the bolts do not come out of the coil packs. So using a plastic pry bar and a piece of wood works better than messing with string. hook the pry bar under the head of the bolt once it is loose and use a piece of wood as a fulcrum. lever them right out and never pull on the pack.
Can you please elaborate on this? I am going to be doing this on my '18 GTS and want to make sure I have the right tools before I start working on the car.
@@trancequilitea the single bolt holding the coil pack on will only slide out so far. i took a plastic pry bar (used for a lot of interior trim removal) and a piece of wood. hook the head of the pry bar to the head of the bolt. use the piece of wood as a fulcrum. pry it right off the plug. quick, easy and you don't have to worry about messing up your coil pack.
@@trancequilitea Harbor Freight has the plastic pry bars. i think they come like 5 different ones in a pack. cheap.
How do you do that to the coil pack at the coolant tank?

I love when the girls take an interest. Just to have them know that there's nothing mystical about wrenching so they can shame their future husbands 🤣🤣. Gap checking tends to pay off every handful of plugs so I just make a habit of it now.

Our Macan S is almost 4 years old and the motor is just as clean as yours. It only has 21k miles on it and I am looking forward to doing the plugs.
If you disconnect the sensor wire from the coolant reservoir you can swing it completely out of the way, should make the job a bit easier.
Only 23k on our Macan , upgrading the air filters to BMC so going to do the plugs as well. Doing the 4 year maintenance. Oil,filters, plugs and cabin filters.
Great video. Just finished changing spark plugs on my Macan S. Found it easier removing coils by pulling on screws attached to coils with long nose pliers.

Did the plugs today , very easy after watching your video. Number 5 plug would not budge. Sprayed some lube in plug and will try again tomorrow.

@@trancequilitea No #5 is in there and I don't want to break it. Still under warrantee so will take it in. My friend is a European car mechanic and he says to use trans fluid, just a few drops. So weird because all the others came out no problem.
@@ed389 #5 would not loosen at all? I just tried doing it on #1 and it "loosened," but won't come out. It grabs it and will spin and I'm concerned I stripped it. This occurred on #2 as well... I made sure I was not accidentally tightening it but I am now waiting for some Kroil to arrive before I proceed with trying to remove it. I have yet to try to tighten it and loosen it to see if I can get it out.

Always one hard plug to reach, usually drivers side closest to driver because of brake systems. Same on my 2012 FJ. Always a good idea to use anti-seize compound on plug threads, makes torquing more accurate and next removal easier.
Porsche has moved to favoring no anti-seize. Until I have a monster wrestling match with one, I'm going to heed.
@@DWraysGarage yep, if you are pulling plugs every 30k, why use thread compound. Was really interesting to see GM's problems with saying Caddies can go 100K without plug changes, Say waaaa. From an engineering standpoint, thread lube is recognised as the only way to accurately torque a bolt into a thread. Any ways, wides Macan S is ready for its PDK and spark plug service and after watching your great videos, its going in to the shop!!!

Changed out the plugs and coil packs on afriends 911, 996 a few months ago and what a PITA that was compared to my Caymen. Love my Milwaukie tools also, I'm a big fan of them and starting to collect quite a few of them lol. Mick - thanks for watching and sharing your 2 cents. I've never done a 911 but if it's worse than the Boxster/Cayman..! I really like the digital torque adaptor for lower torque specs since it's one less ratchet to deal with. I love when my girls help out - it's flattering they're willing to do that to spend time together because I know they'd rather be in their iPads otherwise! Stay well good sir!
@@DWraysGarage 911 is a nightmare to do as your right up against the rear exhaust boxes so don't have a lot of room to move compared to the caymen/boxter. Just came across the Redpants site as it appeared on my video feed after watching your Aston Martin oil change video. What a switched on guy and a great channel for anyone that owns an Aston. Can I ask why you got rid of yours?
Rich is very much balls deep on all things Vantage and doubles up his tutorials with product sales so a real one stop shop affair. For me, I had to choose between two seaters and the Porsche won that battle for me. I loved looking at the AM but wasn't as fun to drive for me personally.

Regarding the torque specs: new spark plugs should be torqued to 25 nm and re-used ones to 30 nm. The Bosch spark plug box states 28 nm...

Ecs tuning makes a coil pack puller tool for my Vw golf. Might help here too. Screws into the hole for the bolt that holds it done and provides grip.

Hi, the cost from the dealership for spark plugs at 58k miles is 1100 plus tax which made me consider doing this on my own. I have a 2018 Macan sports edition. I am going to check to see how similar my car is to your video in hopes of doing this myself to save some much needed $$.

0.028” gap is causing my Macan to throw all sorts of engine fault codes! My vehicle is now hesitating and going into limp mode.
Porsche dealership is saying it should be 8mm which is 0.032”. I’ll have to try tonight!

Just go easy around the coolant expansion tank. I was a little heavy handed and slightly dislodged one of the connecting hoses.

I'm surprised you didn't measure gap of the used plugs. Some prev maint such as oil sample testing is an expensive nuisance, so following the schedule is a safe choice. But inspecting a cpl plugs for contamination and gap-wear to judge whether replacement is warranted is an easy way to maintain performance while stretching the $.
The coil pack come out much easier when the engine is still warm. seems like the heat from the engine is loosing up the coil pack rubber. Sorry for the bad grammar lol

Great vid very clear. Noticed you have K&N air filters. How do you find them? More power ? Any changes in fuel consumption?
Marcus. Thanks for the watch and comment. The car came to me with KN so hard to say what different. I recently installed Flat 6 units and they turned up turbo noise a little. I've not noticed any meaningful change in fuel economy from after market to after market filters. I doubt it will have any compelling difference either way.
am i the only person who has had problems with this? I've changed out probably 1000 spark plugs in my life and was meticulous with this last night. now my engine turns over but won't fire up. Battery voltage is sitting at 11.7v... could this be the issue? Does it need 12 volts to start up? it cranks over fine but no spark to start the engine. I've cleaned every electrical terminal with electric contact spray and still nothing.

Hi, great video. My GTS is nearly 6 years old and as the mileage is so low (11,500) the plugs are original. But the Main Dealer recommends them being changed on the next service, but their cost is ridiculous. Please can you let me know how long it takes to do this. Thanks again, Rob
I'd estimate 1-2 hours depending on your abilities. I think I was right at two hours with lighting, filming and working with a 9y/o. Just make sure you have the spark plug socket and plenty of extension/wobble/universal joint pieces.

So I got tired of all this. Just traded in the Macan for a Tesla! Loving it! Saves me a lot of time. Absolutely no maintenance. Even the brakes don’t wear out for like 10 years.

When you own a vehicle that's pre-owned with little solid service history, the price of peace of mind by way of plugs is good by me. An ounce of prevention being better/cheaper than a pound of cure and all. I just sleep better knowing my ride is 'sorted'. Thanks for watching.

Lol! These services are mostly routine maintenance - arguably with a slight advance in schedule to I know it's all sorted out.
what are the plug part#'s u used??? u gotta gotta gotta gotta use anti seize on plugs it just makes it easier for you next time, also silicone the air filter ring and it will slide right on

Why is that a must?- His plugs didn't seem very tight.
Plug manufacturers warn against using antiseize on plated plugs. "Shouldn't" be necessary they say. And of course it alters the actual torque to be higher than specified/desired. And they don't want it inside the combustion chamber. I do use it on engines where plugs are tight, adjusting torque accordingly.
@@WeTubule plated plugs no issue, use copper a/s, use or don't use it's your boo boo when that "one" decides to graft itself for good, then its too late.....
Kinda like how Porsche want us to change out the rotors on the brake service at 25K?? Yeah, not going to happen. I can change the brake pads and sensors but the rotors?? Forget it.
