The Scottish parliament has 129 seats, of which 6 are non-whites. That makes it around 5% non-white, about the exact same as the actual Scottish ethnicity statistics

@@EHed-kv2wb if you’ve correctly summarised the context of Humza’s in your reply, could you then tell me what barbs said in the video and tell me if those two are the same?
You're spot on. It's even worse when people complain about lack of diversity in works of fiction. I've seen people complain about an apparent lack of diversity in the Harry Potter series, and others respond by saying that considering what UK demographics were like at the time the series is set, it's actually more diverse than could be expected, as the proportion of main characters known to be from ethnic minorities is greater than what there were in the UK population at the time. Furthermore, they're FICTIONAL CHARACTERS - they can be whatever race the author wants them to be! In fact, given how long wizards had lived separately to Muggles, there's no reason to believe that their racial or ethnic distribution would be similar anyway
The criticism around diversity in Harry Potter is usually about the names of non British characters, not the number of them. JK was pretty awful at naming characters from other cultures, they're either extremely stereotypical like Seamus Finnegan or Padma Patil, or names that would never exist like Cho Chang (Cho and Chang are names from Korean and Chinese respectively) or Kingsley Shacklebolt (the surname shacklebolt for the only Carribbean character is a not so subtle allusion to his ancestor's being enslaved). It would be like if she wrote a book where all the American characters were all called something like Chuck Johnson III.
The statistics you're using in this video is from 2011. The amount of non-white people in the younger generation is now about 12% and growing. It's even higher in cities. Humza was pointing out that there are biases in the thinking of government officials and Scots that make it harder for non-white people to assume the same positions he has. It's not nefarious in any way. When Scotland inevitably faces a 20%+ non-white population in the near future, we'll have to be aware about this issue either way.
Considering there has been no data collected since 2011, I'm curious as to where exactly you got your own stats as they seem like random numbers pulled out of thin air.
@So1asola the recent census was for England and Wales, Scotland does its own separate census the results of which hasn't been released yet. Oh and I'm Scottish, which is in the UK and how I know the stats given above are completely false.
Based Barbs This reminds me of that time someone cited _Spirited Away_ as an example of a racially diverse film because the main character is Asian. But like… it’s set in Japan, and it was made by a Japanese company, so what in the heck were you expecting?
Barbs finally goes mask off 😂 I always knew he had a bit of internalized racism in him...either way what the FM was saying is clipped out og context so...
What racism? Forcing diversity on populations doesn't mean Barbs hates minorities. He just speaks on this virtue signalling on diversity which makes no sense for a place like scotland which has almost always had a ethnically homogenous population. That doesn't mean he thinks minorities can't serve.
The issue is that people in ethnic minorities who are interested in politics apply to these roles and are instantly shut down or pressured enough to dissuade them from continuing in politics. A glass ceiling if you will, and they will try to tie you down to that box when you try to branch out. This is my experience in the uk

@@InkyminkyzizwozWhat would be your criteria for what makes "the best people" for a representative assembly? I'd be very curious. The purpose of a political democracy is to represent the people's will. To play devil's advocate, isn't it intrinsically valuable to have different perspectives in government? People of different backgrounds may not necessarily be representative of the majority, but they could have different experiences that provide value regardless and just going with the majority kinda snuffs that out, doesn't it?
Well, yes, not everyone in government should think the exact same that would be a dictatorship It’s ultimately up to the people who they vote in and the demographics of the country reflected in who they elect to government because that’s the amount of people come from Her you can still have a diversity of opinion a diversity of skin color if a country doesn’t allow a certain skin color into their parliament then that’s questionable but if a country has a low population population of a certain group of people and therefore that’s like only one member of their government of that race then that’s understandable
@@zachv but he wasn't saying the parliament should be 100% non-white. he was just implying that there should be more diversity within the scottish parliament to bring much needed support to the non-white communities that do still exist in scotland

Any of those minority people take his position
@itsmaiken There aren't any good solutions to questions of race. The only way to win is to stop playing that game, to renounce our faith in the falsified concept of race. Races never existed. We made them up for political reasons. Traits like skin color, eye shape, and hair texture are just adaptations that any human from any genetic lineage can develop. For example, Hank from Scishow. After cancer treatment, his straight hair grew back curly.
We should strive less for diversity and more for proportional representation. Members of the minority shouldn’t be the arbiters of decision over the majority.

I felt the butt hurt was more on how they treated Meghan Markle like she doesnt belong when she was simply marrying into the family like all the white people had done over time
I advocate for what I can only describe as "organic" diversity. In places that already possess ethnically diverse populations, I believe that their governments should ideally represent the population that they govern, not with strict quotas but moreso along the lines of mutual integration, respect/education (with the goal of getting a broader range of people involved with their politics), and opportunity to become involved. The idea of imposing "diversity" in a place that doesn't really have it to begin with makes no logical sense.
It's not the skin colour that matters frankly. The british prime minister is ethnic indian, but dont celebrate this because it's "diverse", if you've ever heard the man you'll quickly realise he's as much if not more tory-british than many white british.
On this note, you can’t just “force diversity to make cringey quotas” People actually have to be interested in politics and run on their own accord.

Eh, as a white American i don't really have much to say, but if the Scottish parliament has 100 seats and 4 of them aren't filled with white individuals then that's representative.
The Scottish parliament has 129 seats, of which 6 are non-whites. That makes it around 5% non-white, about the exact same as the actual Scottish ethnicity statistics
People have to “choose“ to be government officials, you can’t just force 4 “diverse seats” just to make a “racial quota”
were there even enough “non-white people“ running for representation? And of those people that were running, were they even people of good character with opinions and policies that the majority of people could agree with and vote them in? Often times, you’ll find that the answer is usually “they didn’t even exist to begin with“ -
@@GeographyNow scottland doesn't force it? Nice. America started forcing companies and the military to follow dei since 2012. Luckily the bill for government officials gets shut down every year since, but it seems only a matter of time sadly.
@@GeographyNowSame as with any job. You can't force people of particular demographics to apply just to fill some sort of quota
As always race perceived as only skin color. Why not include more traits like ginger
This took balls to post, basic logic can be controversial these days. Good for you man, earned some respect from those with brains
Can this channel not get overrun by politics, I really like it’s unbiased nature
This speech was given in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Yousaf was not First Minister at the time, and you have taken this clip out of context. Disappointing for a channel so usually on it with the facts. Also he is not the ‘former’ FM - whilst he resigned today, he remains in his post until a successor is chosen. Do better Barbs come on.
So, what you're saying is Yousef exploited a man's death (in an entirely different country) to make a point that doesn't make sense for the country Yousef is actually living in?
You did a thing here, just not the thing you thought you did.
The context you're trying to give makes his statement make even less sense.
He didn't take it out of context, he legitimately had a grievance that he felt Parliament was too white, George Floyd thing wouldn't even tie into the Scottish Parliament being too white.
@@Idk-qs4nrIt's still just below 96% White though. What are you expecting that to drop to 66% in 12 years?
@@Idk-qs4nr Scotland is 95.4% Whire & 91.8% White Scottish. WE can tell where you're from based on how you read the stats
you are officially cool in my book Barbs
Yeah, why would a non-white Scottish person have any right to point out a lack of diversity because an American CZcamsr who doesn't live in Scotland knows much better... 🤔
You dont need to be Scottish to apply common sense
Barbs this is incorrect! He didn't quit about this comment. He quit before he was pushed as he axed the Bute House agreement with Scottish Greens
He never quit because of this comment - maybe use your ears and pay attention next time!
The best part about Scotland is that it has Gordon Ramsay!
Barbs, even though I think your logic is sound, I'll just note that I watch your channel partly as a relief from the relentless politics of CZcams. Maybe don't go down this path.
Fair, though geopolitics often treads around that
Demographics are not political. Scotland is literally 96% White.
Im glad he calls it out when politics get ridiclious
I'm just curious who will be the next First Minister. Any fish themed candidates in the running this time? :)
I believe the non-white population in Scotland is higher today (the Asian population in particular.) Regardless, I think you took the clip out of context. I understand where you’re coming from, but I think your anger around this seems misplaced
It wasn't out of context though. Its simply poor virtue signalling on diversity made during the tragic death of George Floyd.
@@EHed-kv2wb if you’ve correctly summarised the context of Humza’s in your reply, could you then tell me what barbs said in the video and tell me if those two are the same?
In Ireland our former Taoiseach (like a PM) Leo Varadkar, who is half Indian, said Ireland is too white in its government and public sectors. IRELAND.
@@RealUlrichLelandAgain, they're FICTIONAL CHARACTERS - they can be called whatever she wants them to be!
Ah, Humza Yousless... I think Scotland knows LESS about him after a year as First Minister than previous to him taking the job.
Sure
Considering there has been no data collected since 2011, I'm curious as to where exactly you got your own stats as they seem like random numbers pulled out of thin air.
@@UHS840 you don’t live in the uk do you. The was a census recently within the last couple years.
@So1asola the recent census was for England and Wales, Scotland does its own separate census the results of which hasn't been released yet.

This reminds me of that time someone cited _Spirited Away_ as an example of a racially diverse film because the main character is Asian. But like… it’s set in Japan, and it was made by a Japanese company, so what in the heck were you expecting?
Great point
Barbs finally goes mask off 😂 I always knew he had a bit of internalized racism in him...either way what the FM was saying is clipped out og context so...
That’s the exact opposite of racism
*of context
What racism? Forcing diversity on populations doesn't mean Barbs hates minorities. He just speaks on this virtue signalling on diversity which makes no sense for a place like scotland which has almost always had a ethnically homogenous population. That doesn't mean he thinks minorities can't serve.
The issue is that people in ethnic minorities who are interested in politics apply to these roles and are instantly shut down or pressured enough to dissuade them from continuing in politics. From my own anecdotal experience, it sometimes feels like people want you to fit in a certain box. A glass ceiling if you will, and they will try to tie you down to that box when you try to branch out. This is my experience in the uk
unbelievable!!! glad you exposes this phony
Nice to see Barbs is still sensible
Good on you Barbs. Making a good point without being too mean.
He’s still FM. His resignation won’t take effect until they elect a replacement.
Thank you. This kind of thing bothers me so much.
The purpose of a congress is to represent the population. If the population is 96% of a single race, then the representative congress should be 96% that same race. Obviously this doesnt work for tiny fractions of groups since yiu cant have a .1% person, but still.
Or maybe it should have the best PEOPLE regardless of demographic?
@@InkyminkyzizwozWhat would be your criteria for what makes "the best people" for a representative assembly? I'd be very curious. The purpose of a political democracy is to represent the people's will. If you imagine it to be to select "the best people" to rule, you might be thinking of a bureaucratic system where politicians come to power by following a meritocratic career ladder rather than from being elected by the people, like China.

@@itsmaiken it’s up to the people who they vote for just throwing a bunch of random people in there won’t actually fix anything. These places are probably more poor because of the people who run them than they are the Scottish parliament. And I doubt this guy really does to fix it he probably be better. Any of those minority people take his position
It’s not as if all Scots think the same, and all minorities think the same. You can 100% have diversity of opinion without diversity of skin color.
Just simple logic.
