- In this video I test my makeshift windlass installation at Cat Harbor, Catalina Island to see how it goes. The windlass is a Lofrans Royal Manual Windlass. I'll elaborate more on this installation in an upcoming video. Then I solo sail home from Cat Harbor to Long Beach. I must admit, this is not the most adventurous video LOL! More to come... Stay tuned!
Beautiful sail back. Felt like I was there. Thanks again for sharing!
You bet Ben! Thanks for watching. I can always count on a few to watch and you’re one of them. Thanks!
I agree. Doesn't get much better than a beautiful day on the open water! Great job on the channel!
Thank you. Much appreciated. I looked to see if you guys have a channel, do you?
Always good to see ya!
Same to you Walt. Great to see you!
Great video man! You're living the life and I'm glad you share it. I liked hearing about the cost and upgrades to the boat and what it took to get you out there. I'd like to hear about your smaller projects and experiences as a new sailor. Things us newbies need to be aware of. I like your approach and the way you seem to stay is chill about stuff. Meanwhile, I'm pulling my hair out when things go wrong. I'm still learning to let the boat help me decompress. Thanks for the videos! I look forward to them.
Thanks! If you haven’t already, watch my oldest videos. They cover some of the stuff you’re asking about and I still have a lot of older boat work footage that I plan to edit. Full mast and rigging tear down etc.
As for staying chill when things go wrong; I had to learn that too. You need a calm level head in all situations as a captain. Get out there! 🤙🏼
Thank you for the video, it's always great to be out sailing. I used to have a slip at the end of gangway S. I really liked it there.
I love it at Shoreline.
Great vibe! 🤙🏼
Your older brother doesn't give you much of a break
Haha! If you’re referring to Mark, he’s just a good friend but I call him brother! 😜
Thank you so much for all your videos
Waiting for the next one
Right on! Thanks for watching Sergey! I put out videos just about every two weeks. 🤙🏼
I have often wondered why the call a windless a windless, instead of an anchor winch. For speed you need an electric windless until something fails. Have you thought about going all chain instead of rode? Anyway Andy, I think it would be an adventure to circumnavigate the entire island, just a thought. Nice sail, thanks for sharing.
Clearly an electric windlass is faster but they are far more expensive, then the wiring is expensive (thick gauge) and so on but the main reason I haven’t put in an electric windlass is the footprint for one that will accept 5/16 chain doesn’t work well with a Catalina 30. I’m sure there is one out there but the C30 foredeck and anchor locker isn’t really setup for an electric windlass. My solution is quick, dirty and fairly low cost in comparison. Anyway… thanks for watching and always chiming in. I’ll circumnavigate eventually. Stay tuned! Cheers!
Mark doing circles 😂
That’s what he does best! 😂
Nice work
Thank Michael. I’m replacing that manual windlass for an electric one. The manual one is too slow.
I miss sailing so much! ⛵ My son and I hangout at the pike often and look at sailboats in LB marina 🙂
I used to do that with my dad (RIP) in my twenties. We’d sit at Alamitos Bay marina dreaming of sailing gawking at sailboats. We had never sailed before but we wanted to sail around the world together. Now he’s gone and it will never happen. Don’t let life pass you by my friend! Thanks for watching, cheers!
@@sailingsole I'm sorry you two never made that happen... At least you're doing something now! 2 boat auctions ago remember that Columbia 46 center cockpit aft cabin that no one even bid on... Now, I don't know how well they sail but I sure would have loved to have gotten and fixed up that boat! The tough part is having a place to put it Before you go to the auction. How do youget a place to put a boat before you even get it? 🤔
twitter bought a huge tanker lol? jokes aside was a good video mate
😂 Thanks man! I’m tryin…
Great vid!
Thanks Alan. Cheers! 🤙🏼
12:20 - maaaan im doin my best to save up to buy a boat. i'm definitely planning on going to the auction in March, but i don't think ill be anywhere near ready to buy something by then. but who knows, i did just receive a random letter from someone wanting to buy my house lol
Don’t sell your house for an auction boat! Hahaha! But hey, who am I to tell you what to do. lol. Hope to see you at the auction this year. Cheers!
@@sailingsoleoh don't worry, i would be selling it to move to the Philippines, the boat would just take a small part of the cash. also, i should be getting a few thousand from taxes, so that plus what i've saved up should be able to cover most if not all of the cost of the boat, so i would only be dipping into the money from the house for repairs to the boat and maybe some updated electronics if the boat needs it
Me talking shit while you are hauling that chain.. 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah bro! Thanks for the encouraging words!!!!!
@@sailingsole Good times!!
When you acquired this boat, where did you store during repairs?
I bought it in Dana Point, paid for about two weeks of temporary slip fees while we waited for our Dana Point Shipyard appointment for bottom paint and miscellaneous work to be done. We were there for a week or so before our appointment for Shoreline inspection was ready. So we paid about three weeks of ancillary storage before we got our slip. 🤙🏼
How much do you pay in slip fees at Long Beach and how many nights you can stay on your Cat.while in slip ?
Hi Gary, my particular fees are around $17 per foot per month. It goes up ~3% per year. I believe we are allowed to stay on our boats 12 nights per month. Call the shoreline Long Beach Marina office for updated info. Cheers! 🤙🏼
