What was the most unexpectedly valuable thing you've ever seen on Antiques Roadshow?
When Antiques Roadshow first aired as a US show on Boston PBS, there was an episode that featured at the end a British family, whom brought in a wooden cradle for a baby. It had some sort of cartouche that read they -- whomever originally owned the cradle, were related to the British Monarchy. The Cradle was worth 1 or 2 million. I've Never seen the clip from the episode, online. Can you find it?

I still remember the time a man brought in a Navaho Chieftan's blanket from the 1860s, which hung for years over the back of a chair in his home. The appraiser called it a national tresure and said its value was at least half a million dollars.

And it sold for over 1 million. You can see it in the Detroit Institute of Arts!

Friend of mine was doing the demolition on a house with his uncle and they found a bottle of 1936 Hennessy cognac sealed ...... they drank it.
Later they discovered that it was worth well over $1,000.00

You missed out so much information. The reason that jade collection was so valuable was due to the fact one of the largest pieces had an imperial inscription on the Base
So what was all the other information he missed out seeing as you only pointed out 1 piece?
Yeah the ad for the show suggests the bowl alone, the thin simple one is worth 710k to over 1.4M, but it's the entire collection that is worth that much. I hope she sold it, no sense in hanging onto it
@@SnowbordrWRX What was the size of that bowl featured on the AR television commercial? The ad showed it passing thru various stages of it's life w/ diff owners. It appears to be 10 or 12' inches wide there. But seeing the bowl sitting in front of the lady's arm, far left, it looks to be much smaller, almost by half. * The commercial shows it filled with cheese puffs used as a snack serving bowl.

I remember this show being so popular because everyone with out cable got this channel for free. Everyone had this show on. It was a very interesting show. So many memories as this show played in the background

To all the people saying they should destroy the rhino cups I say what a waste. These are artifacts from the 17th and 18th century from when the world was a much different place. People would take an animal for all they're parts not just the horns. People kill an elephant to feed a village type of thing. I'm not advocating for modern killing for horns but these items are gorgeous pieces of history that should be preserved. If we destroyed everything that had a negative impact on something or someone else we wouldn't have much left.

I understand your reasoning but saving those peices and holding them at such an extraordinary value only perpetuates the black market for rhino horns even more because they're worth a lot of money, and when something is worth a lot of money people will do horrible things to get it. Rhinos are killed in horrific ways, and their numbers are dwindling.
Mother's eyes are gauged out while their babies helplessly watch. Poachers saw her horns off while she's blind and leave her for dead with the baby desperately trying to revive its mother. Selling ANY rhino horns or elephant tusks no matter how old they are perpetuates the market and drives poachers to kill more to make more money. You shouldn't care about some old sculpture carved from a rhinos horn, you should care about your great grandchildren walking the same earth as rhinos still do and being in awe of what a magnificent and priceless creature they are.
@@mr.meeseeks5127 I get what you're driving at but the main point of history is to learn from it. Think of all the things that people marvel at that came about through death. The pyramids, great wall of China, Mayan monuments and pyramids etc.,etc. All built by slaves that where worked to death. Should those things all be destroyed as well?. A smart person learns and recognizes wrongs done but a stupid person will continue to do the same things over and over.
I love , love, love The Antique Road Show. I love to watch it & see the Antique Items that People bring in . I love to see the unique Items & ones that are worth alot of money. I like to really listen to all the Peoples Stories behind & with the Antiques that they bring to the Antique Road Show. I like the People on The Antique Road Show The Appraisers & All. I love the Different States that They Go To Too.

The value of the Faberge flower had very little to do with military and everything to do with Faberge. Everything made by Carl Faberge is insanely valuable. He was the best jeweler who ever lived.

@@Deezhan Well. I am not sure how you can measure these things. Esthetics are always subjective.
What would be "better" anyway? Something made with materials that didn't exist in his time? Something made for modern customers? ( Many of his greatest works were made to order by Russian noblemen . . . people who live lives of luxury made possible by the fact they owned, and brutalised hundreds of thousands of "hereditary vassals" and they had no hesitation in burning people alive to teach their neighbours respect. It can not but taint something to know it was made for such a customer )
Would they be "better" objects if they measurably had no imperfections because of modern tools?.
He didn't do the actual work on many of "his" pieces, he just designed them and had his tradesmen make them, or make the majority of it.
So if someone designed something today, and put it through a CDC and 3D Printer . . ..
Anyway, I don't think there are too many people wishing to have these overly elaborate jewels made by a modern artist, so it is oranges and apples.
Great examples. My favorite was the baseball card collection with the personal note. Awesome!

40 years ago, we found a family photo album in Globe, AZ that dated from the mid to late 1800's. We tried for years to locate the family, finally gave up and donated it. It's in the photography collection of the National Museum of Black American history and Culture, D.C. I also had a postcard written by H.P. Lovecraft to Robert E. Howard. Donated that to the Howard museum in Cross Plains, TX. That's where stuff like that belongs.

There is a set of the 1914 Goudee uncirculated set of baseball cards an old man had and right before he passed away his wife sold the set back in 2012 I think. The 32 card set was all uncirculated cards that had never been touched by hands. The set sold for $880,000 dollars. The cards were soo intricate that each card was graded a 10 condition for the sensitive set.

My mum used to make me collect McDonald’s toys wouldn’t even let me take them out the little plastic bag. Said they will be worth lots in the future. 30 years later they are on eBay for about 30p
Yeah. Comic books I read in the 60s that cost 25-cents now sell for $35.00. 'mint condition,' 'original packaging.' Autographed items are discounted because they're not 'mint.'

I sometimes think about all the amazing items like these... that ended up in landfills for multitudes of reasons, the main one being that the average person has no clue what they're worth. Horrrrrible.
It breaks my heart to see kids or Grandkids fly in from out of state to clean out Grandma's house. I've seen dumpsters get filled with no regard whatsoever for the belongs. They get in, clean up, and put the house up for sale. Today's generation doesn't seem to care for "keepsakes" like previous generations. Maybe it has to do with the depression or rationing during world war II. Our kids don't want any of our stuff even though quite a bit has some real value. side note: Our treasures are insured for a cool mil.
I think younger generations treasure their grandparents immensely, but not their “stuff.” Most times what people leave behind is just a burden of posessions.
Best thing I found in grandparents house? A Civil War photo album from one of my ancestors who served in the Civil War. Pictures of him in uniform ( Union) and the gem of the photos was an autographed photo of Abraham Lincoln.

Nic B......I finally gave up... gave two 30 gallon trash bags full to my grand-girls and let them have havoc on the whole bunch! That was probably the highest and best use they will ever have. Included those dang Mc Donald’s give always that I waited hours for at the drive throughs and ate way too many kids meals resulting in a worthless collection and about 20 pounds I sure didn’t need! Was fun though and let me have a project with my teen age boys.
Never shut up I never collected them but my daughter’s grandma did. She’s still adamant that they’ll be worth something.
My grandfather collects collectors items... I told him if it's advertised as a collector's item, you're overpaying and you'll be dead before it's worth anything. He disagrees, yet he hasn't proven me wrong. Maybe at his funeral I'll bring it up 🤣

Well, 1979 anyway.
The US copy-show didn't start until 1997.
The longest running US TV primetime series is the Simpsons, 716 episodes. UK Antiques Roadshow has made 856 episodes for the BBC.
The UK show frequently has objects 800 to a 1000 years old. And the British evaluators are not "showmen" they are professionals, calm, cautious, and ACTUAL experts, not some guy who has a shop in Vegas.
Actually the American version does have real experts all the time! I have watched the UK version and it’s fabulous just because there are objects that are incredibly old!

Swapnil Gaur I’ve been to Ricks pawn shop in Vegas. It’s a joke, don’t waste your time. Half the building is used for selling their cheap t shirts and mugs. We stayed about 15 minutes. Biggest waste of cab fair in my life.

@@testodude Yeah and they give you better appraisals. They have no skin in the game and they enjoy it for the stories as much as anything. Plus they get to see stuff they have never seen before or have only seen in books.

Im never buying rhino or stuff off exotic animals or animals in general..but I did buy a table and later discovered that it had elephant horn on it. Its second hand and I thought it was marble or something.
Let me find something like that and they tell me those types of price. I be like, "you want to buy?"

That last appraiser for the pocket watch was literally Rick’s appraiser. “Yeah. This watch is worth up to 250k retail.” Meanwhile, it’s actually worth 1.5 million dollars.

I don't watch "Rick." I think people should be aware that you pay an appraiser and the appraiser cannot then buy your object. It's up to you to know what you are selling. "Rick" has no obligation to tell you how much he thinks your item is worth. So do your own research before you hand over your "antique" for peanuts!
One, at the time no one knew it was a 1 of a kind. Two, it was sold 12 years after that appraisal. Markets for antiques can change dramatically in that time.
The appraiser honestly did not KNOW it's true value when it came on the Road Show. Later it was found to be the ONLY ONE in existence.....Makes a big diff you know.
I better hold onto this Timex I have.

The end problem is this.....You now have an item worth about $1,000,000. Just try and take out an insurance policy on it and ante up HUGE money each year. Most of the top items are sold shortly after because of this fact.
The Pawn Stars would offer $500 for all of this stuff!!

Watched this show once and a young girl had 12 African masks she had brought in to have checked. The appraiser indicated the value was one million. She naturally was all excited and said one mill for all these masks? The appraiser said no, one mill per mask....12 mill total. At the end of the show she was in front of her masks and said they were for sale and she would give a great price!
