Pockets and Sexism | Emma Harner | TEDxYouth@Lincoln

- Women's clothing has small pockets, maybe even no pockets! Emma Harner thinks it’s ridiculous. Over time, she has noticed how clothing companies will make virtually the same pair of pants for boys and girls, but the girls’ style has three less inches of pocket. It’s infuriating and extremely inconvenient for women!
Living with small pockets has been an unnecessary annoyance that every woman in Emma’s life has had to deal with, but no one talks about it. During her talk, Emma speaks about how small or non-existent pockets are an indication of greater issues and inequalities for women in today’s society.
Emma is a high school student. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I have been declaring this for years! I refuse to buy any clothing that does not include functional pockets.
yep and the back pockets are just slightly "bigger" but theyre a horrible choice because anyone could take your stuff and i have one pair of jean shorts and they have big pockets big enough for my phone and it is heaven on earth
I just watched a video about pockets and why they should be bigger
Yes, that is what you did
I just saw a woman who whines and cries about supposed sexism and made me think about how most American women are no different from her.
Greatest and most accurate thing I've ever seen
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen
Pocket prejudice is real....not to be laughed at either.
I'd go the extra length to say that I also want my pockets to have a zipper so as not to get pick pocketed, I get that at eastern Mountain sports.
And don’t get me started on the back pocket
We stan a queen.
I remember I put my phone in a back pocket, and couldn’t walk around without it sliding out
This is so sad, can we call the police
All the haters are men with large pockets.
The was no such thing as fainting rooms. And corsets never EVER caused shifting in organs. There are many serving stencils and corsets from this period that prove that they were not any less comfortable than a bra. In fact, that was what corsets where used for chest and back support. Not to suppress women.
you go emma!
Ummm women in the west in today live in a free market and women make 80% of consumer choices .....women tend to by form fitting and things that look good before function. If it sold better it wouldn't be that way
Not this again
represent the youth ❤️
Fashion over function.
Or the fashion industry and the bag making and purse industry work together to keep women buying purses and bags that cost too much. just a theory. I dont think it had anything to do with sexism.
@@thorfinnoars1443 so why aren’t the briefcase and fashion companies working together as well? It’s not the companies, it’s the people who buy them
@@nuclearglory0363 well when all the options that are there are these options you can really blame people for buying what's there and socially acceptable to wear
@@thorfinnoars1443 yes you can, Typically the men’s and women’s sections aren’t separated by giant walls and barbed wire, women just tend to wear things to show their figure more, it’s just human (and really any mammal) psychology
@@nuclearglory0363 the giant wall with barbwire is social acceptance. but first what's your argument what do you disagree with me on?
I don’t know how this is relevant but the only Ted I’ve seen from my area was how to chop logs
Im a guy self taught on a garage sale sewing machine that has often added pockets to work shirts or changed other things I didnt like about my clothes. Why the ted talk instead of doing something like taking 5 min to sew a bigger pocket on. The conspiracies are getting out of hand.
These days they seem to let anyone talk
No doubt millieninals are most saddest people on planet earth followed by Gen Z
Jesus Christ man this video is the definition of “First world problems”
@@ok-et8vz No, I live in third world and I have the same problem with pockets.
HAHAHA I LOVE IT
literally 24/7 probably going insane to try to find something to complain about. so many flaws.
why is this a big deal
@Amelie Glenn then sew pockets into your own clothes. It's easy and cheap. If you don't like the way things are, change them. Including and especially if you don't like the way clothes are. You can alter them. That's why God gave us needles, thread, and scissors.
A lack of pockets isn't holding anyone back. Mindsets are.
@Amelie Glenn
First of all, that makes no sense. Men usually need big pockets because it's not socially acceptable for men to wear purses so the ones with the disadvantage are if anything, men.
And if you didn't care about looking fashionable then just y'know... buy mens jeans? It's not that hard to just go into the mens section.
People are really making something this easily solved so complicated.
@@thechosenone9769 It would be easier and cheaper to not have to worry about buying clothes that you have to spend extra time modifying just because there is no good alternative. Besides, sewing is not easy, it requires time to learn (yes, people aren't born with the skills required to sew pockets, and that includes women), and most people don't want to have to do that.
@Amelie Glenn advantage??? It’s a damn pocket 💀
if she would talk about about sexism its self then ok but lmfao she went all in the pockets damn
Pockets are sexist lmfao. Talk about scrape the barrel
Women have handbags and purses. Men do not. Men like to have pockets for different things or pocket watches.
4:15 did u even watch the whole thing lmao
Do you not know or not care that some women have jobs where we can't carry a purse? I used to work at an elementary school as a crossing guard, on the playground, and in the lunchroom, and there is no way to do those jobs while carrying a purse! I needed pockets, for as you put it "different things" like tissues, cough drops, lost objects that kids dropped, etc.
@@loridale5930 I haven't said women can't or shouldn't have pockets. Pockets are great and everyone should have them. I don't design clothing but if I did we'd all have pockets lol 😛
Companies follow the consumer market. Women make 80% of consumer decisions. Women make almost 100% of the female clothing market consumer decisions. If your pockets are too small, it's because you bought clothes with small pockets. If women's clothes have smaller pockets in general, it's because the companies that make these clothes are following the consumer trends to increase profit. Men are generally also less concerned with how they look, while women, generally are more concerned with how they look. This is an evolutionary response to attract a mate. Most women also carry handbags, with multiple times the storage of both men and women's pockets. You're not a victim. Pocket size has zero to do with sexism.
Sandro literally did you even watch it she talked about the purses
Literally
Literally
Literally
Yes I did.
smart girl.
Then dont buy skinny jeans your making your own problems
