Distance from the airport or downtown, availability of transportation, and cost of shuttles busses are all factors that one has to consider when planning any cruise, but cruising in the Mediterranean makes it especially important! No ad here even though I get ads constantly. Sorry! One thing I would like to add to your good advice is that Rome may be worth it if you can fly direct from a city near your home, which is important to us. We can fly nonstop from Miami to Rome in 8-9 hours and I'd rather avoid changing planes to knock off air travel time/layovers in order to get a good night's sleep and endure a bit of a car ride to Citaveccia. We have done Monte Carlo to Venice, Venice to Athens, and this fall we are doing Lisbon to Rome, both cities direct to/from Miami. The cruise line is picking us up and shuttling us to hotel, all inclusive. Not sure the hotel yet but was told it would be a basic business style hotel, probably close to airport, which is okay with us because we've already explored Rome. This time we added extra days in Lisbon. Having spent time in each city before and after, I do highly recommend Athens for the reasons you said (foodie!) as well as Venice. Lots to see and do, fairly easy to get around, distance wise. But our cruise was straight out of Venice. Smaller ships are good for this. When a layover is required (say, London or Amsterdam) then we add on two or three days there because we can't get enough of those cities. We always check bags and usually take cars rather than trains so I can't speak to walking much or schlepping luggage aboard trains. Taking a car to Heathrow was death defying enough.

When we cruised from Ravenna, we flew into Rome, spent 2 nights there, took the train to Ravenna and spent a night there, and arranged private transfer to the port. Ravenna was charming, and I would have loved another night there. We took the train back to Rome upon disembarkation, and spent another night there before we flew home.

Really appreciated your video about Rome/Civitavecchia Watched it a couple of times. We decided to opt to take a Lemo from our hotel to cruise port. Our driver took us directly to where he u loaded our bags & then our bags went directly to the ship people. So easy. We heard several stories of difficulty trying to get to the correct cruise as the port is huge.
Some people took the train to Civitiavecchia the day before & stayed in a hotel overnight. Taxied to the ship the next morning. That sounded nice too. It’s just way more confusing than any other cruise port we’ve ever sailed into or out of.

Before my Mediterranean cruise on the Oasis of the Seas, I stayed at the Hotel Traghetto in Civitavecchia. From there, it was only a few steps to the cruise shuttle bus. Very friendly staff, clean rooms and good wifi. The shuttle to Rome was a bus company that unloaded me directly at the Roma Termini station. It is so wrong of the companies to even add the "famous" location with the slash. This should be banned to avoid creating false expectations.

I think you'll find that a short while ago Barcelona has announced they will be cutting the number of cruise ships they will allow because the town has become too busy for them to continue to accommodate them all.
Piraeus is only 30 minutes drive away from the airport - did it years ago.
I am flabbergasted at the number of cruisers booking a Mediterranean cruise seem to do no research into the places they are planning to go. Even a quick look at a map will show how far Civitavecchia is from Rome. The same applies to Ravenna and Venice.
So glad we went cruising to all these places years ago when were small ships and you could dock in Venice. Also went to Santorini and Mykonos, our very small ship was the only one moored up. Those two places were then authentic Greek villages, now they've ruined them and made them into commercialised tourist spots and have lost much of their original charm.

We booked a mediteranean cruise next year with royal caribbean and it leaves from Ravenna. We booked the cruise because we were on the transatlantic cruise two months ago that disembarked in civitavecchio. We took the train into Rome and stayed 5 days. On one of the days, we took the train into Venice but didn't see enough of it due to the water bus being on strike. Also, when we disembarked from the ship, there was a rail strike. We thought this would be a good opportunity to fly into Venice a few days early and be able to see more of it before cruising to the mediteranean. I am glad we found out early that Ravenna is nowhere near Venice and will arrange a shuttle to the port. Thanks for the info.

London is a minimum on a fantastic traffic day 2 hrs drive. Never done the journey on the train, however I think it's @90 mins into central London from Southampton. Barcelona is a breeze to the port if staying in a central location. Good advice, well done 👍

Yes so great that you mentioned Ravenna is very far from Venice and that transportation needs to be carefully planned! I noticed this when I was planning my upcoming royal Caribbean Greek isles cruise in September. However the cultural delights in Venice outweigh the downfall of the Ravenna port; and thus is not really that bad of a port…RCI did alert us guests about the need to plan transfers and while it is an extra expense, it is a pretty overt and manageable inconvenience!

When I eventually take a Mediterranean cruise, your video on it has convinced me it'll be from Barcelona, even though they've added extra fees for those who depart from there. An easy process from the airport to the hotel matters a lot to me, as does a port where I would enjoy spending a couple of days. It won't be before 2025 though, and maybe 2026. Cancelled it (and lost $1K) and rebooked with MSC from Venice that actually left from Venice (across the bay) and cost about $1K less than Royal, so it was a wash. Had a great couple of days in Venice before the cruise and the switch was well worth being able to stay in Venice and get to the ship easily. Sadly, we did not like MSC itself, but still glad we switched rather than have to make our own way to Ravenna.

Ad: for Mediterranean cruise😀. The time we took a shared minibus from Rome to Civi…what’s its name the driver got stopped by the police for some kind of traffic infraction so we had a “lovely” half hour staring at the garbage cans in a picnic stopover while the driver and police settled the issue
