Our candace is a sumeru local, and the desert part of sumeru is inspired from egypt where people range from white to tan according to a local that told me so. If they want us to play by their logic they've lost already at that. Even the rainforest part of sumeru is full of mixed skin tones, whether they be eremites, civilians, or akademiya scholars

I made a little reaserch, and for what i found, i think that she is "at least 50%" inspired by Amanirenas.
-her heterochromia is a reference to the blind eye of Amanirenas
-the name
-in her shield have a symbol in Meroitic language (language of Kush)

-her warrior pose is really similar to a lot of fan art of Amanirenas (but maybe is a coincidence)
-the falcon in her shield is the "spirited animal" of Amanirenas (but also a common symbol in egypt)
-in general, all other symbol of Candace are used in both kushite and egyptian culture. (eye of horus, ankh...).
-her clothes are a mixed of kushite warrior and egyptian warror

Just because a character is inspired by another character\Historical figure, doesn’t mean they should physically the same looks as that person. Scaramouche is based off a dell’Arte which is an Italian comedy character. They don’t look the same do they? Same with MANY and MOST characters.

I am all for darker skinned characters in Genshin, I 100% agree with twitter on that. But... I've seen twitter threads where someone answers to people criticizing the fandom's obsession with race with a "do you know how Africa looks" and... Yes. There's a very big black population in Africa. However, there's also lighter skinned people in there too. Egypt itself has been a subject of controversy for ages due to race, since it had such a big mixing in it both on the population and on the artistic depictions of ancient times (because, you know, it's a pretty big country where depending on your position and how much outside labour you did, your skin could go from light to tanned to brown to very dark brown). I live in Portugal, which is pretty close to northern Africa, and when my family went there (specifically Tunisia) a lot of people had the exact same shade as me, or were on the tanned side, and some were also black.
YES, do give us some black characters. But to say that all of Africa is black just shows your complete ignorance. Africa is a fucking huge continent, not a homogeneous country. Yes Sumero would be great for characters that have the same shade as Kaeya or even darker, and I personally would have loved if Nilou for example was on the darker side, but... Genshin is not where I do my activism, I save that for the real world where I do donations and will start volunteering after summer. If all your activism is on twitter over gacha characters, that says a lot about your actual morals.
Funny. When I pointed out to someone, that we (hopefully) will get characters with dark skin in Natlan (since it IS based off of africa) and that we should not worry to much since mihoyo can do it (We saw it with Kaeya), they said, that Kaeya is to dark. These people will NEVER be happy. I stopped watching some channels because these people are there now.
Also I fully agree with you. Sumeru would have been a good place for characters with dark skin but I believe they save that for later.
The problem with these people is also, that they don't do they're homework.
Dark skin does not mean black! I mean if they try to use real world logic, did they never watch a movie about egypt or something? Candace is light yes, but not to far off in my opinion.
I think the main issue (though some people have taken it a bit far) isnt that there isnt light skinned people in egypt but rather that genshin has too many. Im not talking about black vs white vs dark skinned either just tones in general.
Egypt for example has light skinned people sure but they’re not all the same color, or quite as light as genshin bc of yk…sun.
personally as someone who lives in south africa I dont really mind what we have now and I adore the characters a lot I just wish we had slightly more variety. Kaeya isnt even black he’s tan, and having someone be slightly darker would fit so much better in the game right now bc there is literally only 2 skin tones (3 with cyno) and artistically its looking a bit dry.

I am also of the opinion we should have more body types in genshin (maybe in between heights, muscle, etc), but I know those would probably be "harder" to program, but skin like you described should be way easier. I do agree that you end up with characters that look like re-skins after a while, and changing the skin to have more ranges would definitely help

After the Sakoku decree, when Japan started to go through a more western influence, more westernized clothing started being used. The fact Ayato comes after Inazuma opens up while carrying such a design is pretty symbolic for change, but since all their history knowledge is "japan wear kimono ahah sakura tree" it went over their heads and they criticized it. The blond dude from another dimension defeating a God is completely accurate to japanese mythology according to my brain though, so you're absolutely right on that!

To be fair I kinda agree that the lacks on skintone diversity should be changed… BUT seriously people really thought that every region would be super respectful or their culture’s inspiration ? Mondstadt is a mix of Germany and Italy inspiration and a lot of characters can be seen as stereotypical like « omg germans are alcoholic » …. Pleaaaaase no one can convince me that every région besides sumeru was respected. Fontaine (that you can litteraly translate by fountain) has the npc who are petty with a huge superiority complex and very very very old fashioned name. I swear I bet they will eat baguette. Also, even if the characters are based of real people or a culture, people forget that it's BASED OF, not literal, also this is a fantasy game, everything can be possible, of course it's more believable if there's any explanation for the things that happen and the way somethings are, but let's also explore how different fictional worlds can be. And if at the end of the day you still don't agree with something, you can go f*ck off :D

I think the Twitter missionaries are making the wrong claims here. I personally feel that it’s unfortunate that there are no black characters in a game as huge as Genshin. But that’s more an issue with the entire medium of anime in general rather than Genshin itself. That said, it would still be nice if they could include a black character at some point. Even if it is a fantasy world, Western fantasy has never had issues with including POC people one bit, so I don’t see any real excuses for Eastern fantasy to not do the same. That said, the activities of Genshin players on Twitter are usually uncalled for, especially harassing voice actors. Don’t blame the VAs.
Follow up: I should have clarified modern Western fantasy - it’s been an uphill battle to get POCs in media even over here, but the West is certainly ahead of the East in that regard

Abt the candace and alhaitham thing; its fine to be inspired by a real historic figure but not make them identical, it’s just weird to see hyv being too scared to make a character darker than kaeya. They made a very dark character in zenless zone zero but not in genshin... sumeru doesnt need to be entirely black, there are tan and pale ppl in middle eastern/north african and south east asian regions. Itd be nice to have more diversity since they clearly do a lot of research and can make very accurate regions and characters every once in a while (again, they dont always need to be accurate, but itd be nice)
Making a character darker than Kaeya is dangerous for their fanbase in China, remind you that Black people are being removed from Movie posters for the Chinese theaters, so...Hoyoverse just takes the middle ground, Tan, but not black skin

Also, you are wrong at saying that Li yue and Inazuma are only about the irl countries. Li yue has many things from Hindu and other neighboring countries, because surprise surprise, we live in one world. And Inazuma has many things indirectly from other countries like Enkanomiya being way closer to Rome with the story of Spartacus and Tsurumi Island not being actually japanese in many aspects

Kandake is a title not a name. It's the same as wanting to be named Pharaoh. Which is also why people are so wrong for trying to force Hoyoverse to darken Candace's skin. Candace is neither a queen nor is she based on a central africa country royalty, she dresses like what people think ancient Egyptians dressed, her skin tone makes perfect sense for an Egyptian or anyone from middle east, there is literally no problem with the character.

But it's just that there is simply no way to think Candace is related to actual Kandakes. Egypt never really took control of Kush for an Egyptian themed character to be related to Nubian queens. The Kingdom actually died before Egypt could take control of it.
It's the same with Alhaithan. He shares a similar name to Ibn al-Haytham. In reality Alhaitham has nothing else to do with the historical figure, he is a linguist who also studies ancient runes, while Ibn al-Haytham was one of the father's of modern science, he laid the foundation for the study of optics, and was a polymath with knowlege is many different scientific fields.
I'd he existed in Genshin impact he'd be the sage of Spantamad with some influence into the Amurta sect and that sect that dealt with political science. While having absolutely nothing to do with the Haravatat, which is where Alhaitham is from.
I know that this whole thing is old and stuff, but I still believe that these people's idea of representation only comes from character's skintone when it includes so much more. Sumeru is rich with representation when it comes to their music and environment, even as something silly as the consumables it has.
(Not to mention that aumerus inpriration is way bigger and mixed scale than the previous regions, and its also a fantasy game so of course they won't make it realistic 100%)
