  • Cruising Around Hawaii - Hilo on Big Island!
    Our second stop onboard the Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas was Hilo on Big Island (Hawaii). There, we did a ship sponsored excursion to Rainbow Falls, Volcanoes National Park with stops at the Kilauea Crater and Thurston Lava Tube, and a lot of time in the bus :-P This half day excursion cost over $200 per person and did not include any kind of food or drink. Is that too much? #cruise #royalcaribbean #hawaii

    Great video Morgan, thanks. We were there on the cruise last summer and LOVE Hawaii. It was our second cruise there (both with NCL). We have not been to the volcano park, YET, but definitely on my list. We do a mix on cruise line excursions and excursions on our own. We also did the canal tubing adventure and LOVED it. Looking forward to your experience. BTW, in several of the ports we used Turo, a private car rental app and loved it. We picked up our cars directly at the cruise port and returned them there as well. If you can’t pick it up at the cruise port, the party renting their car will come and pick you up and drop you back off. It is much cheaper than the car rental companies and also recommended by several other CZcamsrs (think ParoDeejay, etc.). And NO, I’m not affiliated with Turo at all 😉

    Born & raised here on the Big Island. I work at a car rental agency. We get A LOT of cruise ship passengers. Rentals average about $45/day. It does depend on the type of vehicle & the time of the year, though.

    I've been to Maui 4 times and Honolulu and Kauai once. I would definitely visit the Big Island and skip Oahu. As I own a Maui timeshare, I may return there in 2027 (it's a bi-annual timeshare) and then from Maui, take a side trip for around 5 days at Volcano National Park. I loved Haleakala Park (Maui) with it's "Mars-looking" surface so I know I'd enjoy seeing an active volcano.

    I rented a Turo when I went to Hilo in June. Had them leave it on Silva St near the general store. Easy walk from the port. It was really nice to just do my own thing. I had my National Parks pass, so I was able to go right into the park and explore. I was so bummed the ring of craters road off limits due to the activity, but really enjoyed my time there

    We stopped at Kona rather than Hilo. It is a tender port. However, the town is right off the tender. It would have been a long ride to the volcanos.

    The cost of living is Hugh in Hawaii since Foo, fuel and busses have to be imported. If you had gone on your own, you would likely see less and definitely had less information about what you are seeing. Also, sometimes people have a hard time finding transportation back to ship if they don't pay for the driver to stay with them the whole time.

    Regarding price and the guarantee for the ship on top of the cost to go to those places on your own. I'd do $210 PP and have water and packaged snacks. As well as bug spray and suntan lotion.

    We stayed at Volcano House a few weeks after you were there. One of the rangers told me that the lava tube actually extends for like 45 miles. Crazy stuff. It was such a cool place to visit.
    I think I’d rent a car and drive if I were visiting Hilo on a ship. I didn’t see many taxis while we were staying there.

    Hawaii is incredibly expensive. We went on Celebrity Vancouver to Honolulu and around Islands in 2019 and again in 2023. The prices went up so much. Everything is just so expensive. I try and book long in advance and then look for sales for excursions around the holidays...I did have $1000 OBC on my last Hawaii cruise..not sure how I got so much. I did a last minute right before the final payment due date. I upgraded the balcony to concierge got all included which was still gratuities back , $250 OBC additional for $20. It was an unreal sale I fell into...doesn't always happen. Not sure about RC, but Celebrity has great excursion sales. I do book cruises 1-2 years in advance.

    I rented a car for each stop of my Hawaii cruise. It averaged $100/day for an SUV, plus Uber to/from the airport (it’s close) to pick up. Then you have a lot more control of your time. There are also drivers who show up at the cruise port that you can hire for the day.

    • @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides
      @VeryunOfficialTravelGuides  Před 25 dny

      How long does it take from leaving the ship to getting into the car and driving away? I have had rental car experiences where it took over an hour just to get to the counter, which is what discourages me from renting a car for an afternoon in a cruise port. Do they do it differently? I'm glad it worked for you!

    • @penneya3911
      @penneya3911 Před 25 dny

      @@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides not long, I have presidents circle with Hertz for having an Amex platinum, so basically as fast as you can get to the airport you can choose a car (usually) and drive away. The airports are so close to the Hawaii ports (and small, except Oahu) that it was really fast. A couple of times the drop off was stressful though since you have to taxi or Uber back to the port and hopefully there is somebody close to take you.
