    Welcome aboard, John & Lulu. (Haven't you two reacted to Band-Maid before?) Anyway, you are embarking on (along with many others - over 171 million YT views plus over 40 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

    BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (125 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
    Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
    Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: czcams.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/video.html Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
    But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): czcams.com/video/7LB_EPS48HE/video.html)
    And many songs are represented with nearly 50 well produced music videos. czcams.com/users/BANDMAID
    Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html
     Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” czcams.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/video.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” czcams.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/video.html
     Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and other full concerts are on bandmaidprime.tokyo, bili, and official Band-Maid’s DVD/BD/CD.
     “P and D²” 30+ Photo Collage videos at www.youtube.com/@PinD2/videos
    And some of the better quality fan videos are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:
     By Wave Potter with their last 2022 US tour OKYU-JI concert in Chicago: czcams.com/video/R9BcFwZz3cc/video.html
     By Vladimir Chupin - a wealth of excellent videos at www.youtube.com/@VladimirChupin
    If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
    Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
    For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
    Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 29 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
    Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
    Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
    Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
    MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
    Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
     BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the Acoustic Christmas 2021, ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo

Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. And their opening for Guns and Roses, The Last Rockstars, and their sold out 8,000 seat Garden Theater concerts were huge successes. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!!

    Baby Metal is the only one who has the title of Kawaii metal. The record company that made this concept of cute girls that are dancers and sing with a backup band was a concept made by them. Band Maid on the other hand is a true Hard Rock band with all members who are virtuoso musicians that actually write and play actual instruments. This is a very special band that is breaking thru all stereotypes of conventional one dimensional music. This is a band full of genres within the rock metal pop and punk genres. They are all that . But not Kawaii metal. Great reaction! First time seeing you. Keep up the good work 👍

    • @Parker--
      @Parker-- Před rokem +10

      There are other bands that could definitely be argued that are kawaii metal, but you are absolutely right in that Band-Maid is definitely _NOT_ one of them. While the positive energy is infectious, nothing about Band-Maid's music is about the contrast between cutesy, nursery rhyme vocal melodies and heavy metal. Whereas Kawaii metal is built on the discordance between two opposing genres on opposite ends of the spectrum mashed together, Band-Maid is about blending genres together into a cohesive blend of whichever subgenres of rock, punk, pop, and metal they decide to dabble in for that song. Any combination of those four genres has a Band-Maid song. The diversity in music of Band-Maid rivals bands like Queen or the Beatles, not their contemporaries.
      Best band this century.

      @@Parker-- Probably the best known examples of Kawaii metal, apart from Babymetal, are Ladybaby and their various offshoots, like Ladybeard. Some people also try to call Hanabie kawaii metal, though I don't agree with that.

    • @joliquidflow2296
      @joliquidflow2296 Před rokem +2

      @@Parker-- Kawaii metal is a made concept by the record company and the marketing group that created baby metal and afterwards trained the girls to explain what this concept is to the reporters so it would be a thing associated with this band specifically .Some people might use this as a way to get to encapsulate other acts in this brand new made genre by this record company. I guess they have made this kawaii metal thing mainstream. That’s the power of concept creation and millions $ . Now apparently other bands get caught being called as so.

    Band Maid plays their own instruments and write their own music. All their songs are different and there is not a single bad one. The more you listen to them the more you'll realize how good they really are and the huge amounts of genre they cover. Best rock band on the planet.

      They wrote their own music for the last three albums and the Unleash EP. The first three albums, however, were mostly written by outside writers. The difference between what they wrote themselves and what was written for them is pretty noticeable, as their own material tends to be a lot more complex.

    If you liked "Domination", just be aware that it's just the tip of a HUGE ICEBERG. Most Band-Maid songs orbit around the genre of hard rock, but include influences from pop, punk, prog, metal, jazz, show tunes, anime, and classical music. You never know what you're getting when you hear a Band-Maid song for the first time. Chase Cameron describes it as "Band-Maid doing what Band-Maid does."
    They now write, arrange, and produce their own music, but in their early days they played what their label told them to play whether they liked it or not. In those days the Maids would rent a van, load their equipment, drive to the gig, unload and set up, play the gig, strike set, pack up the van, and drive to the next gig, all by themselves, no road crew. They were never a 'Put-Up' band.
    Band-Maid is primarily a live act and their live performances are outstanding, with charismatic audience engagement. They often write new arrangements of their songs: I've lost count of how many versions of "Puzzle" I have heard. They just released a new live version of "Puzzle" from their Tokyo Garden Theater concert and it's a barn burner. Crank it up because it ROCKS HARD!

  • @kicorse
    @kicorse Před rokem +7

    The song is indeed called Domination. You're right that the title isn't used in the lyrics - instead it conveys the mood of the song. The band asked their lead guitarist (Kanami Tono) to write the music with the image of "world domination", which is also the band's slogan.
    For most Band-Maid fans, the appeal is overwhelmingly the music itself. I personally almost refused to listen to them at first because I hate gimmicks, and they are now my favourite band. I am far from unusual in this. As you noticed, they are outstanding musicians, but it's really the songwriting where they are raising the bar not just for women in music, but for music more generally.
    Hope you listen to more. You can't go wrong with any of their official videos, but they released one (Puzzle, live) last week, so that could be a good option.

BAND-MAID have many songs including acoustic versions and even different bands like Band Maiko and Cluppo. Japan have really good rock and metal band from the 80th, and also a lot of female bands. The oldest still active must be Show-ya, founded in 1981 and still active. About the same time you have a punk-rock band like Shonen Knife.
    The modern rock and metal scene in all-female bands is really big, and Band Maid is more in the hard rock alley. If wanna see heavy metal with women, they have a lot of bands.
    The mentioned Show-Ya and a lot more recently like Nemophila, Lovebites (they sing in engligh), Aldious, Mary´s Blood and a lot more.
    Also have some unconventional rock bands like Scandal, really popular and big in Japan. And of course Gacharic spin, a band who in their concerts looks like they drink a gallon of red bull. Most energetic band ever.
    Of course there´s also a lot of male band, bands with boys and girls... true real bands, no the ones made by record labels.
    But Japan have a huge internal market (second of the world) and they bands sing in japanese. That´s becouse a lot of them aren´t well know outside Japan.

    BAND-MAID are not Kawii Metal. They consider themselves to be Hard Rock, though Metal is among their many influences. The tour was named after the song, 'Domination', which is the band's stated goal, World Domination. Try either 'Freedom' LIVE from this same concert, it has a drum solo, or 'Real Existence' LIVE from an earlier concert for a little contrast.

    Only to mention the two who just came in my mind "Nemophila" and "Lovebites" both are more Metal than Rock.

    No, no, no! Band-Maid is not kawaii metal, they are a legit rock band. And if you do some background work you’ll discover it’s not a silly concept. Miku, the founder of the band, worked in a Maid cafe and came up with the idea of the juxtaposition of the maid look with hard rock. It’s more than “clever” actually! Most people get that so who is really not that clever? You should be careful what you say! For this I am hesitant to give a thumbs up, as I have on your other videos.
    I’m sure others in the comment section will give you the entire history of the band. Band-Maidiacs are a passionate group.
    I am happy you’ve discovered Band-Maid and there are a host of other all female rock and metal bands from Japan. Lovebites, Nemophila, Trinity, Aldious, Bridear, Scandal and more.
    Also, there are a lot of great songs by Band-Maid, too many to mention here. Look forward to more reaction videos, without the “not very clever” comment. 😉

      I think he was just saying he didn't think the name was clever, not that the concept wasn't clever. Of course, when you notice that one of their logo designs looks like a band-aid, it becomes even more clever.

      @@garykeeling2275 well, I agree with you. But I think before making any judgement like he did before understanding where the name and concept comes from is not “clever” either lol! 😁

      And they are the top rock band on the planet and have fans on every continent, and if aliens are listening, fans in outer space. I've seen them twice, and if you can you should see them too. I'm 76 and a rocker from the late 1950's and they are the best I've seen in 25+ years. Their fans are the most important thing to them and all of us Maidiacs love them for it. They have no equal at present. And if you don't want a squeaky voice, check out Glim Spanky another hard rock duo who are amazing, and singer Hiroki Kamemoto is Japan's Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. Welcome to the wonderfully wacky world of Band Maid, amazing music and a great floor show.

    There is no such a thing as Kawaii metal beside Babymetal and even still it's only in the west that this term is used not even in Japan, just because it's a band made of girls from japan doesn't mean it is "kawaii"

    • @garykeeling2275
      @garykeeling2275 Před rokem

      Not entirely true. Ladybaby and a few others are also considered "kawaii metal," though you are correct that Band-Maid is not. And the term was coined in Japan, not in the West, by Koba-metal specifically to describe the new genre he envisioned when he came up with the Babymetal idea. The very name Babymetal is also a reference to the genre, as it was a newborn genre, but he needed to come up with a separate name for the genre to distinguish it from the name of the group, and "kawaii metal" was what he chose.

    • @jonasw3945
      @jonasw3945 Před rokem +1

      @@garykeeling2275 Ladybaby is a gimmick band, and the one who formed it is not a japanese guy lol. Literally no other band consider themselves kawaii metal. The term was used once by babymetal and it stuck in the west as a "genre" when in Japan it's just called an idol group, or idol metal and when they refer to their genres they actually mention real metal genres such as powe metal, metalcore, etc... Babymetal is just a jpop idol metal group, the "kawaii" thing doesn't mean anything and was just a marketing strategy for the west

    • @garykeeling2275
      @garykeeling2275 Před rokem

      @@jonasw3945 Whether or not they are or were a gimmick band has nothing to do with whether or not they fit their genre label. There are tons of "gimmick bands" out there, but they are still labeled as whatever genre they play in. Babymetal was also widely considered a gimmick band (and still are by many). Doesn't make a difference. And you're more than welcome to hold the opinion that "kawaii metal" is not a genre and that it is only used by Westerners, but that opinion is simply objectively incorrect. It is not a term that was used loosely one time then thrown away. It was a termed that has a specific definition, for the purpose of naming the newly-created genre (it doesn't refer simply to anything that seems "cute" in metal, it has a specific definition). It was actively promoted by Koba as the name of his new genre, and is still in use today both in Japan and in the West. You might not be personally aware of it being used, but unless you live in Japan and are actively involved in the music and marketing industry there, then your personal awareness or lack thereof is not really defining. That it is in use and defines a specific genre are objective facts, your opinion notwithstanding.
