I wish there was a HUD with open source software for tinkering. I'd love to integrate something like this with a dashcam and use computer vision to help warn for pedestrians and other hazards.

Marketing is all wrong. People watching have see a few other brands. This price is crazy compared to just a hud. However this isn't a hud, it's a computer interface. Big difference, nice review 👌

@@AlexAutoFun That is understandable, hence why I was trying to help :-). What Ci Z33 is saying is that they are doing a terrible job marketing this product, it is actually marketed incorrectly. Additionally, they have OVERPRICED this product by a long stretch, which is true - compared to all other HUD products out there. It's a replica of existing products, and they just got lucky with kickstarter raising money on a product they have quite literally cloned. If the other companies were in Europe or USA, there would be infringement issues for sure, but they're Chinese mass-producers who could care less. One more thing.. he stated this isn't a HUD but a computer interface, that is 100% CORRECT. A HUD is an analog, this is just a projection of what's on the phone. Those devices range between $49-$69 online... Anyway. Hope that clears it up a little. :-)

Hi everyone! looks like they recently released another firmware update, so we are now on 1.0.100 from my old 1.0.91 Unfortunately I clicked too fast on the update screen and didn't read all they added but one thing I saw is that the updated the light sensor to improve the auto-brightness on it. I will do the next update slower so I can write all the changes down and share lol

Yep! that was pretty much my experience also when I test drove my friends Corvette with a HUD. I didn't realize how useful is to have it. And it is a little hard to explain the benefits of it until you experience for yourself in real life. Thanks for watching bud!

Hi D C! nice! yeah hopefully you will get yours in time, I'm seeing more and more feedback (and downloads) on the Google App store. Since Hudway is a private company this is the closest indicator we have to production numbers. Hi Soul! I currently don't offer local installation, as I'm focused on reviews. But if what I typically seen is that installer pricing can very quite a bit depending on many factors such as: if they are licensed and insured, if they mobile or brick and mortar, if they are experienced or new, the type of vehicle (specialty or luxury vehicles typically are more), if the product is customer supplied or purchased from the vendor. So I would recommend to get a couple quotes before deciding on one. Cheers!

Interesting as I have worked on very few at the GM dealer. I was surprised it did not fill the screen edge to edge and would be nice to see rear facing camera action. I would guess the engine/vehicle info coming from the OBD-II port is “Bluetooth” or hard wired. I will look it up and see what info they provide.
Perhaps the big screen is full with the cockpit of an F-18 Raptor...Yea! Just don’t hit any RED flip cover switches. You could destroy the Kia in front of you. I wear glasses to read, but not to drive, it can see the dash clearly so it’s positions measurement from the face to screen would be info someone may like. For the OBD port yes you are correct, it uses Bluetooth (video on that coming too) I will try not to hit any red flip cover switches in the meantime! LOL thanks for watching friend! (by the way I always wanted to get my SAE cert and never did went thru with it, congrats on achieving Master tech level!)
The Master tech level or any certification last 5 years. Like a dummy, I took all 8 test in the spring or fall but instead of 60 questions on each test, 40 questions on the re-certification test. It last five years and I have kept all mine by going back in 5 years, sometime 6. They don’t take it away. If you are current in all 8 test, you are allowed to take “L1” advanced emissions. It is 100 questions and I missed one. I passed “P2” and “B2” for parts & body/paint. But you have to have 2 years of actual work experience with a letter from the manager.
There is only 5 types of questions so Master them and learn how to read in a test book and you can take pay & take 1 or 8 test. It is draining for one night but I don’t have to take them anymore. Not bad for a farm kid who never went to trade school and high school didn’t even have shop!

You're welcome jon! ah regarding direction of travel and cost, no by default it does no unless you use the mirroring function and use it with an App like Waze or Google Maps. Looks good. Is there any reflection on the inside of the windshield and not just the HUD reflector screen? I noticed in certain cars and how the windshield is angled, the HUD may reflect on the windshield and the HID reflector giving off an awkward double image. Did this happen for you?
Hi xdejablu3x! Nope I haven't noticed any reflection from the windshield, the projection seems to be limited to the HUD screen. Maybe if the HUD is place really close to the windshield, it may pick up some reflection but where I have mine is quite far from it, I will experiment more on this with the next HUD I'm reviewing to see if moving it closer the windshield will make a double reflection. Why is the display so bad when the sun is out. Also are we supposed to remove the white covering on the projector ?
When i use it for navigation all i can see is turn left turn right and the white outline around it. Isnt it supposed to be like a regular navigation wher ewe can see the road etc

Does the app have to be active for the display to work? Put differently, could I be playing a game on my iPhone with the HuD still receiving data while the app is active in the background?

If I decide to take it off do you think the tape will ruin my dash? I might get a dash mat actually maybe I can zip tie it to that. I'm trying to save my dash as its mint and a rare find in a car like this. They're always cracked or nasty when you see other dashes.
Hi tubeyourself! The tape on the first generation base is not as strong as the tape on the new bases shipping out (mine was the original base) that being said while the original tape allows it to come off easier, it is still going to attach pretty strong, and depending on how long it has been on there the harder it is to remove. I really like your idea of attaching it to a mat something like this would be more gentle on the dash amzn.to/2YE5hFK (at the expense of some additional vibration since the it holds less but IMO a worthwhile tradeoff) Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
Cleanest one I have seen. Hopefully someone will develop one that has the legal speed limit on the right and the speed you are going in the middle. That is what keep speed in check. Can’t always find a speed limit sign.

Actually now that I think about it, if you use Waze (using the mirror function of the HUD) you get your current speed but also and indicator when you go over the speed, I'm not sure if Google Maps or if Maps for Apple does same but I really like Waze in case you want to try it out. Hi Jean-Marc! I just use the mirror option in the HUDWAY drive app and it starts to mirror regardless of the screen orientation. I use mine with a Samsung A20 if it helps, I know some phone are finicky with mirroring. I would also try another phone to see if it's an issue related to the phone or the app setup. And please let us know if you figure it out bud!

So what have you done to "hide" the power cable for this HUD device?
Hi pHD77! take a look at aprox the 2:35 mark where i cover installation, the HUD came with this little plastic clips with double sided tape to attach the cable to the dash but I just ran mine along the seams and edges of the Corolla dash so it blends in a little. Would definitely not recommend watching movies when driving LOL! but somehow I can see this becoming a normal practice as cars get closer to full autonomy with probably Tesla being closer to this goal..

I think you should add the infrared camera and give an honest review of that. It's expensive, but it's cheaper than other independent infrared camera set ups.

I bought a different hud and after a short time, it was dim and almost impossible to read. How does it function after having it a while? Is it just as bright as when you first installed it?
Hi Robert! yes the screen has not lost any brightness, it's same as when I first installed it. Some LCD panels do loose brightness over time depending on the quality of the screen, so far this is holding good but will update you guys if I see any changes. Hi kelly! yes you should be able to pretty much mirror any App on your phone to the Hudway using the mirror function (I mirrored the Waze app and the media player App from my phone as an example but so far I tested several apps and they all seem to mirror pretty good!)..
Question: can you simultaneously run HUDWAY DRIVE when your phone is connected to Android Auto/CarPlay?

Hi Jordan! yeah I think that we are going to see more and more HUDs on cars standard from factory or at least as an option. I remember when the Navdy came out a few years ago, I wanted one but at $799 it was out of my budget and now we have the Hudway Drive at half that price, so I can definitely see the technology getting cheaper and better with time. Question: how is the display in the bright sunlight? If the sun is hitting the dash (straight down or in front of you) is the display still visible?
Hi John! the brightness is pretty much close to what you see on the video, I'm able to see it well during bright sunlight but I do have to say that it really shines at evening and night, that's when you can really feel the colors and the fine details. It reminds me of a spaceship display like in the movies. I have driven straight in the direction of the sun (super bright day the ones that make you bring the sun visor down) and yes in that case the HUD is not as visible as the brightness of the sun overpowers it. Does this show the speed limit of the road your driving on (UK)
Hi Franck! it does not, however there are 2 ways you can make it show it, one would be to use the mirror function so you can display Waze or Maps which do have the speed limit. The other way would be to submit that feature request using the app button for submitting requests, I imagine if enough people ask for that feature they may add it in the next update. Hi Partha! Good question, no they HUD will not project the Android Auto screen on the HUD. Remember when plug your phone into an Android Auto enabled vehicle, the car's infotainment screen is the one that displays Android Auto, the phone its self does not display the Android Auto screen. So if you are using Android Auto for directions, you wont see those on the HUD. The HUD can only mirror what you display on your phone. Maybe later Android Auto can add support to work together with the Hudway drive, that would be be pretty cool. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@@parthaganguly4793 Hi Partha! no worries man, yes on my phone (Android) I'm able to run the Hudway Drive (the app runs in the background) while also using Android Auto. However I do remember the previous version of Android Auto used to lock my phone out of running other apps while connected, so assuming your phone and your car android versions are up to date you should be able to. However remember the navigation mode on the Hudway drive is different from Waze, it's is own thing. The way I got Waze to run on mine was to use the mirror function where the HUD just mirrors whatever app you are running on the phone at the time. Hope that make sense bud!

I've seen this device online and I even emailed the company and never heard back from them, but this HUD System seems to take the adapter for power via a cigarette input, most newer vehicles DO NOT HAVE THIS, so will it get power via just a USB port in the Vehicle and not using the device that plugs into a cigarette lighter port?? - How long is the power cable from the unit to the USB port? also how will the little screen hold up under intense heat from the sun beating down on the dash of your vehicle during the summer seasons? Hi Eric! That is correct, they included a cigarette adapter for people who do not have a USB port on their cars. Since I have a USB port on my car I did not use the cigarette plug adapter. Regarding the length of the power cable, I was able to route mine over the dash, around the A Pillar and under the dash again until it made it to my USB port so I would say maybe about 6 feet long. However if you need a longer cable you could use one of this amzn.to/3cuGSXp As far as heat in summer season, I would recommend using a sunshade, I always use one to protect not only my dash but also my dashcam (here in California we get some very hot days), while most electronic devices can sustain high temperatures their life span can be improved by protecting them from unnecessary heat. It has speed, direction, distance, time, voltage, and an over speed alarm..
Head up Displays are great, cops recommend them. Just don't buy into hype.

I got it off Amazon. The only thing I found was a HUD that's identical as far as looks and function but only in blue and white colors. Mine says "Pyle" on it and I don't see it in their catalog.
Look for L-1 at least that's what the blue and white one.
My car is not OBD so I can't use a Hudway.

On their website i see it shows speed limit. But i dont see it in your video. Does it show speed limit? If i type directions on my Google maps on my phone. Does it automatically know turn by turn inside heads up display? How exactly does that integrate?
Hi A.S! Correct, there has been several App updates and Firmware updates to the Hudway Drive since this review. Regarding Google Maps, you can use the built in navigation in the App or use Google Maps or Waze or another App using the mirroring feature (as shown on this video). Nice review, thank you. The form factor of the unit is large enough to clutter the top of the dash. Too bad they did not flatten out that big bulky projector or relocate most of the electronics to a remote location and just left the sensor, projector, and screen on top of the dash.

@@AlexAutoFun .. Have you tried tinting your windscreen with a ceramic or nano ceramic tint? That cuts heat significantly.. The nano ceramic cuts heat even more than the ceramic. I put llumar air 80 (ceramic) you can't tell it's there. Since I put that up, my dashcam isn't as hot in direct sun. And I live in the tropics..

I have applied ceramic to my car's paint but I haven't heard of ceramic tint for the windshield interesting, is it actual tint? here in California there are super restrictive on it, front windshield is a big no no, and for some reason they been enforcing that hard around my area ugh (not to mention their random checkpoints for Smog inspection and exhaust loudness) they joys of living in California LOL..

Hi , Thanks for the detailed video. One question around mirroring. How do you keep the Device connected to Mobile Data when its using Hudway WiFi? The internet connectivity goes off for me and I am unable to navigate using Waze etc. Any guidance would be really helpful.
Hi Go Adi! My phone keeps connected to mobile data since that is a separate transmitter/receiver (4G) than the Wifi. So the internet comes from the Phone's connection with my service provider and the Hudway gets the Wifi from my phone. Hi Mohamand! yes you can change it to KM in the app. Regarding the connection, it only need to be connected to power (usb or cigarette lighter plug) and your phone that has the App. The internet would only be required if you are trying to get directions since it's like google maps or waze. What is the difference between this device and placing my phone on the dashboard? You still have to look DOWN and away from the road to look at the information.

It is true, but at 3:04 it shows the driver's viewpoint. When looking through the display one would see the dashboard or the hood of the car, not the road. So even if the glass was not transparent it would not block the view of the road.
@@nikolaosberatlis3942 Hi Nikolaos! the view at 3:04 mark was shot with my Canon SL2 at about chin level so I could see while driving, the clear portion is adjustable to adjust to match your height so the display will be show over the road. But I do think this will vary from car to car, I know on some cars the seat height is adjustable so you can get the best view but on some cars the seat height it set limiting how much you can adjust your view if your too tall or too short..

@@SidharthMehtamanpower correct it's normal 5v USB power. You can hardwire it with a normal hardwire kit but the HUD will stay on continuously, maybe they can add the ability to turn it off manually when hardwired or better yet release a hardwire kit specific for the Hudway Drive..
