  • We have a new exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum! Discover the at Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California History. The temporary exhibit is on display until June 2nd!
Tattooed & Tenacious features a collection of stories, images, works of art and more from today’s Sacramento-area tattooed women - and women artists - who bring history full circle. In this video, our Museum Director, Delta, discusses one of the women discussed in the exhibit, Aimee Crocker.
Aimee Crocker was born in 1863 in Sacramento to Edwin and Margaret Crocker, the founders of what is today the Crocker Art Museum. The Crocker family was "exceedingly wealthy as Aimee put it, and her inheritance was estimated ar about $10 million. Preferring worldlier pursuits over a domestic life, Aimee used her wealth to finance her freedom in a time when most women did not have such a luxury. A woman of progressive attitudes toward sexuality, her then radical beliefs wore into her life, with five marriages, love affairs across the globe, and three tattoos. Aimee was the regular focus of the scandal-hungry press.

I loved reading about Aimee's life in the book 'And I'd do it Again'. What a life she led!
