Pockets and Sexism | Emma Harner | TEDxYouth@Lincoln

  • Women's clothing has small pockets, maybe even no pockets! Emma Harner thinks it’s ridiculous. Over time, she has noticed how clothing companies will make virtually the same pair of pants for boys and girls, but the girls’ style has three less inches of pocket. It’s infuriating and extremely inconvenient for women!
    Living with small pockets has been an unnecessary annoyance that every woman in Emma’s life has had to deal with, but no one talks about it. During her talk, Emma speaks about how small or non-existent pockets are an indication of greater issues and inequalities for women in today’s society.
    Emma is a high school student. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    The was no such thing as fainting rooms. And corsets never EVER caused shifting in organs. There are many serving stencils and corsets from this period that prove that they were not any less comfortable than a bra. In fact, that was what corsets where used for chest and back support. Not to suppress women.

      @Amelie Glenn then sew pockets into your own clothes. It's easy and cheap. If you don't like the way things are, change them. Including and especially if you don't like the way clothes are. You can alter them. That's why God gave us needles, thread, and scissors.
      A lack of pockets isn't holding anyone back. Mindsets are.

    • @plzleavemealone9660
      @plzleavemealone9660 Před 3 lety +1

      @Amelie Glenn
      First of all, that makes no sense. Men usually need big pockets because it's not socially acceptable for men to wear purses so the ones with the disadvantage are if anything, men.
      And if you didn't care about looking fashionable then just y'know... buy mens jeans? It's not that hard to just go into the mens section.
      People are really making something this easily solved so complicated.

      @@thechosenone9769 It would be easier and cheaper to not have to worry about buying clothes that you have to spend extra time modifying just because there is no good alternative. Besides, sewing is not easy, it requires time to learn (yes, people aren't born with the skills required to sew pockets, and that includes women), and most people don't want to have to do that.

I used to work at an elementary school as a crossing guard, on the playground, and in the lunchroom, and there is no way to do those jobs while carrying a purse! Companies follow the consumer market. Women make 80% of consumer decisions. Women make almost 100% of the female clothing market consumer decisions. If your pockets are too small, it's because you bought clothes with small pockets. If women's clothes have smaller pockets in general, it's because the companies that make these clothes are following the consumer trends to increase profit. Men are generally also less concerned with how they look, while women, generally are more concerned with how they look. This is an evolutionary response to attract a mate. Most women also carry handbags, with multiple times the storage of both men and women's pockets. You're not a victim. Pocket size has zero to do with sexism.
