Today I wanted to talk about an important question when it comes to dealing with methane SIBO. I always ask my patients, "How much better do you feel and how do your symptoms improve when you have completely emptied your bowels for a good amount of time?"
For most methane SIBO patients, constipation is a common issue. They experience extreme bloating and visible distention, and their bowel movements are slow and sluggish. But here's the good news: if we can break that cycle and improve their bowel movements, making them more complete and daily, amazing things happen (for some).
When those bowels start moving better and you see improvements in bloating and distention, it's a cause for celebration. Many methane SIBO patients experience a reduction in these stubborn symptoms.
Sometimes, it's tough to shift that bloating and distention, but if you see improvements when you focus on getting your bowels moving regularly and completely, that's great news. However, I have to be honest-it's not a straightforward fix for everyone.
If you're not seeing improvements in bloating and distention despite emptying your bowels completely, it's time to consider looking at your transit time. How long does it take for food to pass from your mouth to the toilet bowl?
You might be surprised to learn that even if you're having a bowel movement every day, it doesn't mean things are moving efficiently. Some patients with watery bowel movements multiple times a day can still take up to a week for food to pass through their digestive tract. No wonder they're bloated and distended!
Ideally, all that food should pass through within 24 to 36 hours, 48 hours at the most. So, while we should be flexible and open-minded, it's important to have a goal of speeding up transit time if you're regularly emptying your bowels but not seeing improvements in bloating and distention.
I hope this information helps you understand the importance of bowel movements and their impact on methane SIBO symptoms. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and comment on the video, and I'll catch you in the next one!

So true! Transit time is so important. Not many focus on this like you do. Love the transit time test with the sesame seeds!

Thank you for your very informative videos. I would really appreciate a video on treating a sluggish gallbladder, specifically gallbladder dyskinesia ( I was diagnosed with this after being on a proton pump inhibitor for bit) Eventually, this caused my SIBO symptoms. I am nervous that even after successful SIBO antimicrobial treatment the SIBO may return due to a low functioning gallbladder. Thank you kindly

Thank you for your sibo videos. Except the incorporating the mentioned herbs what kind of diet would you recommend to pair them with? (for methane sibo) I keep hearing different things from different people and I am just really confused.

Thanks for the comment! Diet seems to be less of a symptom improver for most of my methane patients. The long term solution for most is higher fibre but in the short term can flair symptoms. I recommend low FODMAP but not strictly, look for triggers to symptoms and work on the fundamentals (better BM, faster transit time and antimicrobials to reduce and rebalance!) Hope that helps :-) Anything you want me to cover let me know

@@ByronHerbalist Please yes. I have no help where I live so am reliant on research articles & a very few cherry picked experts like you who I trust. Am just trying L-Carnitine after reading Japanese research that states it helps with motility. Really hoping this is a step in the right direction but please anything at all you can bring to the table. My problem I'm concluding is a nervous system issue based on my other symptoms as all the other 'fibre/exercise/probiotics/etc have had zero positive effect. I'm histamine intolerant & positive that the constipation issue is at the root of it. Bless you for all your help.

Thanks Todd. So I assume you measure transit time with the sesame seed test you mentioned in another video?
Also, what kind of advice do you have for people with a lot of upper GI symptoms? I am methane dominant, yet my actual methane levels are fairly low. Horrific upper GI symptoms and bloating though.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Yes indeed, sesame seeds are a great way to track transit. Upper GI symptoms I would explore enzymes and HCL deficiencies, gastroparesis and infections and overgrowths in the stomach too.

Hi! thanks for the video! I am trying to get to emptying my bowels completely. I found turkey rhubarb very effective, but I am scared to use it for more than a week since I do not know what dosage is safe to avoid laxative dependence. Is 1000mg or 1500mg a day safe to use for say 2-3 months? Is it ok to take in one go, before bed? Thanks!

I was diagnosed with Methane SIBO / IMO about 3 months ago. My biggest symptom was severe bloating/ like I was 6 months pregnant, constantly, even without eating/ drinking anything. Also weight gain in the abdomen, despite of working out 5-6 times a week / not eating over 1,500 calories most days or less. Just finished 2nd round Rifaximin & neomycin treatment and for the first time in like 4-5 years that I'm going to the bathroom regularly (like 2-3) times a day, after food; where for years it would be like once every few days. I do still have bloating though? Does it take a bit for body to transition with bloating or any input / help that u can provide? Also once treated, any supplements to take on daily to help prevent/ keep SIBO away?
