    Watched a giant 8 pointer, probably 24 inches wide, all summer a few years back. He disappeared in September before his velvet came off. No pics of him the entire hunting season. I assumed he was dead. I checked trail cams in February after the seasons all ended, and there he was, out of velvet, with both brow tines missing. They can be like ghosts.

    It’s great having this awesome deer hunting education readily available for any hunter to learn from. I’m still learning a lot after 6 years hunting.

    Thank you Dr Woods! I always look forward to your insights on whitetail, how they behave and how to hunt them better using that knowledge.

    Great informative video. I learned years ago by going out after season looking for rubs and scrapes where they went. I also went out during spring greenup and found the oak trees and apple trees and seen all the traffic sign. Noted ok heres where they went at one point. That helped me tremendously in both understanding how their needs change and how they adapt to what makes them comfortable. Thicker cover and higher stem count woody browse once they shed their velvet where they can't be there during the summers or it will hurt them when they hit the velvet. Most people think about the daylight lessening only affecting does and their estrous cycle. It absolutely affects bucks also. Great timing for this video! Goodluck to you Mr Woods!

    Running trail cameras year round for multiple years on the same property has shown me that when the velvet comes off there are more bucks that shift into my property. Late Aug into September is when I see the shift. Located in central IL.

    I will also interject here as well. During the pre rut if you get lots of temporary scrapes made it’s cool to have. But if you get lots of temporary scrapes made in the same general area year after year that’s a good sign. From my experience it means doe bedding is near by and bucks are starting to visit the area more often. Wait for a cold front to happen and you’ll see a spike in activity. I would also place a couple of trail cameras to locate where they are coming from.

    Great video man. Just one thing I disagree with. If buck weren’t territorial then why do they come in to the grunts and rattles? Or get aggressive when they smell another bucks urine

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Před 11 měsíci

      They come to grunts because a grunt signals a receptive doe. They come to dance and not fight. Urine - they certainly don't become aggressive every time they smell buck urine but do sometimes do if there's any sign of a receptive doe nearby.

    Hello, question for you. I am on 20 acres in SC. All pines and (a little) natural browse. I have a few young bucks, some does and a 3 1/2 eight-pointer that I see regularly but that's about it. I've cut in 2 half acre food plots, in the process of getting this terrible, acidic soil up to par, have put up a few mock scrapes. My question is, how do deer find good food sources. In other words, how will other deer in the surrounding area eventually find their way to my farm? There's no ag in the area, everyone else just throws out deer corn so my plots are the only thing going in the area. Lol is it deer word of mouth, each one comes in with a plus one??? Any help u have is appreciated!!!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Deer tend to find anything in their home range. However, deer rarely leave their home range and such deer will not find your plots.

    From my experience, bucks go nocturnal after a few days of hunting pressure. As little as the day after the season opens.

    I’m confused.. if bucks don’t become “territorial” then why do smaller bucks seem to come around less often or disappear altogether when a mature buck comes into the picture during the rut?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Před 10 měsíci

      I often see young bucks with mature bucks. Bucks certainly fight over receptive does but don't defend territories.

    I think Whitney Houston sang a song about this.
    Where do all the bucks go?
    Can they find their way home?
    Back to the open field of a gun that's waiting there?

    All my good bucks disappeared when a local 19 year old decided to go around with a spot light last year and violated, he been bragging how he shot over 100 deer last year, supposedly the dnr has been on to him but cant catch him in the act or want enough evidence to build a big solid case unfortunately i lost 2 solid 5 year olds that he decided to just leave in the middle of the field
