Bill Hicks comedy on CZcams. You will find all the references within the lyrics in his skits. Talking about how he would die a martyr, etc. He is also in a lab coat, with a 3rd eye on the inside cover of the album artwork.
To me this song is when I really stated to realize how great Tool was and started to dig into their deeper tracks more. The riffs on this song were so amazing after sitting through the odd build up it makes you think for a first time listener.. “we’ll that’s was awesome I wonder what else they’ve got?!”
"get a little bit of the deeper depth of the depth of what hes deep about" might be the best thing ive heard in a while
The smile when Danny starts the different hand timings says it all
This was my first favorite tool song, and it still up there. As for the lyrical meaning, I’ve always read that Maynard wants people to find their own conclusions. So then literally, the band is a “tool” for the user.
I was lucky enough to see this live in Hershey in 2017, the only time they played it with Maynard for quite some time. They played it again during the 2018 music clinics (without Maynard) and someone asked why it was only played once during that tour, if it had something to do with the passing of Chris Cornell. Justin only answered with a "we don't know who the song is about." Or something along those lines.
By the way, that twangy mono-synth sound is Maynard flicking the volume on/off while speaking into a megaphone. Also, the lyrics referred to the comedian Bill Hicks.
I never knew the exact technique, but I always knew it was his voice. It just has an uncanny valley sound to it that a synth couldn't do.
Always thought it was about L. Ron Hubbard
@@ericfountain4656 maybe rosetta stoned was haha.
LOL, Maynard’s scream at the end was so powerful that Geebz started coughing
The thing I want to know is are you now a true fan of Tool? I can see your appreciation for what they do, but are you listening on your time away from the camera and loving them too? You have made me realize little things I've never noticed since the 90s and made me love them even more (even though they've always been my fav band) so it would be really cool if all of us who love Tool this much made you love them too.
1st thank you for not editing out the content of the song
… another video where I gained perspective and I appreciate that… I’m still here
I’m still here* Lol I thoroughly enjoy your reaction videos! I haven’t found another reactor that really listens to, and recognizes, the different layers of music in a song & I just really appreciate that. 😊✌️
Being a bass player, I love your little bass mannerisms geebz
Keep being you man
"You're gunna come for me in the comments, aren't you" 🤣 nice! Love your channel and your content! ❤️
I wouldn't say I'm a huge Tool fan by any stretch but my word I love this song.
I may sound like everyone else but you seriously need to get into their other stuff, Eulogy was my fav song getting into them but then I started appreciating the other deep cuts way more, the whole Ænima album is a masterpiece
@@wafflemanofficial3130 Ænima is excellent, I agree. I also really like Undertow and Opiate, and 10,000 Days has some bangers, but the rest leave me a little cold. That said, I'm fully aware that there is a magic there and I probably just need to invest more time in them for it to click with me but there is so much more music out there to explore...
A band that doesn't get enough love on CZcams is 10 Years. I recommend them, and am curious to hear your thoughts on them.
Some tracks to star with:
'Wasteland'
'Fade into (the Ocean)'
'Silhouette of a Life'
'Minus the Machine'
'Miscelanea' + 'Moisture Residue'
'Insomnia'
'Cut the Cord'
Should give a good spread of their work. 😀
Even if you don't, I love your analysis. Keep it chill. Awright! 👍
I decided to pull a creative all-nighter in celebration of feeling really good for a while, so I'm excited to relax to your video about a song involving one of my favorite vocalists.
Thank you, again for something so chill to listen and hum along with, quietly, as I do my own creative stuff.
I always thought this one was about Bill Hicks. In the liner notes there is a picture of Bill too. They toured together in the early days. He leaves it open to interpretation too, to multiple meanings, which is what is great about Maynards lyrics. Great song, great album! :)
It was about Bill and his comedy on the inconsistencies of religion. The whole album was dedicated to him.
*Eulogy* is about, "directing to those that preach with egoism and anyone who is playing the part of the martyr for the attention, of which there have been hundreds since Christ" 😉
RIP the greatest
@@Dunn6945 no
"An Immuh" Is how it's pronounced. Good review, glad you have been checking them out, one of the biggest musical influences on me growing up.
I'm in a tool cover band and it took me months of research to figure out this songs "synth" is Maynard turning a megaphone in and off, and the "plinky" clicks at the start are Adam picking the G and B strings on the guitar BEHIND the bridge...
I really like that you've become open to reading lyrics!
Keep spiraling. I’m still here for it.
Indigo Children from V is for Versatile has Maynard in studio I highly recommend it from Pusifer
One of my favs from that performance.
Eulogy is a fantastic song that is criminally ignored by many. It’s not a song that is played live at least not in recent years. Personally I think it has some of MJK’s best vocals. Glad you reviewed it 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes! I love this song, it moves through so many sections. It was great to see you notice all the tiny details and flourishes, and I'll agree this has a more Sabbath rock quality. I'd love to see you tackle more early Tool material. Check out 4° from Undertow.
An underrated Tool classic.
Or bottom, the spoken word section from Henry Rollins
I think that the ‘your own eulogy’ line is a reference to David Miscavige’s announcement about L Ron Hubbard in 1986. It turns out that Hubbard didn’t ‘die,’ he ‘dropped his body.’ There are other L Ron Hubbard and Scientology references in the lyrics.
Talking about bringing it up with vocals, then down again and then back up again is such a great observation. I've been listening to Tool my whole life and never noticed that before! 🤟
I’m still here!! Awesome song with a great ending with his scream, gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
Man, you're the best. AllllRight.
the beeping mono synthie (your words) sound you hear is maynard through a toy megaphone into a microphone
The clicking in the beginning is Adam picking on the strings below the fret board on his les Paul
Hey Geebz! Love your work! Small question. There's this song that few have heard but it is, in my humble opinion, on of the best songs ever made. It's a redo of David Bowie's Bring me the disco king (Lohner mix). You definitely should check that out! Other artist like John Frusciante, Josh Freese and of course Maynard James Keenan were involved. A gem that flew under the radar!!
As a drummer and Tool/Danny Carey fan, you always do great reactions to their music. Thanks, Geebz!
I saw them in Tacoma, WA after concerts opened back up. Thankfully, Maynard's lungs were back to normal. He belted out the Grudge scream and it was on point. That was such a great concert, I'm hoping they go out at least one more time. I'd love to see them again and again
Ahh i missed that concert cause of inslee take a poke mandate .
@@Verifraudreports You just needed the slip saying you had tested negative. Sorry, you couldn't make it, though, Inslee is an ass
Was there too. It shocked me when he went for it and even more surprised he got through it really well. Left me jaw dropped tbh lol
Eulogy is possibly one of my favourite song from Tool- great song- greatest band!! 🤙🏻🤘🏼
Geebz reacting to Tool is one of my favorite things
So far, I haven't seen anyone mention it. If memory serves me correctly, this was written in some form or fashion about the late comedic genius, one of the greatest philosophers to ever hold a mic, Bill Hicks. I could be wrong but I'm almost certain as the last song on this record starts with an excerpt from William Melvin (Bill) Hicks himself. Making the reference of "I think drugs have done some good things". Look into Hicks if you're unfamiliar. He used to perform on the old Late Night with David Letterman show after Carson an awful lot which is how I, as a very young kid, became familiar with Bill Hicks. Keep up the most excellent work, good sir. Thoroughly enjoy your reactions, man!! 🤙🤘🥃
Will always be my fave Tool track. What a great song
It is specifically about L. Ron Hubbard, who Maynard briefly knew...
This track is about Bill Hicks
L. Ron Hubbard is only referenced in the title track.
Honestly amazes me how you can hold yourself back from just exploring their whole discography in your own time outside of reaction videos, surely the temptation is immense!? Unless of course you're just very good at acting like you've never lestened to it before, haha! I'd definitely watch a video/stream of you doing an album reaction if you ever did that one day, that'd be dope. Peace and love, brotha ✌🏻😎❤️
More Toooooool!!!
Glad to see Eulogy get it's shine.
2:33 That's it. That's the look. "I'm not smart enough to understand the musical intricacies of what I'm hearing, but I know it's awesome." Tool, ladies and gentlemen.
Don't know why this wasn't a single, because it's my favorite track from that album, and one of my top favorite Tool songs - wish they would still play it live. Your Tool reactions are by far the best and most informative. Thanks!
13:32 has always been one of my favourite Tool moments.
I know I'm ten months late for this but if you watch the live action hologram picture of cd case it slides ever so slowly up and down square. It adds to the feeling of all the tracks.
The bass is so fun in this song. This was my favorite Tool song for years being constantly on repeat during my high school age before Lateralus even came out almost 5 years after this
Have you done the Puscifer album they just released? They have a song, Bullet Train to Iowa, which is blatantly about ayahuasca.
Maynard is single handedly responsible for my awakening.
Ironically I was introduced to him by a guy named Charlie Brown, which is strange because tool and Puscifer both reference "Peanuts parents".
I'm beginning to think that life is but a cosmic joke.
He’s reacted to Bullet Train to Iowa
I'm still here Geebz!
Also the very first time I saw Tool (Seattle 2001) they played this live. The weird "synth" noises you're hearing during the intro is actually Maynard with a voicebox of some sort.
Still here and always hanging around.
The beep beep sounds in the intro is maynard on a kazoo or recorder type thing into a megaphone, then into the normal mic. He used to use 2 microphones (one in each hand) to switch between voice effects live
A kazoo? That's news to me. lol!!!
he used a little toy megaphone
Portishead also use a kazoo to great effect in a song called Threads.
This song is about the comedian Bill Hicks and the inconsistencies of religion he used for comedy. He was a good friend of Maynard before he died from cancer. In fact, the whole album was dedicated to him.
13:33 such a great, unexpected transition, then the addition of the guitar at 13:45. Just epic. I love the quieter moments like those just as much as when they let it rip.
I still claim Undertow is my favorite record. What Sylvia Massey was able to get from them was amazing. 10,000 days was recorded in the same studio, i hear. They really got into the math by Lateralus, but i sometimes miss when they were just a pissed off drop D rock band.
Undertow is massively underrated
Was so raw, still my fav as well.
This song is actually a tribute to the late great comedian Bill Hicks... The band members are huge fans of his comedy... The intro of 3rd Eye by Tool is a sample of his work.
Right and the sort of cynical sarcastic take on someone's Eulogy, both praising and berating them for all their human faults and triumphs goes right along with Bill Hick's comedy stylings. i think if he were alive to hear this song, he would've said that's it. that's fucking it exactly.
Bill Hicks is also featured in the album art... "another dead hero"
I also recall reading once that Maynard wanted to try his hand at stand up comedy and he opened up for Bill a couple times.
I didn’t know that bro thanks for the info👍🏻
it is an easy conclusion to draw (that it's about Bill) but Maynard has gone on record to say that it isn't about any one person in particular, though it could be applied to many.
Alright! Among so many greats, this is my all time favorite Tool song, and it gets overlooked so often. Thank you
Too, is godlike. You’re awesome, my decomposer man
My favorite song from this album! Looking forward to this! Love ya Geebz 💚
yep, this was my favourite Tool track prior to the Lateralus album
I love this song. So unique
One of my fave tool songs
The song that I can credit for turning me onto tool when this album came out. Beautiful. Goodbye!!!!!!!!!
I am still here! Always!
If i remember seeing this correctly a while back, this song is about "the church of scientology" and L. Ron Hubbard, or whatever his name was.
Im still here. I love Death Wish coffee. Listen to In this moment-blood. Maria Brink got pipes.
Hi Geebz! Thanks for coming back to some more Tool! (Tongue in Cheek - my favorite reactions by you). Just an FYI, the "Mono Synth" that you were talking about (~6:22 mark) is actually Maynard using a mic with modulation where he does the "Dat-Dat....Dat-Dat...Dat-Dat..." David Bottrill was the producer/engineer on this album. Stay Safe!
The very beginning "percussion" is actually a pick on the strings of an electric guitar on the right side of the bridge mic'd up
Its a special part of my day when i see you react to TooL. I prepare with a smoke then a tea (🇬🇧) and i watch a brilliant analysis of my favorite band.. Cheers man..
