also we love a beauty school dropout. i ended up quitting because my haircuts always came out asymmetrical thanks to my one blind eye. turns out having equal or close to equal left-right vision is pretty important for cutting hair :( lol

I’ve seen vintage looks done with curling irons. After heating, they roll up the curl and pin it to save the curl while the hair cools.
This! Pin curls are the move. Flat/duck bill clips are the best. It’ll help you keep things sectioned as if you’re doing a roller set anyway. Also, stick to a small barrel (I use one inch) with the idea you never wanna do a section wider than the barrel. Although if we’re being honest, I prefer a roller set too. 👀

I do the Vaseline/aquaphor trick on my actual hairline, ears and base of the neck when I dye my hair. It saves me from getting stains when I’m using fashion colors.

Watching James, as I sit here with semi-perm dye (violet) on my head. I"m 60 yrs old, and have literally had my hair professionally dyed twice. Sorry, I can do it cheaper and quicker. Thankfully I have a buzz cut, so it's easy peasy.
For your next dye job, use manic panic. They don't smell like bad chemicals and the color last a while. It also conditions the hair while dyeing.
Also a lot of the colors glow under black light, which would look cool in the club

Asuka had a video on her channel of her getting her hair colored and she bought Iroiro from Sally's and her stylist used that on her. I've used that brand before and it's a great formula (one step/no need to mix with developer), comes in an easy to dispense soft pouch (so minimal waste, you get to squeeze out as much product as possible), and the colors are super vibrant! I would still love a wrestling wig series ever since you mentioned Kenny Omega in the Grease wig re-do!

The final result was very nice! The colors came out so pretty, very vibrant.
I find the easiest way to get a vintage style with a curling iron is to pin the curl as soon as it comes off the barrel and let it cool. The curls last longer too.
You can get a vintage look with a curling iron. Pin up palmer has a tutorial. You would curl it and pin it into shape. Then cool and brush out. I would recommend a 1/2in barrel...I think.. for sure a smaller barrel. Those are the tips I have picked up.

YAS ma’am! Also for using the curling iron to get those vintage curls/waves - use the curling iron like your rollers! Same concept, make sure the entire section of hair (roots to ends) is rolled on top of itself doing a barrel curl and pin it like you would if it was around a roller and let it cool! 😍

Late to this party and I’m probably just echoing other opinions here, but! Here’s how *I* get a vintage look with a curling iron:
1: Use a small barrel, on a hot setting if the hair can handle it. Curls tend to loosen a lot on human hair. I use a 7/8” because my hair doesn’t hold a curl easily, but on processed hair I’m guessing a 1” is probably best.
2: Take the curling iron all the way to the ends of the hair. Yes, this is *very* damaging but it looks way too modern otherwise. It’s most important that the ends stay curled! Even if it loosens up through the shaft it still looks cute- I love doing a Barbie ponytail on second-day hair!
3: Pin up each curl as you work, ideally with pin curl clips, because bobby pins tend to leave a crease. And spray the heck out of it. I use Aussie brand Instant Freeze, which is not as strong as the yellow can but I wouldn’t call it a wet spray either. Let it cool completely before taking it down.
And that’s it! Hope that helps. I’m not a professional stylist but I’ve been doing vintage styles on myself for over 10 years and that’s my favorite way to do it.

Jaymes, may I suggest the permanent marker and alcohol spray color method? You take a spray bottle, some medical alcohol and permanent marker. Extract that tubes out of markers split them open put in a spray bottle filled with alcohol. Let soak. In an outside area hose the area of hair with colors of choice. Best part is if you run out just refill and pop in one or two more cut open tubes from the marker. Let it all dry and set in for 24 hours or longer. Wash with Luke warm water with conditioner until water runs clear. Dry and style. Be sure to use Vaseline on lace and wear gloves.

10.05 You can wear a 😷 paper style face mask to help prevent fume inhalation...I put a little drop of any essential oil I have lying round on it or a dab of vanilla essence from the kitchen cupboard even (I like to bake lol) on mine when I dye peoples hair with a box dye. Especially when it’s bleach based as the peroxide and ammonia smell-horrid 🤢! Anyway I hope this helps Jaymes/anyone else scrolling the comments section 😊
