In the so cal area, (pasadena,ca) what strengthening programs or gyms can you recommend my 12u son to start this summer? we also didnt make the all-star team this year, because of daddy ball. He is has been practicing as a catcher for over a year, but didnt get a lot of playing time in rec ball or travel ball. His catching coach has given him a daily routine of stretching & pylometrics. what do recommend he do at home like cole did with the fielding aspect of practice for catching? He is going to start the whiffle ball this week for hitting. Thanks coach beede in advance for any advice you can give.!

Hello and thank you for your feedback and for sharing your experience. I would recommend getting your son a movement screen from any PT or ortho first. Many great baseball strength programs now offer remote training programs for young baseball athletes. themoffittmethod.fit, cresseyperformance.com/ . Reach out to either of these companies and mention my name. As far as a good training drill for a catcher, get a bucket of tennis balls and use any wall available. Have your son get in his crouch facing the wall and you stand behind him. You toss the ball off the wall and have your son receive the ball off the wall. It will take some time and may be frustrating at first. I will gladly send you a video of the drill if you would like.

My goodness, you just about described my Son at 10 and 11. He struggled at 11. His break through was at 12 and he now has the muscle tone of a 16 year old at 13.

Andrew thank you for sharing your experience. Many families need to understand the benefits for athletes 12-15 to learn about training their bodies, nutrition, sleep, etc. If athletes prepared for what is ahead, they would be able to compete at those higher levels after middle school.

This video is awesome! My neighbors hated me growing up because I used to hit acorns all over the neighborhood with a broom stick. Cole is going to be great because he has passion for the game. That's the first step to being great at a craft. You can't teach passion!

Matt, Thank you for your thoughts. You are so SPOT ON with your comment " You can't teach passion!" It is truly THE FOUNDATION of any good/great athlete!

Baseball does not provide a true blue print. Everyone can participate at their own pace. It's fun. It's a kids game. I was fortunate to make it to DIII. Then the game taught me humility. I played until my late 30's. Still my favorite game and thankful for the lifetime friendships. I don't drop names.

I feel this dad took it too seriously. He should have gotten his kid into other sports. This way the kid would be developing as an athlete while playing soccer/football/basketball.
It also takes pressure off the kid and dad to be so hyper focused on baseball. Most of the MLB guys played multiple sports.

I agree ☝️! Allowing kids to be kids is what it’s all about . As teens enter sophomore year of high school, they begin to figure out what they want out of athletics and academics.
