Why The European Premier League Would Be Great For Football

  • There is talk of Premier League titans like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Manchester City, along with fellow European giants like Real Madrid and Juventus, forming a European Premier League made up of 18 teams that would run alongside their domestic campaigns.
It isn't the first time a European Super League has been floated, but it is the most serious proposals yet. Whilst the competition would initially rival the UEFA Champions League, and is backed by FIFA, eventually it could replace domestic leagues altogether.
Understandably, many people have been outraged by these suggestion to overhaul European football / soccer, just as they were with Project Big Picture, but in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at why a breakaway super league made up of the continents biggest clubs could actually benefit the sport in the long run.

Super league is indefensible - it’s an insult to football history, heritage and the fans
Fairy tale stories of Leicester and Montpellier winning the league will never happen again.
Exciting fixtures like Barca vs Juve will become run of the mill - the excitement will disappear and the big clubs will end up losing many fans which could make the super league fall below self-sufficient in the first place - it would take time but if this happens I’d lose all interest in football - it’s a business but I hoped for the longest time it was a business with soul but evidently not
I hate the idea *so much* that despite being a lifelong Liverpool fan (with Brentford as my local), I would simply support Brentford and drop Liverpool depending on how soulless the sport/club and culture becomes. I am definitely not alone in this.

    • @HITCSevens
      @HITCSevens  Před 3 lety +76

Hi Tom, obviously if you watched it all and still disagree that's fine, not suggesting everyone should agree with me, just think the majority of those commenting/disliking haven't actually watched the video and are making some inaccurate assumptions about what my position actually is.
From your comment, it would seem you agree with me on everything, with the exception that you think it's failure would ruin football for you, and I think in the right circumstances it's failure could save it.
(Responding to your edit): That's exactly my point, more people supporting their local club, like you with Brentford, rather than a behemoth like Liverpool, would be a good thing. That's exactly what I'd want to happen in an ideal scenario.

You have got such an English look on this subject Alfie, this competition will destroy the possibility of Portuguese, Dutch, Ukrainian, Scottish and more domestic top clubs who haven't got much competition in their own countries being able to play many competitive/exciting games.
Furthermore, this will lead to an even greater exodus of talented players from these Leagues. Finally, the possibility of special things like Porto winning the biggest European competition or Ajax beating Real Madrid and Juventus won't be happening again.
This is just my opinion and foresight on what a European Premier League would cause.

@@hasekfan2450 Well it has happened before. All of the "Dirty Dozen" clubs have had barren spells, either in Europe and most domestically in the past.
For example, prior to Man City and Chelsea gaining their billionaire sugar daddies, the grand total of English League Titles won by Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham COMBINED, was just 5! (Man City 1 Title, Chelsea 1 and Tottenham 2, and still just 2!). By comparison Everton (9 Titles), Aston Villa (7) and even Sunderland (6), had all won more Titles than those 3 "elite" always been at the top "Big Six" clubs COMBINED! Also how many of the "Big Six" have been relegated since the mid 1970's? Surely none, as they have always been the big clubs! Try 4 of them! (Man United, Tottenham and, especially Chelsea and Man City (who even had a season in the 3rd flight in 1999!)) In fact here are some of the relatively recent League Title free spells all of the Big Six have had! Liverpool 30 years (1990 to 2020), Man City 44 years (1968 to 2012), Man United 26 years (1967 to 1993), Chelsea 50 years (1955 to 2005) Arsenal 18 years (1971 to 1989) and last and by every means least, Tottenham 61 years and counting (1961 to the present!)
Also, how many La Ligia Titles do you think that Barca won in the three decades, after 1960 and prior to 1991? Must be around 15 right? well try the real answer of just 2! (In 1974 and 1985!)
If any of the rich sugar daddies who subsidize those clubs abandon them (which has happened to others in the past!), or the obscene debts some have built up in order to buy success, comes back to haunt them, they may no longer be at the top. Just as, if some billionaire bought over the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds, or West Ham, they could just as easily find themselves dining at the top table of football! (Since the English top flight became the Premier League, Newcastle have already had more Top 3 finishes than Tottenham, even if their ones have been less recent!)

Guus van Leeuwen explained it perfectly in the comments above. It may help English football in the long run, but what about the other European countries outside of the traditional big leagues? What about Croatia, Scotland, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, etc? What about the other remaining countries in Europe? What about the other 30 odd countries, who will never get a chance to grace the competition? This will completely rule out any competition in the sport that is football! Many of the investors will just completely lose any interest in the clubs outside the big leagues, which in turn will make the production of any top-class footballers/ the emergence of competitive teams from those countries nearly impossible. This will only enlarge the gap between the richest and everyone else, thus making football less and less competitive overall.

I'm quite happy to hear a view of the Super League that isn't just opposing the idea, it gives me a different perspective on looking at the potential benefits
but I still massively disagree the idea of the Super League.
Sure in today's game it's usually, say, the top 6 EPL teams that succeed, but it's great to see underdogs in theory having a chance to win the PL. Same thing can be said about the UEFA Champions League, how the elite teams are often the ones that are in the tournament, but again, at least there is a path for everyone, that you have to EARN your spot in (to which in theory anyone can get in)
The Super League would just further divide teams up, and maybe that can allow people to root for their local sides, but my hypothesis would be that: people would ONLY look at the Super League & a young aspiring footballer's ultimate dream is to reach the quality of the Super League, it would make any other league irrelevant to the casual I unfortunately think
and if you're not from a top 5 leagues team, good luck! If you're a Benfica, (maybe) an Ajax, a Porto, a Shakhtar, an APOEL, a Celtic, whatever, they would likely suffer from a Super League, and obviously UEFA would suffer as well
There are a lot of things flawed things in football, but the Super League just doesn't solve things imo, just maybe in the top 5 leagues smaller teams might benefit (but idrk tbh), it can just further widen the gap between the giant teams & the small clubs

I’m from Mexico, more specifically from Monterrey city. Here we have two rival clubs. Monterrey FC and Tigres UANL. Monterrey FC has become the borguois club, with a new stadium and rising ticket prices, so that has been driving real and thriving football fans out of the field and leaving only the wealthy fans beeing able to purchase the tickets. Those circumstances have been leading to the Monterrey FC stadium beeing half empty for the last few seasons (before the pandemic) but the owners don’t seem to be taking the hint of what they’re doing wrong.

Considering the amount of quality football players and clubs in the world I think there would still be amazing football without needing to watch the super league and we could all go on watching that while the super league crashes and burns. That being said, I'd rather they just didn't even try.

Folks are tuning in regardless. If they’re truly loyal to their team. Many act like the squad has say, it’s the board that holds final say. In the end, it’s a money transaction for these people in power. Greed can be a disease if you allow it. Issue with ownership is that once they get more, they want more. It’d be dope if they simply created the ‘Super League’ as just another major competition minus the breakaway. They could’ve worked that out. It’s the “breakaway” that’s devastating the world. Perhaps the breakaway aspect’s to maximize profits. Hence it being a part of the deal of joining this new league in the first place.

I think one idea for reform is to have countries uniting to form united leagues, like Holland and Belgium are currently discussing, or unite Scandinavian countries, a bit like the old Soviet league with all the different republic’s’ teams competing, or even what we have already with Welsh clubs competing in England. Something like that could quite possibly enable clubs like Ajax to retain their best players. One fundamental problem is the fact that your potential for success as a club is essentially largely defined by the size and population of your own country, so a lot of inequality is largely down to geography

One thing I am still unsure of is if the Super League did go ahead, which competition would the clubs be leaving. If it is the Champions League and they were to stay in the top flight domestic leagues, would'nt the finances for exmple, from the Premier League still trickle down to the lower leagues as is does today? If this is the case, then I think the only injured party would be UEFA, meh. Or am I missing something?
