My Father and uncles went to WW2 leaving from that station and returning home from the war there as well. My Grandfather left out of the station at Prestonsburg for WW1 I need to get there and take photos and measure the station to build a model of it soon thank you for sharing.
I’m glad I found your channel. It’s sad to see these old yards in the mountains become grave yards. I really wish the eastern KY coal industry would pick up.
Great video! Of course, I'm not from the eastern Ky area, so not all that familiar with the Big Sandy [but I am trying to learn], and I had no idea about the size of the Paintsville yard. It surprised me that it is that big. I'll bet at one time in the coal boom era, it was a thriving yard. Very sad to see that nowadays, it is merely a storage yard, and equally sad to see all those idle coal hoppers. I long for the day that the coal business will be robust again, but don't know whether I'll ever get to see that or not. Anyway, thanks for covering this! You did a great job and I learned a lot!
in eastern kentucky rail is heavily dependant on the coal industry. the *partial* saving grace for the big sandy is the occasional thru traffic from the clinchfield to ashland.. same cant be said for the EKY or the Cumberland valley subdivisions of csx
Something just don't look right, mines screaming for empties, and places like Paintsville Dante Logan sidings full of MTYS, no power no people? Maybe iam missing something.
sad video: the coal industry is a dying industry; coal is a dirty fossil fuel, being replaced by natural gas and renewable energy sources; my grandfather was an engineer for C&O and L&N; coal powered our industrial revelution
Thank you for these videos! My dad a retired railroader from Shelby yard enjoys these so much.
That’s awesome! Thank yall for watching
Nice drone video and commentary- thanks for that

I have some pictures of the station I'll post on the community page soon. It would be a great station to model.
Excellent work my friend. You’re one of my favorite channels.

That was so awesome.

@@eastkentuckyrailfanYour welcome.
I lived on the right between the yard and the river across the yard from the station ,left in 1969
I remember when those houses use to be there

Yea the Big Sandy is seeing more trains now than anytime in recent years.
This must be one of the locations of the 2002 accident.
