Fix Your Pitted Foxbody Mustang Quarter Window Moldings S03E53

  • Here's how to fix the 1/4 window moldings on your 1987-1993 Mustang Fox Body. You can do this at home with a few products that won't break the bank but maybe take up some of your time. These windows were in pretty good shape to begin with but it is why I stress the use of a proper filler and not to just build up lots of primer that won't flex under various conditions! Hopefully you find this video helpful!
    Some products are no longer continued...so I have substituted for what I use today.

    Here in the SW High altitude desert sun has backed mine hard and brittle. Whole sections have chipped away. Already have replacements that sadly aren't logo'd but at least won't detract. Great technique. If I can find a salvageable set I'll have to give it a try.

      @@TheInfamousProject i mean I'd love to but can't agree. Ford at least used a hardener in their primer I'm sure. I've been professionally painting for 3 years now and bodywork for 8+ but ive been into old rusty cars forever. I've done everh repair you can think of from good to bad and can assure you're better off investing in a compressor, gun and cheap primer set up or buy 2k aerosol primer like eastwood which is just as easy to use and much more durable. As a professional painter the only time I use aerosol primer is as etch primer before urethane or big bare metal cut throughs before sealer.

    While this is a very solid plan there are also quite a few issues with your procedure. I'm a body man, so I'm not speaking just to speak. First off, I'd never apply any product to raw rubber without hitting it with an adhesion promoter. There's rattle can versions that do just fine. Second I wouldn't use a urethane primer. It's porous and will allow moisture to get down to the rubber. I'd use an epoxy primer instead. It will seal off your polyester coat and lock out everything. The urethane primer also tends to shrink up quite a bit, especially being black on top. It will get hot and shrink. The 3 coats of primer on something like this is unnecessary. Use any sort of guide coat and finish it off with 320. 1 tac coat and 1 good coat on top is more than enough. Finally, never use brake cleaner before applying paint. Use alcohol instead, only use alcohol.

    • @TheInfamousProject
      @TheInfamousProject  Před 2 lety +1

      We all have our own ways! I have done many sets with no issues to date (years and weather extremes etc). Theoretical vs Practical I guess. If one of them fails I'd for sure re-consider the process.

      @vondy4956 Před rokem

      Hey man, couple questions for ya if you could answer them. I found the eastwood 2k aerospray and wondered if that would be a good epoxy primer for these. Also, should I use regular 91% or denatured alcohol? I'm doing a restoration for my dad and want to do it right so it lasts.

I sprayed with SEM trim black in my HVLP spray gun, as the ones i did for my own car 12 years ago were done from an areosol can and there was minor texturing. Sprayin from a gun has the best results that ive found. Ive also started to wetsand the primer aswell. Results can be seen on my instagram if interested @d_notchback
