To each their own. I tend to check leaks but mostly to make pull plans and decide who am I gona hype over design wise and then be completely disappointed as their gameplay on release ends up making me question if it was worth it

I hate when people try to get mad on another person's behalf, especially a whole other race's. What aggravates me even more, is that Arabic people (the people that the twittards get mad on behalf of) honestly don't even care. One of them even pointing out that not all Arabic people have a lot of melanin in their skin, and being pissed at the twittards. Plus, (Don't tell Mihoyo- *ahem* Hoyoverse) Sumeru is said to come out in 2 parts. The first is the jungle part and the second is the desert. This is further proven by one of the lines the Dendro Archon had said at the end of the live stream. She talks about how she wishes the lush forest and desert sand could work better in harmony, in a bigger way, not just the environment. This could hint at the story for Sumeru, about how the dessert side and the forest side are not on good terms. Then it would be up to the traveler to fix up the nation's problems just like the last 3 times. But anyways, we all know that Cyno will be playable eventually, yet not a leak about him in sight. All of the new map leaks are of the forest side of Sumeru, I assume the characters are too. It would make sense that Cyno is from the dessert side, which is why he has tanned skin and more revealing clothes to cool off. Most characters that were leaked are probably from the forest side, which is why they most likely have lighter skin. Dehya (hot bandit-looking lady) has tanner skin and a lot more revealing clothing, like Cyno, which leads me to believe she is from the dessert side. But that doesn't mean she can't be from the forest side, or that she can't come out when the dessert side isn't out. The other characters have more forest-y clothes, which is why they are **obviously** from the dessert side. (that was sarcastic if you couldn't tell) I'm just tired of twitter as a whole. I don't trust anyone who takes twitter seriously. Look at how long this comment is, I really took a whole 10 minutes to write this. What a waste of time :/
well believe me as someone with darker skin im very disappointed. im not quiting the game just yet but i was looking forward to a dark skinned archon and seeing everyone look pale besides one character who i dislike because they are claymore really sucks. i understand inazuma liyue and monstadt having characters taht are white and asian because the regions they are based on have those races in them. imagine if everyone in inazuma had blonde hair, yeah it doesnt ruin the game and doesnt take away from the world but if its obviously based on japan its kind of weird for evevryone to not look japanese or at least somewhat asian, i personally think it gets even weirder when they have japanese or aisan names and look starch white. i think the concerns are valid just handled the wrong way, im not going to e mail hoyoverse and THREATEN them over this. i just might not go for as many characters or whatever. atp i can beat everything with ease so why get more characcters. hopefully later characters have a darker skin tone but even though its a "minor" detail, people who are darker in skin color looking forward to mroe representation are disapointed mainly becaause i just want to see mroe ddaark skin characters that are usable. kaeya is ok but i dotn have cosn to make him as good as my built dps, xinyan sucks and i dislike her design so there arent really any characters with dark skin that are meta or aat least justifiably good. like xiao isnt top dps but he is very viable and has good dmg. amber can be good with extremly high inveestment but you would easily get more dmg if u built yoimiya and or ganyu. thats a side not but basically it sucks to see the region i thought we would get mroe characters taht look like me not have that and instead get all white people. ofc baizhu is white so its no suprise there are people with lighter skin but i was hoping to get more dark skinned characters.
I remember someone saying that wearing revealing clothes in desert enviroments is actually bad. You'll get extreme sunburns and even might die. It is better to wear light and baggy clothes, since space in it helps wind to circulate and cools your body, while also avoiding sunburns.

@@shinymew1213 this is based on Arabic culture, not everyone has to be black and even if a black character gets released, people will want them darker then darker then darker until the character’s pitch black. Again, this is based of Arabs/Indians/etc. Not Africa. As an Arab, I say most of us are pretty pale.
And I get that you want representation but there aren’t many black people on Arabic regions yes there are some but not everyone has to be black.

My opinion on this whole thing is, yes, I agree that diversity in skin color is cool. It would be weird if every character had the same eye color right? Same with skin. What is not okay though is absolutely FREAKING the heck out when you don't get your way. Be disappointed, hope and ask for dark skinned characters in the future, whatever. But like harassing the company and changing the characters' skin colors in fanarts is not okay. Lots of fanart I've seen of the Sumeru characters has their skin changed to be tan, and that's just... really weird to me. If you want dark skinned characters THAT badly, make an oc or something. And also, in my opinion, as long as the characters are designed well does it really matter that much? Their actual character matters way more than what skin color they are. Yeah, it's good to have a variety of skin colors, but it shouldn't be such a massive deal and like the main focus in character design. These people need to chill lmao.
Edit: Also, these are only a few of the Sumeru characters. We know there's going to be at least one more darker skinned character in Sumeru (Cyno) and likely many more in Natlan.

Tbf I've seen sumeru as half desert half forest very accurate in terms of their designs.
When I first heard of sumeru I thought the lands being a desert while being a dendro archon spot pretty strange till ive read through the lore.
I'm thinking that the new character designs seem to have a much explained appearance
Kaeya was told about to have that he tanned his skin while the rock n roll girl I keep forgetting the name of got her skin darkened from staying under the sun for long hours got street performing.
Now that I think the Pyro region having more dark skinned characters seem logical without relating the culture inspiration for them.

Someone said on Twitter that Scara will sell more compared to Kusanali. I told him not every one pulls for waifu or husbando. Admittedly, it was worded a bit poorly, but the dude started finding other reasons for hating on Kusanali because she wasn't accurate to middle East or India and ranted about why can't Sumeru be accurate to history.
I replied fiction doesn't have to accurate.
And that person went on a 4 tweet rant about how Mondstadt, Liyue and Inazuma were accurate to history. That's when I realized I was arguing with a stupid person, considering they treated Genshin like a history book. In the end, that tweeter was hating on Kusanali for the sake of hating her.

OK OK Im literally Indian (as in i am from the country India which Sumeru is based of along with others) and I was disappointed that all the characters were white especially since I was looking forward to it. Its a game I like and its basing off the place I live so I might have characters I relate to
but even if i was disappointed i understand that this is just a game.. It maybe based on the place but Its not that place. Its still located in a fictional world.. Like Im not gonna mass email them or anything...

Makes me glad I don't really use Twitter much beyond checking a friend's feed every now and then.
This kind of toxicity is the unavoidable consequence of intentionally making a mass appeal game. Fortunately I do not really consider myself to be part of the Genshin Impact community despite being an addicted player who's done some degree of co-op with randoms, but I worry about the mental health of the.. relatively sane/sane people who have to put up with this community regularly.
Leaks are great, I always enjoy looking at the new character as I'm a low spender, I have to plan ahead to get the character I want unlike my first year of Genshin which is full of pain and suffering, all the great character I got in their rerun. Zhongli, Venti, Ganyu, Ayaka, and soon Kazuha I either don't have enough to reach soft pity or lose 50/50 on their first banner
Once I got Kazuha I'm saving 150 pull for Kusanali cuz I'm not taking chances
Anyway thank god I don't have Twitter, thank you for suffering for our entertainment, and great content bro
You don't even need leaks for that. Save up primos and when there is a character you want, just ask yourself: Do I REALLY want that character? If you get it and regret getting it, you didn't REALLY want that character. I already said before the leaks I am saving up for the Dendro archon because 1. I absolutely want a Dendro character, 2. the Archons have been extremely powerful in their own right and C. Fuck Kazuha. And I am currently sitting at...something like 140 wishes with 60 pity, so I am guaranteed to get the next 5 star I choose. (low spender as well, only getting BP). The fact that Kusanali looks...how she looks is just the cherry on top. I still would have pulled her if I didn't get leaked (yeah, I didn't actively look for the leaks, -thank- fuck you youtube leakers with your stupid thumbnails)

from an aesthetic/artistic standpoint, im mainly concerned by mihoyos lack of skin variety (not specifically tone) in general. we know 99% of the characters in game are pale. but... they're all the same shade? the exact same shade? of the 50(!) charcters avaiable, three (kaeya, xinyan, rosaria) have a noticeably differant tone. i'm white, and my whole family is white, but im a lot paler than my mom. basically, mihoyo has a larger problem with their design choices thats not just "not enough characters are poc" (which is a problem, dont get me wrong. not fighting that.)

for me personally, (not speaking for all in my group just me), (again anyone else can think differently and it wouldn't be right or wrong it'll be an opinion) I could not give two fucks if the characters were light or dark skinned. Would it be great and awesome for more diversity between characters, yes (speaking as a brown Indian girl myself who is living in india), but i'm not gonna put the responsibility for more diversity based on the real world on a fantasy game, I'm just here to see how they take vague inspirations based on the real world and spin them into an episodic anime isekai story.
I want more diversity, but i'm not gonna pull my hair out and rage about it if they choose not to. I could just as easily add another game into my roster which provides more diversity if it's that important to me to see dark skinned characters.
I'll just continue to ask hoyoverse when i get to, to introduce more dark characters in general when new rosters show up and hope that they do. It is the minimum that they can do, so i do hope so in the future.
I've been seeing on twitter (the last time i went the whole madness started right then, so i never went again) that people have been trying to "fix" the sumeru characters by tanning them and....uh...idk if the term i'm applying here is the correct one or not so correct me if i'm wrong, in the general direction of how "blackface" works.
Like making a pale person purposefully dark skinned to imitate black people...in this case indian and darker skinned arabian people. Especially when the original artist intended for them to be pale. Am i right in thinking like this?
I would understand making a character darker skinned if it's their work and interpretation, as long as they still respect the integrity of the original artist, but disrespecting the artist and then trying to "fix" their by imitating patterns of blackface in order to make themselves comfortable with the character, it is showing blatant racism.
Like, those people won't like the character or even attempt to understand them because the skin color they have is not what they want them to have, showing that their skin is more important than their personal identity and that respect is to only be given to your favorite skinned people....That is being racist towards the pale skinned/white people. I know some white people have had a history of being racist, but if other skinned people do the same things back to them, it is still being racist , they aren't better than the some white racists themselves.
Idk if it's because i live in a society where 99.9% of people i see are brown like me, and cause of that i've never faced racism before, so i never had the need to be in competition with pale skin for better representation cause i see it around me every single day. I think that is what is influencing my opinion.
Maybe it would be a different for POCs america and european states where continuous competition between white and poc people happen for representation and where racism happens the most....hmmmm
Seems like people forget that it's imaginary world in a Chinese anime game made mostly for Asian audiences (that gives them most money). They take features from other countries (architecture, music, legends and names) and adapt it in fantasy world like alot of other games but they never claimed to represent state or history of a real country. Liyue chars don't represent Chinese people as well as Inazuma chars are not Japanese people and don't look like them. I'm sure they'll make tan characters as well, there was info about it but pale characters also have a place to exist. It's ok to be upset and want more diversity but gah dam some people need to think sometimes more then a second and chill.
And yes, "redesign" and "fixing" annoyings me too. It's a complete character - you take it or just leave it.
You will have nowhere to go if you start mixing between fantasy and real life... this is all i can say. As far as fantasy goes, all we can do is just.. enjoy. Honestly after the hiccup in 2.6 i really glad hoyo prepared so much content in 2.7, 2.8 and 3.0... and i hope no more hiccup....

As an indian who has been quite fair, I haven't seen the issue. Loads of Indians are fair. Sumeru is based off of parts of Egypt, Middle East and India.
The reason I'm mad about Kusanali's design, is because she looks absolutely nothing like the Indian goddess she was supposedly inspired from (Saraswati the goddess of Knowledge) and I find it disrespectful to the culture. Also, a 500 yo loli? What's the point? MHY are disgusting pedophiles lmao

I don't really care what they do with the characters, in the end you like them or not, but what people do for it is madness. But let's be real here, we all would like to have some skin differences even in the NPCs. It's starting to get boring to see the same characters over and over again with only different clothing and hairstyle. The only NPC i'm willing to see every single f*cking day is gigachad Liben! He even stands out from the main characters. 😂

This whole thing really isn't that serious, and so many people are missing the point. I may not totally agree with their grand designs for the future, but I'm not gonna blow a gasket and start the next Armageddon about it. I'm still grateful for the fact this game has provided me, like you said, an escape from everything else that is wild in the world today and am appreciative of so many things about the game in and of itself.

i do think its justified to be mad at them for misrepresenting a culture. the main issue i have is the archon no longer having a dark skin tone. i know they died and all that but when i saw the preview all the archons look similar to their preview, dendro archon looked like they had darker skin and now they are whiter than a british person.

Worst of it is all they saw were the characters alone. We don’t know the lore behind it, why they’re in this way and most importantly, it’s a LEAK! The rule is to take every leaks with a grain of salt, and not for granted. Also, characters in a game being whatever color won’t hurt anyone

i just know realised hoyoverse indeed don't have access to fkn twitter and that made me laughing and tearing up
in a way its warranted cus they made the chinese and japanese characters so deeply tied to their regions. hell, even the germans are done really well. the one based on places with a huge variety of cultures and skin colours only using flashlight white and culturally mixed aladdin aesthetics. the effort seemed to just drop.
