Soon as you pulled that front panel for the fan compartment, I was screaming run away. Been through that nightmare, gotta wish who ever designed that mess, was sitting in a pich black attic, at 10:00 p.m., then telling the homeowner can't fix it, till parts show up, specially when cold. Hang in there.

It's obvious that the engineers designed this system to be the most reliable system ever made because they sure didn't design it to be worked on.
Sometimes factory parts has to be done. Rest well this weekend one and all.

As soon as I saw the flue going out the opposite side from the evaporator my heart sunk. Must be the worst designed furnace I've ever worked on.

It's totally amazing how these units are manufactured..knowing that there being installed in tight spaces..not thought out very well
That design is so frusterating, the designers paid no attention to any kind of maintenance.
Try getting the blower motor out of a wall hung mini split head unit.

Because blower motors never go bad. I have little respect for many engineers. If you can’t do the job, you shouldn’t be designing the equipment!
@John-dp3ln it's almost never the engineers fault, they naturally want to OVER engineer stuff, its their bosses that tell them to design something that is cheap to make and will last long enough.
they don't want them to be fixed they want people buying new ones

Tip: get a rechargeable head lamp from Harbor Freight (28$) with the two year warranty for 8 bucks, it’ll make what you’re doing easier for us to see
What a PITA!
In my 45 years of service, this kind of attempts to retrofit and fake it to make it has always been a MAJOR pain in the arse! In the long run, the right factory parts are the ONLY way to properly get the JOB done. I have had to tell the paying customer that I tried with what I had on my service truck and that they would have to wait for my return with the factory parts. Great work Curtis but we can't be the hero on every call.

Wow, I felt your pain on this one. I actually replaced the blower motor on this exact same model last summer. But I was able to use existing mounts. Attic was a toasty 130 degrees. I was getting flashbacks when you struggled to get it out of that cabinet. Very poor design. Love the videos!

That thing is fighting you the whole way. I know you get to a point to where you just spend too much time trying to improvise. You could have bought some large L brackets, or small shelf brackets and made them work, but all the time shopping, drilling holes and such, it is just not worth it. You are doing it the right way. A dummy like me would have gone shopping. Also your supplier may have had a different or larger belly strap or whatever you call it. Like I said, you are doing it right.
i always use three ear or four ear brackets but never seen that yet but now i know that there are some blower housing that wont work with the after market brackets
I would really like to meet the engineer who designed that thing to ask him just one question....What were you smoking that day....I want some.
They do it on purpose do you have to buy OEM part's. But now they do make a belly band to adapt to that design. Goodmsn motors are spot welded to the motors.

I guess in SC you can do fine without heat, but up in Maryland, it's not as easy in the winter. This is the biggest drawback to requiring factor only parts.

If I’m going to an attic or crawl space and the blower doesn’t work I put caps in my service bag -5/7.5/10/12.5/15uf

If you already have a torch and know how to solder a line. (Takes some skill)Just carry some brass rods and some flux and braze things like those brackets. You'll be glad you did. Brazing is a little different skill but easier than soldering lines.

I took an L today working on one of these furnaces. I thought it would be a simple blower motor but then I ran into the screwed up oem bracket
And you could have stuck your phone in there and took a picture beat the hell out of pulling that dust field fan out
What an incredibly stupid design. Have to remove an exhaust (passing through return air no less, one tiny leak and people die), have to completely disassemble every thing just to get the blower out, AND you are forced to use OEM motor and mounts.
If I was that customer, just the exhaust would make me tell Curtis to forget the repair, replace the whole unit with a better one.
That family of furnaces were available as either a down flow/horizontal (the one shown) or a upflow/horizontal which didn't have the flue pipe routed through the blower compartment. The latter would have been the better choice for the original installer.
A 15 mfd capacitor is unusual for a 1/2 hp motor. The Rescue motor that was in the truck stock took either a 5 or 10 mfd. On a previous service call, did the tech install the wrong capacitor? If so, a quick call to the Ruud distributor with the model and serial number of the furnace would have yielded the answer. On startup, that motor sounded more like a shaded pole motor than a split capacitor model. Perhaps the wrong capacitor was installed.

Hey Mate..when you have a situation where you have to wait for parts..do you try to keep the system operational for the customer..untill the parts come in?? Do you put everything back together as beat as. You can..and when you do all that work..do you ever have a customer who don't want any further work done?? Or are homeowners pretty good about allowing you to finish recommended repairs??

What do you mean? It's B vent. That's the best stuff for 80% flues. Most guys run 26 gauge, or 30 if they're hacks. B vent is the standard for low efficiency.
That looked monumentally irritating. How old is that system? Factory parts being no doubt overpriced, is it worth saving?

Besides being hard to get the blower housing out, why when the housing is that dirty on the inside, wouldn't you use the spray foaming cleaner you use outside on the coil? Wouldn't that be easier and do a better job than just water?
The simple maintenance things that should be universal manufactures just have to make them proprietary just to get a few more dollars and make life miserable for the homeowner and repairman.
Rescue motors are good for emergencies but for the long term, OEM motors are far superior.
I think it should be mandatory that engineers work in the field at minimum 5 years before they’re allowed to design equipment.

What a POS! When I saw how the capacitor was mounted and the transformer not to mention the electrical junk, I knew there was going to be a problem. At least it wasn't summer and the sweat dripping on the job.
