Has The Premier League BROKEN The Transfer Market?

  • This summer, newly-promoted Nottingham Forest have had a higher net spend than every La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 team combined, and the Premier League as a whole has outspent its nearest competitors, La Liga, by a ratio of 8:1.
Not only can clubs outside of the Premier League no longer compete with the division's spending power, many leagues are now dependent upon Premier League teams signing their best players for huge transfer fees just to remain competitive.
So in light of the recent signings of Casemiro by Manchester United and Alexander Isak by Newcastle United, HITC Sevens takes a look at the finances of the Premier League compared with Europe's other top leagues, the growing disparity between them, and asks the question as to whether the top flight of English football has finally broken the transfer market.

Take Ajax who potentially will make more money selling two players to Manchester United than they did all of last season. It will get to the point where even leagues outside the top 5 will struggle to ever hold on to a decent player effecting them long term in performing well in Europe. The thing that we often forget is the the Premier League is mostly Ebglish speaking and English becoming everyone's second language (at least in Europe, East Asia, and the Gulf States) means that the people who have the money to support teams financially eventually end up in England. If you have to learn German to properly follow Dortmund, you probably wouldn't do it even if learning the language might come in handy outside of football, but if you learned English for 10 years in school and the majority of media you consume is in English, consuming football in English isn't even a stretch. Yes, every big club and league also has English social media accounts and English speaking players, but that's not the same as watching Salah's interviews without a translator.

The technical ability of the average Spanish player is amazing but not so for the average English player where we have to rely on better physical attributes

Except Villarreal and Frankfurt had to have finished in the top 6 minimum to have even been in the competition in the first place, i.e. not mid-table (cup wins obviously get them there as well, but both countries almost always have the same few teams winning them, just like any other league).
They're not mid-table teams in the slightest, but only dropped in the league due to putting so much effort into winning the EL (Villarreal only dropped to 7th, so still not really mid-table). If Palace, an actual mid-table team, had a surprising season and finished in the EL places, and then decided to focus mostly on their EL campaign the following season, they would be at real risk of relegation because of the fierce competition around them in the league. Frankfurt and Villarreal, the latter especially, don't have that worry of relegation if they focus on Europe, because they're not mid-table teams.

With the Big 6 of the Prem being where they are, all six of them are almost guaranteed a spot in any given year as long as they can all make the top 7 in the Prem. Beyond that, however, I'm curious to see how the larger picture has changed over time and where that might be headed. That could be something to keep an eye on.

Football is in the worst state it has ever been. It is impossible for smaller teams to compete with the Premier League and the other footballing giants like PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Unless UEFA or FIFA step in and properly introduce and enforce spending limits and wage limits, football as we know it will die. If nothing changes in the next 10 years, no team outside the top 10 will have a chance at winning any European trophy. Football has always been for the fans, but now it is only the select few who hold any real power. Soon every premier team will be bought up by some oil conglomerate or another industrial giant, until all the talent in world football is concentrated into one league. UEFA and FIFA are a complete and utter joke, they do nothing to stop this because it makes them richer too. Football fans around the world need to come together and ask for change because without the fans, the owners won't make any money and will be forced to change. The issue is that enough fans want it this way, the delusional fans of the premier league and other giant teams don't want to end their eras of dominance, and they are also partly to blame for the sports downfall. Enough said, I think we just need to call for change, it worked for the super league, it can work for this too.

I've always thought about this. For a long time the Premier League has functioned to hoover up talent from all over the world. The only thing that's English about the league is the fans... well, the local fans in the stadium. Most of the viewers are foreign too, they just pick one of the top 6 to support because the league is the most entertaining because there's so many foreign players which creates a kind of feedback loop. If anything, it's probably in part created interest in countries that didn't have it, but the Premier league is basically like a Super League: cosmopolitan, ruthlessly capitalist, sucking up talent from lesser teams and leagues.
To the average viewer, most teams are completely interchangeable except for the top ones. Samir from Egypt doesn't start to watch the Prem because he's invested in English culture, he wants to see the best player from his country rip up defenses for the team he now supports because, well, Salah plays for them. Which doesn't make this hypothetical person bad, I'm just saying. Obviously the way football functions is kind of like this all over the world, the Prem is just such a gigantic force that it's created kind of a monopoly

As a non British I actually admire the Premier League fairer distribution of tv rights money. Even if the big monster teams run away with the title in the end, it's no different to most European leagues atm.
And honestly the Premier League may be the only league where you can watch a game between the 17th and 18th ranked teams every week and it be more enjoyable that the big teams matches consistently.
In Italy and Spain tv rights distribution is so bad even team that do well in Europe like Sevilla and Atalanta eventually fade rather than build on their success, since all the big teams take their players away, many times just keeping them as benchwarmers.

Basically when premiership started wages and transfer market jumped by a big load and it destroyed all the otherr levels of English football. Football is just a big buissness now it has nothing to do with the fans or anything else just money. La Liga killed there own league in early 2000s, and Italy killed there league in the 90s. Football is terrible these days and only the rich succeed and lower leagues get f**led over, other countries used to have good teams like Romania,Holland, Portugal, Serbia even south American football was strong but now money age has destroyed all these leagues.

No league will surpass the EPL for another 20 years. You can laugh at me, but I think MLS is the only league that can challenge the EPL in 2 decades.
Soccer is growing immensely in the US. The US also happens to be the soft cultural power of the world and obviously, is also English speaking. There's also the US dollar.
I don't see any European challenger to the Premier League. Whoever challenges the EPL, will be a non-European entity.

More big T.V companies need to start buying other leagues T.V rights at a similar level to the EPL deals or this will only get worse. ESPN and DAZN buying La Liga and Serie A would level things out but i cannot see that happening.

What do you mean by turnover'?
If you mean they dont make much money compared to the EPL then we should ask ourselves why that is and IF that could change and if so, would this possibly be a good business opportunity for a large T.V company?
T.V rights are a huge part of the financial differences and this has the knock on affect of a lower quality of player throughout the other big 5 leagues. This in turn lowers attendances.
By increasing the revenue we increase quality and therefore increase attendance.
Is the fact the EPL is the most watched league a eternal fact? Can their dominance be challenged? .....Could this make the challenger a lot of money?
The EPL hasnt always been the most viewed league. At one point it was LaLiga and before that it was Serie A.
Money talks in football and if another league had more money than the EPL the fortunes would soon change, such is the nature of the beast.

For me Personally the EPL isn't doing much different to other Corparations which is what it is. Pricing out the competiotion marketing the hell out of itself and maintaining just enough internal competativeness to promote the idea of an exciting league.
Lets be real United won 13 out of 21 titles and never finished below 2nd until Chelsea in 05. Man City now are basically what United were. The Prem is rarely exciting by season end unless you are a fan of certain clubs. The prem alone isn't responsible for high transfer values it's just more able to meet high tranfer values because of how they branded and marketed themselves
