Jim Massett - Living Legends of Deer Hunting (Part 1)

  • Jim Massett has been hunting the vast Adirondacks in New York since the 1950's, and has taken over 100 mature bucks in his lifetime, most of them by tracking. He carried out many of his bucks by draping them over his shoulders and hauling them on his sturdy 130 pound frame rather than dragging. But the thing that struck me the most, even overshadowing his hunting accolades is the greatness of his character. Jim is a humble man of congeniality, ever willing to downplay his legend to raise up his peers. He's still in better shape than most men 15 years younger and full of life at 86 years old -- and sharper, too!
After our recorded conversation about deer hunting and over a glass of wine at his dinner table, we talked about all aspects of life! We laughed a whole lot. It was a pleasure to get to know him and share that time with him, and I'm hoping many people will get to have a little bit of that experience with Jim at Huntstock this year. Jim's ears perk up and thirst to hear other people's stories which can be hard to find these days.
See Jim at Huntstock this year, August 11-13th at Wildwood Farm in Westminster, MA. Tickets on sale here: huntstockevents.com/

I've been blessed to have my Grandfather Ray, aka "Pa", my Dad Tom Sr. and Uncle "Butch" Jim Massett as role models and teachers in life and hunting the "Big Woods" of the 'Rondacks'. All truly men anyone would be proud to be associated with! Great interview!!

Mr. Massett truly is a living legend. We were next door neighbors years ago, in Chittenango. Mr. and Mrs. Massett were the kindest people you'd ever meet. As a deer hunter, everyone in our family thinks of my husband as a legendary deer hunter, but he will say that he can't hold a candle to Mr. Massett! That trophy room says it all! God bless!

Thank goodness for the Jet Sled. It's kept me hunting into my '70's. Makes life much easier. I never carried a deer out of the woods. In earlier years we just dragged them out.

Jim, also affectionately known as "Uncle Butch" Got back to camp one evening around 7:30. I asked him where he went that day, so he got out his Topo map and said , well i started here , went here, found some good sign here, crossed a river here, and I was here at dark, 3 miles from his truck !!! so using the map legend mile length. I figured he must have covered 14 miles or so... he was 55ish at the time...Incredibly tough man, And honorable man....

You wont find any log roads out here on the Barrens, swamps and ridges and knee high bushes in between.

@@bs431980 I killed biggest deer in wake county N.C. By youth in 1993 when I was 13 & 44 now but it scored at N.C DIXIE DEER CLASSIC and I got the plague to prove it and I’ve killed a lot of pope & young’s over the years within a mile of my house on my farm & I don’t have to entertain your stupid talking about a deer shrunk 40 inches since the 70s theres only 2 stages and it’s alive and after the drying out period and it’s only ever been recorded to be couple inches at best ! U need to hunt more and stop internet thuggin … I don’t got to prove shit to u but I know bullshit when I see it and that deer never came close to 138 😂

They don’t have to, they’re way faster, have a sense of smell better than the best bloodhound on earth meaning they can smell you from miles away, they’re sense of hearing and eyesight is better than ours and they’ve evolved/ thrived throughout human history being hunted the entire time. This is a old vegetarian comment lol
