- This may possibly be one of the fastest hostage rescues conducted. I bet they were not expecting to see big American patches, tactical gear, and giants standing on their behalf. This is another compelling story of the effectiveness of this unit and how capable they are.

Shawn - PLEASE read WARFIGHTER: THE STORY OF AN AMERICAN FIGHTING MAN about Jesse Johnson, and please welcome co-author Alex Holstein on your podcast. He would be a fantastic guest. Book won a major MWSA award and is being taught at West Point. Holstein is LSE-educated on the KGB and is incredibly articulate and knowledgeable on security issues and the substance of the book.

Should do one on Major General Gary Harrell-- he just passed away and was the commander of all your guest..he is laid to rest at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City Tn

Chris has to be one of the most well adjusted, people you've interviewed. Highly articulate, well polished, no crazy in his eyes. Dude is cool as the come.
Cool maybe an understatement
@@grunt9131yeah he talks like he’s some sorta superhero that doesn’t realize he’s a superhero.

Hulk doesn’t know either 👍
He comes across as a nice geezer.
I'm no trick cyclist but I'd have no problems leaving kids with lad.
He sounds absolutely harmless, and if you are not a bastard I think he is.
He's the kind of teacher you want.
Kind, soft spoken articulate, and he can bend you like David Beckham if he wanted.
These are the men we need working with kids.
The D-Boys are by far the most entertaining, enlightening, and intellectual interviews you’ve had on so far. Not taking anything away from anyone else, but these guys always show you why they are the best.
They aren't the best. I heard some Delta interviews where they said they almost couldn't get into the Army because their ASVAB of 40 was too low. You have to be dumb as a rock to have an ASVAB of 40. Everyone in my BUD/S had ASVABs of high 90s.
@@kevinl8440 I would have to disagree. You never hear of Delta leaving to go to SEALs. Delta recruits the best from all of the other branches.
@@kevinl8440 here come the navy guys. CAG is the apex. No dispute
@@kevinl8440 I call bullshit. I don't believe anything of what you said. SEALs are tier 2 yet you're making a comparison between them and a SMU. Get real. CAG is the most capable unit/organization in the world and for good reason.
@@Chris-xv7wd I mean, when compared to the regular SEAL teams, sure. But CAG and DEVGRU are two sides of the same coin.
I could listen to him and his stories all day long.
Agreed bud! Enjoy
I was listening to the Bob Poras episode thinking "there's no way this guy is still alive" but as it turns out... you can up your game :D :D :D :D
every combat vet has stories like these. If you see an old guy with a vet hat on, just go up and ask him to tell you a war story.
@@grogdizzy5814 no, sorry- delta isn’t the same.
Agreed, he’s articulate and a great storyteller
I love moments like this: two SF guys sharing stories cracking each other up, having a good time. That's the America you fought for.
Shawn isn’t SF but I get your point.
Shawn was a SEAL, not SF.
SF = GB. SOF is all special ops
Don't forget what they don't talk about the deep dark shit like ptsd night terrors and the voices in your head... the souls you took following you around all the time.
@@kledus420smith8 Depends on the person. Cant boo hoo over killing a enemy in war. Do what u have to cause war is hell. Dont lose sleep over it. Those souls are your slaves in the after life lol.
This man is so calm and well spoken. He could literally be anyone out there. A normal person. But he could switch to be a killing machine. That's power. He deserves his own podcast!
Deserves WAY MORE than a podcast.
Articulate, well polished and a warrior. What a pleasure and honor having these videos uploaded for all to hear.
Thanks Shawn for this channel.
Wishing you the best and continued success going forward!

And humble....
All true. The funny thing is he is such a prime example of a man. Even after all hes done, nothing left to prove, he still cant accept the hair pattern and rocks the comb over. I wish i could give him my hair to thank him for his service.
I served with the 2nd Marine Regt at Al Asad AB in ‘05 in support of a Delta team (yes, I said that correctly). The approach was novel. We would do conventional operations to force HVTs to relocate, they had to use phones for arrangements and when we got a fix on one Delta would raid the location that night. It was the craziest thing, 2,000 guys in support of about 30 but it worked like a charm.
As a veteran myself. I love to see a man like this still have a “ empathy and sense of humour“ to everyone he’s come across and what he’s done. It’s people like this vets should Be listening too.
This dude is my favorite out of all of Shawn’s guests. I could listen to him talk all day. Amazing.
Without a doubt this series with MSGT Van Sant were the best combat veteran interviews I have ever witnessed! 🇺🇸
Van sant is so badass , ISIS tell night stories about him
Dj shipley is my favorite pod of all time
If you passed this dude in a supermarket the last thing you’d think is…Delta Force Operator….the age old saying is true! Don’t judge a book by its cover!!
Exactly! It's a trip. I would've thought anywhere from teacher to wall street and in between but not a delta force operator lol he's a bad ass guy though salute to him
He looks like he would sell me a TV at Best Buy
It was great to see Mr. VanSant's genuine laughter, which comes at various points in this interview but specifically the end of this clip. I can appreciate that he's seen a hell of a lot, so it's great to watch him laugh and smile.
Holy shit Shaun, this is some of your best stuff. More from the Unit guys.
“It seems like you guys killed an entire deck of cards.”
“Yeah….easy.”
You said deck of cards...flashbacks...all over the news at that time.
Right!
Living history. Thank you.
I wish my father could have had this kind of interview in 1967 or so. His stories of Vietnam were few and short of detail. He was a USMC artillery battery commander and aerial observer. I heard three.
One comedic one about… reappropriating… a generator form the Air Force to power an Enlisted Club at their base. It’s how I learned what can be done with a clipboard, the right attitude, and finding the dumbest person to talk to that can help you get your job done. It worked well enough for me in the 90’s Army.
Another was a recurring dream of being shot down and struggling to get a door gun off its mount as the VC approached; only to wake with his hand wrapped in the sheets.
The third was very real, only told once when I was in my 30’s, and not long before he died. It was about how I was a minute or so away from not being born.
I’d love to hear that story again - but in a way such as these stories that you are curating; peer to peer, soldier to soldier, in detail without the filter that he thought I needed.
I can watch you interview and listen to Chris for hours. His stories are amazing. Thank you and him for all that you did. May God bless you both.
Incredibly impressive individual in so many different ways. Great interview.
This gentleman is such a humble and intelligent warrior. Very impressive
Shawn BRINGS IT every time with his guest!!! Keep up the good work.
Delta is so much more interesting, capable, better at keeping stories etc within the community & way more professional outside of the job it seems after hearing a ton of stories etc from seals, devgru, rangers, green berets, air force PJs etc. Would love to hear some stories from a few more SMU guys if possible.
DEVGRU is a SMU
@@paultiplea devgru and Delta are tier 1 .. there's a difference & actual Special Mission Units. Been a few guys from them who have done podcasts and it's a group of guys from different teams , units etc.
@@C-24-Brandan I know that, I just commented because it sounded like you were lumping DEVGRU in with the rest that are not SMUs.
In my days as a grunt E-5/6 (early 80s) I had a similar opinion of some old UDT guys I met. Super helpful, generous with their time, told great stories without ever being boastful. No egos. Straight up legit.
This guy is my favorite so far 🙌 Would love to hear more stories from him!
This man has the most clean cut unassuming polite nature it's so impressive what he has achieved and experienced. This guy is the epitome of a special forces soldier. Easy listening but fascinating. Hello from Ireland 🇮🇪
Can you please do a cct or 24th sts guys? They’re complete mysteries but listening about their perspective working with all branches has got to be CRAZY INTERESTING
These are the true heroes. Yet the first to be forgotten when they come home. It’s a shame that everything they fought for is being destroyed. God bless all of our veterans.

Guys, I can't say that I get what you live while you do what you do but it feels like an elite hockey team that plays for keeps. I got to the elite level in hockey, I know what its like to feel a team become two, three, ten times the sum of its parts in certain situations. But, I can't imagine adding to that picture that someone dies for every goal, someone's wounded for every assist, and every play you make really matters to, dictates the, actual lived lives of the people around and in fact across the globe to some extent. On top of that, you don't necessarily know whether the ream owner is a patriot of a puffed prick. I met a Canadian special forces guy in a trauma (PTSD) treatment center and I understand him a lot better after listening to you guys. Thanks... hope my metaphor isn't insulting, it's just me grasping for understanding which I think is about the only thing I can do to contribute.
Love the Delta Operators because its so rare 👍
Thank you and your crew for taking out these bastards.
This guy seems to be very mentally stable and content/ at peace with his experience with the teams and fighting over there. Wouldn’t have a clue that was his past I bet if I met him in public. Interesting considering some guys are the complete opposite, just my observation and makes you think
I’ve loved this channel im since I’ve found it!
Non-Ranger goes straight Delta and does the Q course just for the fuck of it. This is why you never discount or hold guys back in your ranks a few of them are capable of anything they set their mind to.

Chris is just awesome
Shawn, when do you think you can bring some guys from SOAR. My younger brother was apart of the 160th as a Avionics Electrical Tech. and of course down plays his role. I did not even know that they existed, Night Stalkers. I read Eric L. Haney's book The Unit and this is where I got his insight into these brave men. Last chapter of his book is dedicated to these men. He called them the best of the best pilots, crews, etc. Just an idea.
Look up combat story on here. The host is a former Apache pilot. He has had a bunch of 160th aviators on. The interviews are great. The one with Steve Lapping is fantastic.
To be a basic trained guy you hear that time 9 min rescue. That’s just wild that shows why are guys are trained the best and have the minds to be the best.
Chris is the coolest guy ever.
Great interview. My God Father is a former Chief of Staff / Dep CDR of the Unit.
Wow what a small world I was in Balad and once he mentioned the mission. Most likely I saw him in the compound and had no idea who he was. Well there was a lot of bad asses in that compound most wore civilian clothes or a mixture of uniforms.
Thanks
For 9 minutes in the trunk they were the safest iraqis in a 50 mile radius being watched over by members of one of the most elite unit in the world.
I wonder if they ever learned who exactly rescued them that day.
Shawn Ryan Show is the best........no if and buts or maybes!🎉😢😂😮😅😊
Can you get a CCT or PJ from 24th STS on the show? Would be awesome to hear some of their stories and their training pipeline
Love these stories of our Tier 1 operators but I feel like the aviation crews (160th SOAR and others) often go unmentioned!!!
The Team House podcast got some stories of the 160th. Check out their channel if you want to listen to interview from pilots of the Nightstalkers.
I would love to hear more stories from his AFO time. That's literally the 1% of the 1%. From what I understand, you have to be invited to tryout for CAG's AFO squadron.
I'm not sure exactly where but I believe I've seen Chris VanSant either on deployment or back in Bragg. I was in USASOC from 2005-2017 and I swear I've either met him or at least been in the same room with him. In Iraq 03-04 I was sliced to a CAG team for about 4 months but throughout my career I got to do some training with D teams, but for the life of me I can't remember exactly where I've seen Chris before. In JSOC we deploy with a variety of elements, and while conducting missions you get to hone your skills from guys who are the sharpest of the tools. I have two buddies who were in Delta, and it could have been at an event with them but wish I could remember exactly where. Pretty cool to see people I've been around but never had the opportunity to actually speak to tell their experiences that I was/wasn't part of. Chewed the same dirt at the same time but different elements. I did have the opportunity to meet Tim Kennedy back in 2008 at KAF when I was with 7th GRP and he was at the CMD HQ and he was with one of guys talking. Pretty cool dude from what I can remember from the 1-2 min conversation we had.

Compared to those they were fighting, absolutely.
Well yeah, of course that's his perspective. And it's obviously going to be the perspective of the majority of people watching these interviews of mainly US military veterans conducted by a former SEAL. If you feel differently, you're probably on the wrong channel.
Hey Shawn I respect and love your honesty opinion and balls to have a show like this!!
I was wondering if you would consider having David Eubank a Former SF and Ranger guy on your podcast.
