    Tank! is widely regarded as one of the best Intro songs of all time. The whole point of the anime is that it's built around music, that's why the episodes are called "sessions" (as in Jazz) and all episodes titles have music motifs.

    The Bebop is their ship. "Cowboy" is slang for "bounty hunter".

    • @ragnar97
      @ragnar97 Před 6 lety +85

      Bebop is also a music style. It's the music style they use for the soundtrack for that matter. I always interpreted the title to be meant as "the cowboy's bebop" or "the cowboy's song", essentially a bebop that tells the story of a cowboy.
      Always thought the ship being named The Bebop had nothing to do with the title. I may be wrong though, I'll have to read up on it

      Ha Ha Ha Ha Wrong read any Shinichiro Watanabe interview he has stated multiple times Bebop was for the jazz music and Watanabe always starts with music first then characters then story the naming of the Bebop came near the end of the writing process Cowboy was a play on America's fascination with guns while also paying homage to old western movies.....It's common knowledge @RagnarTheRed gets it .....while your interpretation is not wrong its not the creator's intended interpretation ......

    • @Glassandcandy
      @Glassandcandy Před 4 lety +4

      Cowboy Bebop is also symbolic for the deliberate melding of genres and styles that the show does (sci-fi, western, jazz, blues, rock, drama, comedy, etc.) The juxtaposition of two things so uncommon “cowboy” and “bebop” which somehow so accurately reflect the style is supposed to represent that. That’s why in many of the title cards in the background it sometimes says: “They must create new dreams and films by breaking traditional styles. They are sick and tired of conventional fixed style jazz. …the work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called COWBOY BEBOP, will play without fear of risky things.”

    • @Glassandcandy
      @Glassandcandy Před 4 lety +2

      Maiku X that’s so stupid. Bebop wasn’t the death of jazz it was its elevation into a higher artform. That’s why Charlie Parker is considered one of the undisputed best jazz musicians of all time, and he was pretty much the progenitor of bebop as a style. I think you’re confusing bebop with free jazz. Bebop is not hard to listen to per se even if theoretically it is complicated/complex. It’s still highly melodic and the licks are easy to follow

      @Gracjanos1357 Před 6 lety +52

      Being episodic is not a fault. I also prefer serialized shows but Cowboy Bebop doesn't want to be serialized because episodic nature of it actually helps the narrative and as an episodic show Bebop is pretty much flawless.
      I would definitely put it up there with shows like Breaking Bad as one of the best shows of all time even though it's not even close to being my favorite.

    This is the anime sci fi tv series that Quentin Tarantino would make. It’s got a lot of the same influences-spaghetti westerns, blaxploitation films, Bruce Lee kung fu films, John Woo style Hong Kong action movies, etc.
    In fact, Tarantino asked Daryl Hannah to watch this series in preparation for her role in the Kill Bill movies.

      Ochinpo only for the violence and language, though. Look at the influences for Cowboy Bebop. Spaghetti Westerns? Check. Kung Fu movies? Check. Blaxploitation films? Check. John woo style Hong Kong action movies? Check. Those are all giant influences on both this series and Tarantino. Black Lagoon has none of that.

    If you guys like this, I can't recommend Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy highly enough. Very, VERY different shows from Cowboy Bebop, but spear-headed by the same guy and with the same core premise of "odd genre mashup". Cowboy Bebop is clearly Sci-Fi Western with Jazz, but Samurai Champloo is Medieval Samurai Hip-Hop and Space Dandy is Sci-Fi Psychedelic Disco.
    EDIT: They also both have A+ english dubs, just like Cowboy Bebop.

    Great pick!
    This show is a hodge-podge of references, homages and remixing of various old and new age media. It incorporates a lot of its lore and world building into the background. The show mostly just focuses on the main crew and their adventures. But it is really interesting to take note of the little things in each episode that help flesh out the world.
    Session #1: Asteroid Blues has a Blues musical aesthetic and takes place largely on an Asteroid colony called Tijuana. You'll see in the show that even though humanity has colonized the solar system, people still tend to congregate with others that share their cultural background.
    This place is home to a Native American shamanistic fellow that Spike visits for advice in the beginning. This helps build the cowboy western aesthetic the show likes to use. There are also various Mexican influences. First and most obvious is the name of Tijuana. Spike also wears a Poncho and Sombrero when he ambushes Asimov and no one finds him out of place. But the biggest reason there is a Mexican theme to this episode? The episode is a tribute to the film "Desperado". At the same time we make these references to past in a sci-fi futuristic show, we also make heavy use of Blues music which is anachronistic, but fits so well. The whole show likes to juxtapose the old with the new.
    Addressing the sci-fi portion of the show, you all noticed the space colony wrapping along up the sides of the cylinder probably a method to artificially create gravity via rotation. It isn't that later sci-fi shows copied this design from Cowboy Bebop. It is that Cowboy Bebop incorporated the common sci-fi ideas into their space western. Science fiction writers had been dreaming up cylindrical space habitats for years. And in fact one prominent science fiction author, Issac Asimov, was paid homage by naming the antagonist Asimov.
    There are plenty of other references and homages you could point out in regards to the crew, but it isn't so obvious having not yet learned too much about them. I'll leave that up to future discovery as you continue to watch the show.

    Every time I hear the theme song ("Tank" by The Seatbelts btw) I start going nuts with my head movements! Love this series so much!
    Spike is a former gangster with a masterful sense of cool. Jet is a former cop. Their crew does get a bit larger as the series progresses, but Im not gonna spoil who they are yet! Also yes, their main ship is called the Bebop, and they also have individual ships they pilot hangared inside: I think Jet's pinkish ship is called the Swordfish, and Jet i forgot his ship's name. It takes place in the future where space travel is possible, but it's all populate by humans, no crazy aliens, just us and a lot of earth animals colonizing the planets. Earth got trashed by a meteor shower, so it's kind of a waste of a planet now, even though there are some who still live there. But the space stations, locations and places they visit are very distinct. And the stories and atmosphere definitely stay with you long after you watch them, same as the characters.
    Cowboy Bebops is a very special experience that I hope you guys are going to enjoy as much as we do.
    Oh, and by the way: put the soundtrack on repeat if you're out for a long drive somewhere. It's THAT good!

    Cowboy Bebop was produced by Sunrise and aired from April to June 1998, with some of the series' 26 episodes. In September 2001, a theatrical version, Cowboy Bebop: Door to Heaven, was released. It won the TV award at the 3rd Kobe Animation Festival in November 1998, and the Nebula Award in the Media category at the Japan Science Fiction Convention in 2000.
    Set in the solar system centered on Mars in 2071, this space western anime follows the adventures of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and his crew as they travel aboard the dilapidated spaceship, the Bebop. It features stylish dialogue, cool visuals, and thrilling mecha and gun action. The main story has a hard-boiled touch, but the style varies depending on the episode, with a wide range including suspense, horror, slapstick comedy, and cyberpunk. As the title "Bebop" suggests, the series uses a variety of music genres, including jazz, blues, rock, and techno, and this, combined with its unique worldview, creates a unique style that was not seen in existing science fiction works.
    Director Shinichiro Watanabe said, "I made this by putting in everything I had wanted to do up until then but couldn't," and "I thought I was making a 20-minute movie each time." When it was first broadcast, many people said it was similar to "Lupin the Third," but according to Watanabe, it is more similar to the TV drama "Detective Story," starring Yusaku Matsuda, which was popular in Japan in the 1970s (including the narration for the next episode preview).
    Another feature of this work is that the racial characteristics of the characters are well reflected in the design of the world setting. According to character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, this was because director Watanabe gave permission.
    The production was handled by Sunrise Studio 2. The core staff was made up of people from the network of Watanabe and producer Masahiko Minami, who had previously been involved in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Macross Plus, and Escaflowne. After the TV series was produced, Minami and his team left Sunrise to found Bones, which produced the film.
    Sunrise is originally a studio that produces many original robot animes with the intention of commercializing toys, but the idea for this work also came from an offer from Bandai Hobby Division, who saw a spaceship boom coming with the resurgence in popularity following the release of the new Star Wars trilogy, to make an anime that could be developed into spaceship plastic models. When Minami asked Watanabe if he had any ideas, he was inspired by the work of American bounty hunters and immediately came up with an idea for a stateless action movie set in space in the near future. The concept was "space jazz" rather than space opera, and the project title was "Shooting Star Bebop!" .
    However, the unique style of the work was met with a negative response from those around, and it was almost lumped together with another project that Sunrise was working on at the same time. The sponsor almost dropped the project, saying, "This won't sell spaceships," but with the cooperation of Bandai Visual, the show was able to be aired. The record company releasing the soundtrack opposed the idea, saying, "How many jazz records do you think sell in Japan?" (Music director Yoko Kanno also said that she initially thought, "Jazz will never sell"), and those involved who watched the first episode before it aired commented, "It's too dull. It won't sell."
    With no prospect of royalty income from the toys, a detailed plan was devised to recoup the investment through music CDs and video packages. As a result, the software was a hit, and Sunrise stated that this work "achieved sales of videos and music CDs comparable to those of the Gundam series." According to producer Minami, the production costs were so high that the president of Sunrise said to him, "Minami, are you trying to ruin the company!?"
    The opening and ending songs and background music in the film were all composed by Yoko Kanno, with the exception of a few, and performed by The Seatbelts, a group that included Kanno and other musicians from Japan and abroad. In addition to the ending song, vocal songs were used extensively.
    The first soundtrack won the Animation Album of the Year award at the 13th Japan Gold Disc Awards.
    The theme song, Tank!, was used in the short program of Canadian male single skater Kevin Reynolds at the 2016 Canadian Figure Skating Championships (with costumes by Spike Spiegel).
    The terrestrial broadcast version was subject to self-censorship, and violent and sexual content, as well as flashing lights, were revised or cut. This was due to the fact that between the start of production and the broadcast, there were violent crimes committed by minors, such as the Kobe serial child murders and the Tochigi female teacher stabbing incident, and TV Tokyo's regulations were strengthened due to the "Pokémon Shock." The final episode, a compilation titled "Yoseatsume Blues -
    A Collection Blues," is a protest against these restrictions and cuts in the form of monologues by the main characters, and unlike regular compilations, it makes almost no reference to the story itself. The ending concludes with the provocative message, "THIS IS NOT THE END. YOU WILL SEE THE REAL "COWBOY BEBOP" SOMEDAY!" This episode has been excluded from subsequent rebroadcasts and has not been included on video software such as DVDs.
    In the United States, the series was first released on video and DVD, and was broadcast nationwide (TV-14: ages 14 and over only) on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim slot from September 1, 2001, where it gained popularity. However, the depictions of fake blood and naked women were edited out for this broadcast, and episodes 6 (as they were reminiscent of the Columbine High School shooting), 8 (hijacking), and 22 (building bombing) were not broadcast on the first episode due to broadcasting codes and the influence of the September 11 terrorist attacks (though they were aired in a rerun immediately after).
    The evolution of the theme songs is as follows 😌
    Opening theme "Tank!"
    Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS)
    Ending theme "THE REAL FOLK BLUES"
    Lyrics by Yuho Iwasato / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane
    "SPACE LION" (#13)
    Composed by Yoko Kanno / Performed by The Seatbelts (THE SEATBELTS)
    "BLUE" (#26)
    Lyrics by Tim Jensen / Composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno / Sung by Mai Yamane

    Regarding the big space station/habitat thing: that design is generally referred to as an O'Neill cylinder. It's a concept proposed in the 70's by a physicist called Gerard K. O'Neill (hence the name) for an entirely self sufficient space based colony that mimics an enclosed earth-like environment.
    It's cropped up in a number of sci-fi properties over the years; mostly literature, but some visual media too. The most prominent are probably this show, Babylon 5, Mass Effect, Elysium, Interstellar and more recently, The Expanse.
    So I'd say the odds that this show directly influenced Interstellar are rather slim. ;)
