Something else I have seen in other field antler judging discussions is body size. By that I mean a large bodied buck can actually make a decent set of antlers look not as impressive, and a small bodied buck can make mediocre antlers look much bigger. Body size can be difficult to assess, especially if a buck comes in by itself and there are no other deer with it to compare it to. I have had several bucks thru the years ground shrink after putting them on the ground due to misjudging body size and throwing my antler assessment off. On a side note, never apologize for the size of deer you have harvested. Every hunting and harvesting experience is unique and exciting and never let shrinkage, etc. take away from that life event. I've got a 145 inch 3 beamed buck, a mid 150s 10 point, a mid to high 150 inch 10 point with one huge brow, and a mid 150 inch 9 point all I estimate to be over 4 1/2 years old. Other than that I have about four 120-145 inch deer that need one more year

Enjoyed your video on scoring and aging deer. I killed a giant 12 point thought, until I watched your video and got Boone and Crockett score sheet on line. It scored 135 . my oldest son and I have a big 10 pointer a few 8s and then there's the yearlings and 2 year olds that take up most of our trail camera activity anything from spikes to a nice six that has amazing character and potential we are excited for the deer hunting to come this year

You guys spoke quite a bit on brow tines. From a Wildlife Biologist perspective, what is your thoughts on deer without brow times at all. Unlike spikes that can develop later, I've read that if they don't have brows, that their genetics are preventing them from growth. So that said, would you try to prevent him spreading those genes? Would you cull a no brow point buck?
We never recommend "culling" bucks. Culling has been shown to have no effect on free ranging deer. For culling to work, there must be a pedigree, which cannot exist in wild deer. This is one reason we choose to harvest bucks based on age. Age and nutrition are the two things that mangers can influence. GrowingDeer.tv I've been following you guys for years and I understand thay...however, no brow tines appears to be a genetic abnormality...not a lack of age/nutrition. So therein lies my question. He will never develop brow tines...therefore never develop a traditional looking rack, and will spread his genes further. I have traditionally let my kids shoot them. Are you telling me that it would not matter at all that it's genetic and not nutrition like a spike would be?
It is genetic but culling deer will not change the herds genetic's. When you see a buck, you only see the phenotype (the antler characteristics). What we often forget about is the genotype (the genetic characteristics we can't see). Even though a buck may show a specific phenotype, it could also have many genotypes that are simply not seen. These genotypes will never be expressed as phenotypes in future generations if a deer is culled based on phenotype. -Daniel
GrowingDeer.tv , Now I understand your point. I still think it's potentially debatable as to whether or not to let them spread their genes through further breeding, but at least I understand where you're coming from. Still though, you're making a point for genetic diversity...and considering the bucks are only half of the genetic input, there's potential that the offspring would not have this malformation. On my hunting properties (2-10 acre spots) we have tons of does and only a handful of bucks. When my kids first start hunting, they are free to shoot whatever deer they want. Once they start, they work their way up...as I have. So, these couple of bucks with no brow tines, it was an opportunity to allow them to step up to a bigger buck without going to the truly nice ones yet. I felt like I didn't want to spoil them on larger bucks and to be happy and pleased with what God provides. Although the lesson has always been that in herd management, that we need to let them grow older and more mature...while concentrating on thinning does. Now with your perspective in mind, I'll be less likely to take out a buck without brow tines. We stopped taking spikes long ago after reading conflicting studies going back a long time. It was Dr. Woods study of the buck in New York that went from spike the first year to a respectable B&C buck in his prime years. I do wonder what a six year old buck with no brow tines would look like. Could be interesting! The last one we took was a 3x3 but really wide for a 2.5 year old.

we saw him...the monster buck I mentioned that we never really knew how many points we went and sat night m our blind for a while it's not deer season but we were doing some scouting and he popped into a food plot at 150 yards I got the binos on him he has 12 points with monster brows and drop times off his main beams so that wld v at least 14 scorable that is huge for vt we are so excited hoping to harvest him this fall wow

hey Grant sad day on our property I'm currently waiting for the game warden at my house we went to do another scout on our cedar bedding area and found a dead deer nice little four points probably one and a half year old bullet holes entry and exit we suspect a poacher will check inferiates me wld have been a nice buck in a couple years or even a nice youth buck for one of the nephews or nieces just beside myself right now hope you have a blessed sunday

It would have helped to know HOW he made the determination about tine length, spread. That would help those of us who don't get to look at trophies like these very often and can't judge based on having seen so many.
Eric - There are some general rules of thumb that many folks use such as
the circumference of a deer's eye is often about 4" and the length of
white of a deer's ear is usually around 7". These indicators of size
and vary some region to region. They do serve as good guides. Brow
tines are usually fairly short and if they can be accurately estimated
than the length of the other tines are easier to estimate based on
comparing to the brow tines.

Off topic a little, how do you and your interns keep the ticks off during your days as you roam around. Looks like all your pants legs run straight to the ground, whats your secret. Heard Missouri had plenty of bad one's. Have 3 racks on 1 camera survey and a big hog.
We have MANY ticks!!! We have found that Permethrin works great for treating clothing. It lasts up to two weeks and several washings. We don't go out in the summer unless we have treated our clothes with it! -Daniel
How many bucks in one season per person?
there is a very massive deer on the property I have jumped him 2 times in 2 or 3 years never got him on a trail cam his rack is massive we guess he has to be a 12 or bigger and I wld say he's at least 6 years old there are several stories from everyone that hunts the area about how the only time you see g he's already seen you and is headed out just a very old and wise monster buck we wld love be to harvest him if we do I will send video or pics for sure

How many bucks can you guys kill on your property ? Also how many doe tags do you get ?
Each hunter is allowed 2 bucks a year (only one with a firearm). Archers can shoot unlimited does and we get 2 anterless tags for firearm season. -Daniel
GrowingDeer.tv how is that cause here in pa we can get one buck tag and buy unlimited doe tags but it seems that you guys don't even need licenses.

We do our best to provide deer with the best quality habitat in our area. If you can find and focus on one thing that your property has that your neighbors do not, you can draw and hold local deer on your property much easier. -Daniel

ya work hard to make a decent habitat for your deer and get neighbors and friends with the same management goals and still someone feels the need to take a velvet buck a young one and just leaves it to die I'm hoping the game wardens and other authorities can do an investigation and bring the criminal to justice
I want to take this time to give thanks to the vt game warden and state police they came and looked at the deer that was poached and are conducting an ongoing imveatigation and one of the wardens will be watching surrounding roads to watch for suspicious activity thank you
