  • Mel Johnson tells us the tale of how he hunted down his legendary whitetail. Bowhunting is full of numerous stories about giant whitetails, but no other typical white-tailed deer harvested by an archer has ever eclipsed this monster taken by Mel Johnson in 1965 from Illinois. Mel shot this magnificent buck using a re-curve bow from a ground blind.
    With a typical score of 204 4/8, this buck is the only North American big game animal to ever receive both the Ishi and Sagamore Hill awards, the highest recognition that the Pope & Young and Boone & Crockett clubs bestow on big game hunters.

    its amazing with all the technology we have today with compound bows and electronics and people having names for every buck on there farms and seasons of shed antlers that this buck is still king! and with traditional equipment makes it even more amazing...just a freak of a whitetail roaming around all those years ago..

      Yea "no food plots" he shot him in a soybean field 🤣. Why do you think he dressed out at 270 and was a world record? Deer was a hog

    Deducting points because of abnormals and things is absolutely stupid. Nets are for fishing. Waiting for a drying period is stupid. Just list the score gross as it is when you first kill it. That's the true and authentic means of measurement.

    • @EthanPDobbins
      @EthanPDobbins Před 4 lety +6

      I agree. but the reason for the drying period is to keep it fair for everyone. Since there is a difference between the green and dry score it may not exactly be fair for a Hunter who maybe killed a deer years ago and didn't realize what they had, or if they didn't get it in for measuring till a few months later they are at a disadvantage
