With the amount of energy some dudes obsess over these guys and money they spent over years on gear and coseplay they could have spent the same time training, join the military and apply for the units or at least maybe join a tier 2 unit. Why not actually attempt to join something you have such a hard passion for such things if you have opportunity?

I consider them good friends and they are nothing like Hollywood seals. Then again most seals that write books are devgru. I joke with them all the time saying they act way too much like a green beret, chill and quiet professionals. They have good sense of humor and very humble. They are willing to teach and also take advice due to their transition phase back into the civilian sector. The ones that realize that what they did in the military don’t really mean anything back in the civilian sector. It’s what u know presently that matters. It’s really a humbling experience when im just an army vet and a SEAL thanking and asking for advice. I personally know an army SF, ranger and reached out to Tom satterly. He is by far one of the coolest operators I got a chance to briefly talk to. I personally don’t know any devgru guys and don’t really care. End of the day it comes down to how does that person treat me as a civilian. I graduated grad school with a marine raider and we bumped heads. Guy was a transitioning E-8 still with that military mind set. I was an E-5 with way more civilian and govt work experience but he was stuck on being him. He didn’t like it that I confronted him about it but we kept things professional not arguing like high school kids. I take from his statement that when he says ST6 and the unit are interchangeable means you will get the same result. So, over the years my guess is that these groups have made adjustments to how they do things. It is also noted that when interviewing guys who served say in the early 2000’s to say 2015, they can only speak to their experience of the time frame when they served. Here's another thing that gets overlooked, you can go from high school, to Navy bootcamp to BUDs, pass and become a SEAL. You can't go from high school to Army bootcamp to Delta selection course to Delta. What they said about DEVGRU selection also having an element of "it's who you know" involved...that's not how it works in CAG.

    What VanSant said without saying is that the units are very similar, and the unit who gets the mission is a highly political process of who is in most favor with the politicians at the time etc. It's no accident that the Navy SEALs came online when they did because Kennedy was a navy guy. Politics plays a greater role than people talk about. And the role of the military is to carry out the policy of the US govt, so there's the relationship between which unit gets picked and for what mission.

      Well, you’re wrong. What’s new?
      1.) The gentleman you’re referring to who was in ST6 and wanted to come back after 9/11 and joined CAG, he is on record as stating that CAG selection was much more difficult and the CAG guys are more professional and are ahead of ST6 in their tactics and mission sets. He is also on record saying he wished he would have known about CAG much earlier in his career.
      2.) The statement about ST6 members joining CAG, but no CAG members joining ST6…he’s not referring to LEAVING CAG to join ST6, he is referring to the lateral transfer between the two Tier 1 units. There is an application process where you can apply to laterally transfer to ST6 or CAG from your respective unit and work within their unit for several years under a special contract. He is saying that there have been multiple ST6 members who have transferred to CAG and even more who have applied from ST6, but you have never seen a CAG operator laterally transfer to ST6. There was a time when JSOC enacted a deal to improve the training and to improve the capabilities of our Tier 1 units that resulted in CAG and ST6 members embedding within each others units in order to share TTPs and get everyone on the same page and build a working relationship between the two units.
      3.) If you listen to any of the ST6 guys who talk about the Green Team selection process, they take the majority of guys who make it to their tryouts. They are on record saying that it is a big political ordeal where some guys may be the best of the best, but if they pissed off a ST6 member or weren’t liked, then they would already be pre-selected to fail before they ever get the chance to prove themselves. There are guys who don’t deserve or have the skills to be in the ST6 unit, but because of who they are and how well they’re liked, they are accepted into the teams. The attrition rate is very low. Lastly, if a soldier is able to make it to Delta, there’s no way in hell they are dropping from BUD/S and they could easily make the cut for the Green Teams…

    • @michaelscott33
      @michaelscott33 Před 6 měsíci +3

      Additionally, the tactics CAG uses is much more difficult and advanced than ST6. For example, when they are assaulting a building, CAG assaults from 360 degrees and from the top and bottom. ST6 assaults a building from front to back, top to bottom.

    Everyone who brings up DevGru going Delta and not vice versa doesn't understand why this is the case and it's not the gotcha that they think it is. The reason Unit guys don't go to the DevGru is that they aren't qualified as a walk on to DevGru selection, but DevGru guys are qualified as walk on to Unit selection. And it's not about which is better, it's about SQT. Everyone focuses on BUD/s, but they don't grasp the fact that BUD/s is just a minor blip in becoming a SEAL. There's another close to 2 years of SEAL Qualification Training, that is a requirement to become a SEAL, no matter how much of an Apex Meat Eater you are. The guy that was a DevGru operator that reenlisted Army to go to the Unit when 9/11 kicked off explained why he went that route. Some of his buddies that were in the know told him that the Unit was already involved and that would be the quickest way for him to get in the action, so he went Unit instead of going back to DevGru.
    At the end of the day, who's better really comes down to one thing: Who's closer and more ready to go on a particular mission. Either organization will get the job done just fine.

    An interesting spread of views to hear as a Brit! Thank you!
    I think the earlier contributions sum it up quite well. Delta learnt the craft from the most experienced and professional outfit in Malaya. The UK/New Zealand/Rhodesian SAS. Who proved that outsiders can defeat an enemy in the most inhospitable terrain on earth, the Jungle (closely followed by Wales and Scotland - wet, very cold and muddy!).
    Delta chose individuals who can operate alone, selection is more lone based, rather than the team based selection process of the Navy. No muscle Mary's that stick out necessary. British are shorter, skinny (some even appear fat); but can out run, and out think the best of them, with very little support, money or technology dependent. It is those qualities that the Unit has adopted, along with a broader selection pool.
    The UK SBS and SAS interchange, and select from all units (although the SAS mainly tend to come from the army/RAF Regiment) One big difference, is that many believe the SBS are a tougher more secret outfit, as they can do most of the what the SAS do (RM Mountain Leader course is the longest course in the military); but they then have to do the water based stuff.. climbing oil rigs in the North Sea with heavy kit; kayaking and carrying that kit a very long way!!! Tend to be more of a secretive unit than the SAS. An older unit than the SAS too!The SAS excelled in Mobility Troop which led to the most significant engagement of the first Iraq War. Zero 6 Bravo, 50 SBS a Delta member 1000 miles behind enemy lines; an escape and invasion from 100000 Republican Guard raining down on them.
    I would also add, that UK SF due to size, rotate between the different troops - mobility, Air, Mountain and Boat troop; whilst also rotating on anti terrorism duties. Lots of tools in their box.

      @@JG-ib7xk Yes you are right, the SAS have Boat Troop which supported the special boat service in the Falklands.
      however, the comparison between the two units is significant and acknowledged by SAS members. Firstly, SBS go on and do continuation training in those skills before they are badged. they operate far more frequently and more extensively due to their geography at Poole! A lot more work in submarine, drift diving and dealing with the oil rig/boat rescue; to a much higher standard. Significantly more work using the Klippers and associated kayaks like Nautiraid… members that I have met often comment, they have great upper body strength due to the nature of their work and in some cases, post mountain leaders from the Royal Marines.. , obviously get far more exposure to training maritime skills compared to SAS who are landlocked!
